摘要: The continuous nanohertz gravitational waves (GWs) from individual supermassive binary black holes (SMBBHs) can be encoded in the timing residuals of pulsar timing arrays (PTAs). For each pulsar, the residuals actually contain an Earth term and a pulsar term, but usually only the Earth term is considered as signal and the pulsar term is dropped, which leads to parameter-estimation biases (PEBs) for the SMBBHs, and currently there are no convenient evaluations of the PEBs. In this article, we formulate the PEBs for a SMBBH with an eccentric orbit. In our analyses, the unknown phases of pulsar terms are treated as random variables obeying the uniform distribution $U[0,2\pi)$, due to the fact that pulsar distances are generally poorly measured. Our analytical results are in accordance with the numerical work by Zhu et. al. (2016) at $1.5\sigma$ level, implying that our formulae are effective in estimating magnitudes of the PEBs. Additionally, we find that for two parameters -- Earth term phase $\varphi^E$ and orbital eccentricity $e$, their biases $\Delta \varphi^E$ and $\Delta e/e$ monotonically decrease as $e$ increases, which partly confirms a hypothesis in our previous work Chen & Zhang (2018). Furthermore, we also calculate the PEBs caused by the recently observed common-spectrum process (CSP), finding that if the strain amplitude of the continuous GW is significantly stronger ($3$ times larger, in our cases) than the stochastic GW background, the PEBs from pulsar terms are larger than those from the CSP. Our formulae of the PEBs can be conveniently applied in the future PTA data analyses.

摘要: The recently observed chirping signature in the light curves of Seyfert 1 galaxy SDSSJ1430$+$2303 could be explained by a late-inspiralling supermassive binary black hole (SMBBH) system in the galactic center, which will merge in the near future (or could have merged already). For the merging SMBBH scenario, SDSSJ1430$+$2303 can be a source of nonlinear gravitational wave (GW) burst with memory (BWM), which may provide a promising target for future pulsar timing array (PTA) observations. In this work, we investigate the prospects for detecting the BWM signal from SDSSJ1430$+$2303 by the International PTA (IPTA) and FAST-PTA in the next $5$ years. We firstly propose strategies on searching for this target signal, including the selection of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) and the distribution of observation time. Then we simulate PTA observations based on the proposed strategies and obtain the probability density functions of the network signal-to-noise ratio and parameter-estimation errors of the BWM signal, considering the uncertainties of parameters of the SMBBH and both white and red noises of the selected MSPs. Our result shows that although IPTA can marginally detect the BWM in $5$ years, FAST-PTA can detect it with significantly higher confidence. Moreover, the archived IPTA data is important in estimating the merger time of the SMBBH, when combined with the FAST-PTA data. This work can serve as a guidance for future PTA observations and multi-messenger studies on SDSSJ1430$+$2303 and similar systems.

摘要: Optical phenomena associated with extremely localized field should be understood with considerations of nonlocal and quantum effects, which pose a hurdle to conceptualize the physics with a picture of eigenmodes. Here we first propose a generalized Lorentz model to describe general nonlocal media under linear mean-field approximation and formulate source-free Maxwell's equations as a linear eigenvalue problem to define the quasinormal modes. Then we introduce an orthonormalization scheme for the modes and establish a canonical quasinormal mode framework for general nonlocal media. Explicit formalisms for metals described by quantum hydrodynamic model and polar dielectrics with nonlocal response are exemplified. The framework enables for the first time direct modal analysis of mode transition in the quantum tunneling regime and provides physical insights beyond usual far-field spectroscopic analysis. Applied to nonlocal polar dielectrics, the framework also unveils the important roles of longitudinal phonon polaritons in optical response.

摘要: We report a self-consistent quasinormal mode theory for nanometer scale electromagnetism where the possible nonlocal and quantum effects are treated through quantum surface responses. With Feibelman's frequency-dependent \textit{d} parameters to describe the quantum surface responses, we formulate the source-free Maxwell's equations into a generalized linear eigenvalue problem to define the quasinormal modes. We then construct an orthonormal relation for the modes and consequently unlock the powerful toolbox of modal analysis. The orthonormal relation is validated by the reconstruction of the full numerical results through modal contributions. Significant changes in the landscape of the modes are observed due to the incorporation of the quantum surface responses for a number of nanostructures. Our semi-analytical modal analysis enables transparent physical interpretation of the spontaneous emission enhancement of a dipolar emitter as well as the near-field and far-field responses of planewave excitations in the nanostructures.

摘要: We report that flat substrates such as glass coverslips with surface roughness well below 0.5 nm feature notable speckle patterns when observed with high-sensitivity interference microscopy. We uncover that these speckle patterns unambiguously originate from the subnanometer surface undulations, and develop an intuitive model to illustrate how subnanometer non-resonant dielectric features could generate pronounced interference contrast in the far field. We introduce the concept of optical fingerprint for the deterministic speckle pattern associated with a particular substrate surface area and intentionally enhance the speckle amplitudes for potential applications. We demonstrate such optical fingerprints can be leveraged for reproducible position identification and marker-free lateral displacement detection with an experimental precision of 0.22 nm. The reproducible position identification allows us to detect new nanoscopic features developed during laborious processes performed outside of the microscope. The demonstrated capability for ultrasensitive displacement detection may find applications in the semiconductor industry and super-resolution optical microscopy.

摘要: Quantum hydrodynamic model (QHDM) has become a versatile and efficient tool for studying plasmonics at the nanoscopic length scale. Yet its application to noble metals has not been sufficiently justified, in particular for situations where the metallic structures interface with dielectric material and electrons spill over the interfaces. In a recent work, we developed a refined QHDM, where the near-field effects and static polarization of metal ion lattice, and the electron affinity and static permittivity of the dielectric are incorporated. Here we perform a careful calibration of the model parameters for the refined QHDM. The model parameters are determined by benchmarking with (time-dependent) density functional theory calculations for special cases of simple metal. The predictive power of the refined QHDM with calibrated model parameters is faithfully demonstrated by the calculations of the optical responses from gold nanomatryoshkas of different sizes. The refined QHDM approach allows the quasinormal mode analysis for revealing the intrinsic optical properties of the nanoscopic metallic structures. We expect the well-calibrated refined QHDM would provide the nanoplasmonics community with a useful tool.

摘要: Fermi J1544-0649 is a transient GeV source first detected during its GeV flares in 2017. Multi-wavelength observations during the flaring time demonstrate variability and spectral energy distribution(SED) that are typical of a blazar. Other than the flare time, Fermi J1544-0649 is quiet in the GeV band and looks rather like a quiet galaxy (2MASX J15441967-0649156) for a decade. Together with the broad absorption lines feature we further explore the "misaligned blazar scenario". We analyzed the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) and East Asian VLBI Network (EAVN) data from 2018 to 2020 and discovered the four jet components from Fermi J1544-0649. We found a viewing angle around 3.7{\deg} to 7.4{\deg}. The lower limit of the viewing angle indicates a blazar with an extremely low duty cycle of the gamma-ray emission, the upper limit of it supports the "misaligned blazar scenario". Follow-up multi-wavelength observations after 2018 show Fermi J1544-0649 remains quiet in GeV, X-ray, and optical bands. Multi-messenger search of neutrinos is also performed, and an excess of 3.1 {\sigma} significance is found for this source.

摘要: Detecting continuous nanohertz gravitational waves (GWs) generated by individual close binaries of supermassive black holes (CB-SMBHs) is one of the primary objectives of pulsar timing arrays (PTAs). The detection sensitivity is slated to increase significantly as the number of well-timed millisecond pulsars will increase by more than an order of magnitude with the advent of next-generation radio telescopes. Currently, the Bayesian analysis pipeline using parallel tempering Markov chain Monte Carlo has been applied in multiple studies for CB-SMBH searches, but it may be challenged by the high dimensionality of the parameter space for future large-scale PTAs. One solution is to reduce the dimensionality by maximizing or marginalizing over uninformative parameters semi-analytically, but it is not clear whether this approach can be extended to more complex signal models without making overly simplified assumptions. Recently, the method of diffusive nested (DNest) sampling shown the capability of coping with high dimensionality and multimodality effectively in Bayesian analysis. In this paper, we apply DNest to search for continuous GWs in simulated pulsar timing residuals and find that it performs well in terms of accuracy, robustness, and efficiency for a PTA including $\mathcal{O}(10^2)$ pulsars. DNest also allows a simultaneous search of multiple sources elegantly, which demonstrates its scalability and general applicability. Our results show that it is convenient and also high beneficial to include DNest in current toolboxes of PTA analysis.

摘要: AR Scorpii (AR Sco), the only-known radio-pulsing white dwarf binary, shows unusual pulsating emission at the radio, infrared, optical and ultraviolet bands. To determine its astrometric parameters at the radio band independently, we conducted multi-epoch Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) phase-referencing observations with the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 5 GHz and the Chinese VLBI Network (CVN) plus the Warkworth 30-metre telescope (New Zealand) at 8.6 GHz. By using the differential VLBI astrometry, we provide high-precision astrometric measurements on the parallax ($\pi=8.52_{-0.07}^{+0.04}$ mas), and proper motion ($\mu_{\alpha}=9.48_{-0.07}^{+0.04}$ mas yr$^{-1}$, $\mu_{\delta}=-51.32_{-0.38}^{+0.22}$ mas yr$^{-1}$). The new VLBI results agree with the optical Gaia astrometry. Our kinematic analysis reveals that the Galactic space velocities of AR Sco are quite consistent with that of both intermediate polars (IPs) and polars. Combined with the previous tightest VLBI constraint on the size, our parallax distance suggests that the radio emission of AR Sco should be located within the light cylinder of its white dwarf.

摘要: Dwarf galaxies are characterised by a very low luminosity and low mass. Because of significant accretion and ejection activity of massive black holes, some dwarf galaxies also host low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs). In a few dwarf AGNs, very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations have found faint non-thermal radio emission. SDSS J090613.77+561015.2 is a dwarf AGN owning an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) with a mass of $M_{BH} = 3.6^{+5.9}_{-2.3} \times 10^5 M_{sun}$ and showing a rarely-seen two-component radio structure in its radio nucleus. To further probe their nature, i.e. the IMBH jet activity, we performed additional deep observations with the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 1.66 GHz and 4.99 GHz. We find the more diffuse emission regions and structure details. These new EVN imaging results allow us to reveal a two-sided jet morphology with a size up to about 150 mas (projected length $\sim$140 pc) and a radio luminosity of about $3\times10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The peak feature has an optically thin radio spectrum and thus more likely represents a relatively young ejecta instead of a jet base. The EVN study on SDSS J090613.77+561015.2 demonstrates the existence of episodic, relatively large-scale and powerful IMBH jet activity in dwarf AGNs. Moreover, we collected a small sample of VLBI-detected dwarf AGNs and investigated their connections with normal AGNs. We notice that these radio sources in the dwarf AGNs tend to have steep spectra and small linear sizes, and possibly represent ejecta from scaled-down episodic jet activity.

摘要: We present the first empirical constraints on the turbulent velocity field of the diffuse circumgalactic medium around four luminous QSOs at $z\!\approx\!0.5$--1.1. Spatially extended nebulae of $\approx\!50$--100 physical kpc in diameter centered on the QSOs are revealed in [OII]$\lambda\lambda\,3727,3729$ and/or [OIII]$\lambda\,5008$ emission lines in integral field spectroscopic observations obtained using MUSE on the VLT. We measure the second- and third-order velocity structure functions (VSFs) over a range of scales, from $\lesssim\!5$ kpc to $\approx\!20$--50 kpc, to quantify the turbulent energy transfer between different scales in these nebulae. While no constraints on the energy injection and dissipation scales can be obtained from the current data, we show that robust constraints on the power-law slope of the VSFs can be determined after accounting for the effects of atmospheric seeing, spatial smoothing, and large-scale bulk flows. Out of the four QSO nebulae studied, one exhibits VSFs in spectacular agreement with the Kolmogorov law, expected for isotropic, homogeneous, and incompressible turbulent flows. The other three fields exhibit a shallower decline in the VSFs from large to small scales. However, with a limited dynamic range in the spatial scales in seeing-limited data, no constraints can be obtained for the VSF slopes of these three nebulae. For the QSO nebula consistent with the Kolmogorov law, we determine a turbulence energy cascade rate of $\approx\!0.2$ cm$^{2}$ s$^{-3}$. We discuss the implication of the observed VSFs in the context of QSO feeding and feedback in the circumgalactic medium.

摘要: We report the discovery of giant (50-100 kpc) [O II] emitting nebulae with the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) in the field of TXS 0206-048, a luminous quasar at z=1.13. Down-the-barrel UV spectra of the quasar show absorption at velocities coincident with those of the extended nebulae, enabling new insights into inflows and outflows around the quasar host. One nebula exhibits a filamentary morphology extending over 120 kpc from the halo toward the quasar and intersecting with another nebula surrounding the quasar host with a radius of 50 kpc. This is the longest cool filament observed to-date and arises at higher redshift and in a less massive system than those in cool-core clusters. The filamentary nebula has line-of-sight velocities >300 km/s from nearby galaxies but matches that of the nebula surrounding the quasar host where they intersect, consistent with accretion of cool inter- or circum-galactic medium or cooling hot halo gas. The kinematics of the nebulae surrounding the quasar host are unusual and complex, with redshifted and blueshifted spiral-like structures. The emission velocities at 5-10 kpc from the quasar match those of inflowing absorbing gas observed in UV spectra of the quasar. Together, the extended nebulae and associated redshifted absorption represent a compelling case of cool, filamentary gas accretion from halo scales into the extended interstellar medium and toward the nucleus of a massive quasar host. The inflow rate implied by the combined emission and absorption constraints is well below levels required to sustain the quasar's radiative luminosity, suggesting anisotropic or variable accretion.

摘要: This paper presents a systematic study of the photoionization and thermodynamic properties of the cool circumgalactic medium (CGM) as traced by rest-frame ultraviolet absorption lines around 26 galaxies at redshift $z\lesssim1$. The study utilizes both high-quality far-ultraviolet and optical spectra of background QSOs and deep galaxy redshift surveys to characterize the gas density, temperature, and pressure of individual absorbing components and to resolve their internal non-thermal motions. The derived gas density spans more than three decades, from $\log (n_{\rm H}/{\rm cm^{-3}}) \approx -4$ to $-1$, while the temperature of the gas is confined in a narrow range of $\log (T/{\rm K})\approx 4.3\pm 0.3$. In addition, a weak anti-correlation between gas density and temperature is observed, consistent with the expectation of the gas being in photoionization equilibrium. Furthermore, decomposing the observed line widths into thermal and non-thermal contributions reveals that more than 30% of the components at $z\lesssim 1$ exhibit line widths driven by non-thermal motions, in comparison to $<20$% found at $z\approx 2$-3. Attributing the observed non-thermal line widths to intra-clump turbulence, we find that massive quenched galaxies on average exhibit higher non-thermal broadening/turbulent energy in their CGM compared to star-forming galaxies at $z\lesssim 1$. Finally, strong absorption features from multiple ions covering a wide range of ionization energy (e.g., from Mg II to O IV) can be present simultaneously in a single absorption system with kinematically aligned component structure, but the inferred pressure in different phases may differ by a factor of $\approx 10$.

摘要: Extremely red quasars, with bolometric luminosities exceeding $10^{47}$ erg s$^{-1}$, are a fascinating high-redshift population that is absent in the local universe. They are the best candidates for supermassive black holes accreting at rates at or above the Eddington limit, and they are associated with the most rapid and powerful outflows of ionized gas known to date. They are also hosted by massive galaxies. Here we present the first integral field unit (IFU) observations of a high-redshift quasar obtained by the Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) on board the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), which targeted SDSSJ165202.64+172852.3, an extremely red quasar at $z=2.94$. JWST observations reveal extended ionized gas - as traced by [OIII]$\lambda$5007\AA - in the host galaxy of the quasar, its outflow, and the circumgalactic medium. The complex morphology and kinematics imply that the quasar resides in a very dense environment with several interacting companion galaxies within projected distances of 10-15 kpc. The high density of the environment and the large velocities of the companion galaxies suggest that this system may represent the core of a forming cluster of galaxies. The system is a good candidate for a merger of two or more dark matter halos, each with a mass of a few $10^{13}$ M$_\odot$ and traces potentially one of the densest knots at $z\sim3$.

摘要: In time-domain astronomy, a substantial number of transients will be discovered by multi-wavelength and multi-messenger observatories, posing a great challenge for follow-up capabilities. We have thus proposed an intelligent X-ray constellation, the Chasing All Transients Constellation Hunters (CATCH) space mission. Consisting of 126 micro-satellites in three types, CATCH will have the capability to perform follow-up observations for a large number of different types of transients simultaneously. Each satellite in the constellation will carry lightweight X-ray optics and use a deployable mast to increase the focal length. The combination of different optics and detector systems enables different types of satellites to have multiform observation capabilities, including timing, spectroscopy, imaging, and polarization. Controlled by the intelligent system, different satellites can cooperate to perform uninterrupted monitoring, all-sky follow-up observations, and scanning observations with a flexible field of view (FOV) and multi-dimensional observations. Therefore, CATCH will be a powerful mission to study the dynamic universe. Here, we present the current design of the spacecraft, optics, detector system, constellation configuration and observing modes, as well as the development plan.

摘要: The East Asian VLBI Network (EAVN) is an international VLBI facility in East Asia and is operated under mutual collaboration between East Asian countries, as well as part of Southeast Asian and European countries. EAVN currently consists of 16 radio telescopes and three correlators located in China, Japan, and Korea, and is operated mainly at three frequency bands, 6.7, 22, and 43 GHz with the longest baseline length of 5078 km, resulting in the highest angular resolution of 0.28 milliarcseconds at 43 GHz. One of distinct capabilities of EAVN is multi-frequency simultaneous data reception at nine telescopes, which enable us to employ the frequency phase transfer technique to obtain better sensitivity at higher observing frequencies. EAVN started its open-use program in the second half of 2018, providing a total observing time of more than 1100 hours in a year. EAVN fills geographical gap in global VLBI array, resulting in enabling us to conduct contiguous high-resolution VLBI observations. EAVN has produced various scientific accomplishments especially in observations toward active galactic nuclei, evolved stars, and star-forming regions. These activities motivate us to initiate launch of the 'Global VLBI Alliance' to provide an opportunity of VLBI observation with the longest baselines on the earth.

摘要: We propose to develop a wide-field and ultra-high-precision photometric survey mission, temporarily named "Earth 2.0 (ET)". This mission is designed to measure, for the first time, the occurrence rate and the orbital distributions of Earth-sized planets. ET consists of seven 30cm telescopes, to be launched to the Earth-Sun's L2 point. Six of these are transit telescopes with a field of view of 500 square degrees. Staring in the direction that encompasses the original Kepler field for four continuous years, this monitoring will return tens of thousands of transiting planets, including the elusive Earth twins orbiting solar-type stars. The seventh telescope is a 30cm microlensing telescope that will monitor an area of 4 square degrees toward the galactic bulge. This, combined with simultaneous ground-based KMTNet observations, will measure masses for hundreds of long-period and free-floating planets. Together, the transit and the microlensing telescopes will revolutionize our understandings of terrestrial planets across a large swath of orbital distances and free space. In addition, the survey data will also facilitate studies in the fields of asteroseismology, Galactic archeology, time-domain sciences, and black holes in binaries.
