  • JCMT BISTRO Observations: Magnetic Field Morphology of Bubbles Associated with NGC 6334

    摘要: We study the HII regions associated with the NGC 6334 molecular cloud observed in the sub-millimeter and taken as part of the B-fields In STar-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) Survey. In particular, we investigate the polarization patterns and magnetic field morphologies associated with these HII regions. Through polarization pattern and pressure calculation analyses, several of these bubbles indicate that the gas and magnetic field lines have been pushed away from the bubble, toward an almost tangential (to the bubble) magnetic field morphology. In the densest part of NGC 6334, where the magnetic field morphology is similar to an hourglass, the polarization observations do not exhibit observable impact from HII regions. We detect two nested radial polarization patterns in a bubble to the south of NGC 6334 that correspond to the previously observed bipolar structure in this bubble. Finally, using the results of this study, we present steps (incorporating computer vision; circular Hough Transform) that can be used in future studies to identify bubbles that have physically impacted magnetic field lines.

  • Dependence of Molecular Cloud Samples on Angular Resolution, Sensitivity, and Algorithms

    摘要: In this work, we investigate the observational and algorithmic effects on molecular cloud samples identified from position-position-velocity (PPV) space. By smoothing and cutting off the high quality data of the Milky Way Imaging Scroll Painting (MWISP) survey, we extract various molecular cloud samples from those altered data with the DBSCAN (density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise) algorithm. Those molecular cloud samples are subsequently used to gauge the significance of sensitivity, angular/velocity resolution, and DBSCAN parameters. Two additional surveys, the FCRAO Outer Galaxy Survey (OGS) and the CfA-Chile 1.2 m complete CO (CfA-Chile) survey, are used to verify the MWISP results. We found that molecular cloud catalogs are not unique and the boundary and therefore the number shows strong variation with angular resolution and sensitivity. At low angular resolution (large beam sizes), molecular clouds merge together in PPV space, while low sensitivity (high cutoffs) misses small faint molecular clouds and takes bright parts of large molecular clouds as single ones. At high angular resolution and sensitivity, giant molecular clouds (GMCs) are resolved into individual clouds, and their diffuse components are also revealed. Consequently, GMCs are more appropriately interpreted as clusters or aggregates of molecular clouds, i.e., GMCs represent molecular cloud samples themselves.

  • The Radial Profile of Dust Grain Size in the Protoplanetary Disk of DS Tau

    摘要: How do dust grains in protoplanetary disks overcome rapid radial drift and grow from micron size particles to planets is not well understood. The key is to search for evidence of dust accumulation and growth as a function of radius in the disk. We investigate the radial profile of grain size in the DS Tau disk by fitting multi-band ALMA observations with self-consistent radiative transfer models. The best-fit grain sizes range from centimeters in the inner disk down to 30 micron in the outer regions. Such an inside-out decreasing tendency is consistent with theories of dust evolution. Based on the best-fit model, we find that dust of 2 Jupiter masses has been depleted within the gap. By taking the gas-to-dust mass ratio into account, the lost mass is enough to form the 3.5 Jupiter mass planet inferred by literature hydrodynamic simulations. Moreover, our modeling also indicates that at the interface region between the gap and the ring, the grain size profile shows a discontinuity, with its amplitude dependent on the dust model adopted in the radiative transfer analysis. Future multi-wavelength observations at higher angular resolutions are required to better constrain the grain size and its variation in the vicinity of disk substructures.

  • Gas Column Density Distribution of Molecular Clouds in the Third Quadrant of the Milky Way

    摘要: We have obtained column density maps for an unbiased sample of 120 molecular clouds in the third quadrant of the Milky Way mid-plane (b$\le |5|^{\circ}$) within the galactic longitude range from 195$^{\circ}$ to 225$^{\circ}$, using the high sensitivity $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO ($J=1-0$) data from the Milky Way Imaging Scroll Painting (MWISP) project. The probability density functions of the molecular hydrogen column density of the clouds, N-PDFs, are fitted with both log-normal (LN) function and log-normal plus power-law (LN+PL) function. The molecular clouds are classified into three categories according to their shapes of N-PDFs, i.e., LN, LN+PL, and UN (unclear), respectively. About 72\% of the molecular clouds fall into the LN category, while 18\% and 10\% into the LN+PL and UN categories, respectively. A power-law scaling relation, $\sigma_s\propto N_{H_2}^{0.44}$, exists between the width of the N-PDF, $\sigma_s$, and the average column density, $N_{H_2}$, of the molecular clouds. However, $\sigma_s$ shows no correlation with the mass of the clouds. A correlation is found between the dispersion of normalized column density, $\sigma_{N/\rm }$, and the sonic Mach number, $\mathcal{M}$, of molecular clouds. Overall, as predicted by numerical simulations, the N-PDFs of the molecular clouds with active star formation activity tend to have N-PDFs with power-law high-density tails.

  • CO Emission Delineating the Interface between the Milky Way Nuclear Wind Cavity and the Gaseous Disk

    摘要: Based on the MWISP survey, we study high-z CO emission toward the tangent points, in which the distances of the molecular clouds (MCs) are well determined. In the region of l=12-26 deg and |b| 110 pc are identified, of which nearly 30 extreme high-z MCs (EHMCs at |z|> 260 pc) are concentrated in a narrow region of R_GC=2.6-3.1 kpc. The EHMC concentrations, together with other high-z MCs at R_GC=2.3-2.6 kpc, constitute molecular crater-wall structures surrounding the edges of the HI voids that are physically associated with the Fermi bubbles. Intriguingly, some large high-z MCs, which lie in the crater walls above and below the Galactic plane, show cometary structures with the head toward the plane, favouring the scenario that the entrained molecular gas moves with the multi-phase flows from the plane to the high-z regions. We suggest that the Milky Way nuclear wind has a significant impact on the Galactic gaseous disk. The powerful nuclear wind at ~3-6 Myr ago is likely responsible for the observational features, (1) the enhanced CO gas lying in the edges of the HI voids, (2) the deficiency of atomic and molecular gas within R_GC<3 kpc, (3) the possible connection between the EHMC concentrations and the 3-kpc arm, and (4) the elongated high-z MCs with the tail pointing away from the Galactic plane.

  • Chemical modeling of the complex organic molecules in the extended region around Sagittarius B2

    摘要: The chemical differentiation of seven COMs in the extended region around Sgr B2 has been observed: CH$_2$OHCHO, CH$_3$OCHO, t-HCOOH, C$_2$H$_5$OH, and CH$_3$NH$_2$ were detected both in the extended region and near the hot cores Sgr B2(N) and Sgr B2(M), while CH$_3$OCH$_3$ and C$_2$H$_5$CN were only detected near the hot cores. The density and temperature in the extended region are relatively low. Different desorption mechanisms have been proposed to explain the observed COMs in cold regions but fail to explain the deficiency of CH$_3$OCH$_3$ and C$_2$H$_5$CN. We explored under what physical conditions the chemical simulations can fit the observations and explain the different spatial distribution of these species. We used the Monte Carlo method to perform a detailed parameter space study. We investigated how different mechanisms affect the results. All gas-grain chemical models based on static physics cannot fit the observations. The results based on evolving physical conditions can fit six COMs when $T\sim30-60$ K, but the best-fit temperature is still higher than the observed dust temperature of 20 K. The best agreement at $T\sim27$ K is achieved by considering a short-duration $\sim 10^2$ yr X-ray burst with $\zeta_{\mathrm{CR}}=1.3\times10^{-13}$ s$^{-1}$ when the temperature is 20 K. The reactive desorption is the key mechanism for producing these COMs and inducing the low abundances of CH$_3$OCH$_3$ and C$_2$H$_5$CN. The evolution of the extended region around Sgr~B2 may have begun with a cold, $T\le10$ K phase followed by a warm-up phase. When its temperature reached $T\sim20$ K, an X-ray flare from Sgr A* with a short duration of no more than 100 years was acquired, affecting strongly the Sgr B2 chemistry. The observed COMs retain their observed abundances only several hundred years after such a flare, which could imply that such short-term X-ray flares occur relatively often.

  • Molecular gas distribution perpendicular to the Galactic plane

    摘要: We use the ~370 square degrees data from the MWISP CO survey to study the vertical distribution of the molecular clouds (MCs) toward the tangent points in the region of l=[16,52]deg and |b|100pc from the Galactic plane. However, only a few samples (i.e., 32 MCs) are located in the |z|>360pc region. Typically, the discrete MCs of the thick disk population have a median peak temperature of 2.1 K, a median velocity dispersion of 0.8km/s, and a median effective radius of 2.5pc. The median surface density of these MCs is 6.8 Msun/pc^2, indicating very faint CO emission for these high-z MCs. The cloud-cloud velocity dispersion is 4.9+-1.3 km/s and a linear variation with a slope of -0.4 km/s/kpc is obtained in the region of R_GC=2.2-6.4kpc. Assuming that these clouds are supported by their turbulent motions against the gravitational pull of the disk, a model of rho0(R) = 1.28exp(-R/3.2kpc) Msun/pc^3 can be used to describe the distribution of the total mass density in the Galactic midplane.

  • On the underestimation of dust mass in protoplanetary disks: Effects of disk structure and dust properties

    摘要: The total amount of dust grains in protoplanetary disks is one of the key properties that characterize the potential for planet formation. With (sub-)millimeter flux measurements, literature studies usually derive the dust mass using an analytic form under the assumption of optically thin emission, which may lead to substantial underestimation. In this work, we conduct a parameter study with the goal of investigating the effects of disk structure and dust properties on the underestimation through self-consistent radiative transfer models. Different dust models, scattering modes and approaches for dust settling are considered and compared. The influences of disk substructures, such as rings and crescents, on the mass derivation are investigated as well. The results indicate that the traditional analytic method can underestimate the mass by a factor of a few to hundreds, depending on the optical depth along the line of sight set mainly by the true dust mass, disk size and inclination. As an application, we perform a detailed radiative transfer modeling of the spectral energy distribution of DoAr 33, one of the observed DSHARP disks. When the DSHARP dust opacities are adopted, the most probable dust mass returned from the Bayesian analysis is roughly 7 times higher than the value given by the analytic calculation. Our study demonstrates that estimating disk dust masses from radiative transfer modeling is one solution for alleviating the problem of insufficient mass for planet formation raised in the ALMA era.

  • Symmetry properties and widths of the filamentary structures in the Orion A giant molecular cloud

    摘要: We identify 225 filaments from an H$_2$ column density map constructed using simultaneous $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O (J=1-0) observations carried out as a part of the MWISP project. We select 46 long filaments with lengths above 1.2 pc to analyze the filament column density profiles. We divide the selected filaments into 397 segments and calculate the column density profiles for each segment. The symmetries of the profiles are investigated. The proportion of intrinsically asymmetrical segments is 65.3$\%$, and that of intrinsically symmetrical ones is 21.4$\%$. The typical full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the intrinsically symmetrical filament segments is $\sim$ 0.67 pc with the Plummer-like fitting, and $\sim$ 0.50 pc with the Gaussian fitting, respectively. The median FWHM widths derived from the second-moment method for intrinsically symmetrical and asymmetrical profiles are $\sim$ 0.44 and 0.46 pc, respectively. Close association exists between the filamentary structures and the YSOs in the region.

  • Hierarchical Structure of YSO Clusters in the W40 and Serpens South Region: Group Extraction and Comparison with Fractal Clusters

    摘要: Young stellar clusters are believed to inherit the spatial distribution like hierarchical structures of their natal molecular cloud during their formation. However, the change of the structures between the cloud and the young clusters is not well constrained observationally. We select the W40 - Serpens South region (~ 7 $\times$ 9 pc$^{2}$) of the Aquila Rift as a testbed and investigate hierarchical properties of spatial distribution of young stellar objects (YSOs) in this region. We develop a minimum spanning tree (MST)-based method to group stars into several levels by successively cutting down edges longer than an algorithmically determined critical value. A total of 832 YSOs are divided into 5 levels with 23 groups. For describing the hierarchical properties in a controlled way, we construct a set of synthetic source distributions at various fractal dimensions, and apply the same method to explore their group characters. By comparing the $Q$ parameter and the surface density profiles of the observed and the synthetic data, we find that the YSO observation matches spatial patterns from multi-fractal dimensions. In the periphery region where the molecular clouds are more diffuse, the YSO structure is close to a fractal dimension of 2.0, while in the core regions the fractal dimensions are close to 1.6 and 1.4 for the W40 and the Serpens South regions, respectively. Therefore, the YSOs may inherit the fractal pattern of the dense part of the molecular clouds, but such pattern dissipates slowly in several Myr.

  • The JCMT BISTRO-2 Survey: Magnetic Fields of the Massive DR21 Filament

    摘要: We present 850 $\mu$m dust polarization observations of the massive DR21 filament from the B-fields In STar-forming Region Observations (BISTRO) survey, using the POL-2 polarimeter and the SCUBA-2 camera on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We detect ordered magnetic fields perpendicular to the parsec-scale ridge of the DR21 main filament. In the sub-filaments, the magnetic fields are mainly parallel to the filamentary structures and smoothly connect to the magnetic fields of the main filament. We compare the POL-2 and Planck dust polarization observations to study the magnetic field structures of the DR21 filament on 0.1--10 pc scales. The magnetic fields revealed in the Planck data are well aligned with those of the POL-2 data, indicating a smooth variation of magnetic fields from large to small scales. The plane-of-sky magnetic field strengths derived from angular dispersion functions of dust polarization are 0.6--1.0 mG in the DR21 filament and $\sim$ 0.1 mG in the surrounding ambient gas. The mass-to-flux ratios are found to be magnetically supercritical in the filament and slightly subcritical to nearly critical in the ambient gas. The alignment between column density structures and magnetic fields changes from random alignment in the low-density ambient gas probed by Planck to mostly perpendicular in the high-density main filament probed by JCMT. The magnetic field structures of the DR21 filament are in agreement with MHD simulations of a strongly magnetized medium, suggesting that magnetic fields play an important role in shaping the DR21 main filament and sub-filaments.

  • Detection of Na and K in the atmosphere of the hot Jupiter HAT-P-1b with P200/DBSP

    摘要: We present a new optical transmission spectrum of the hot Jupiter HAT-P-1b based on two transits observed with the Double Spectrograph (DBSP) on the Palomar 200-inch (P200) telescope. The DBSP transmission spectrum, covering a wavelength range from 3250 to 10007 \r{A}, is consistent with that observed with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), but the former has a finer spectral resolution. The DBSP spectrum alone reveals the presence of a pressure broadened line wing for Na, the line cores for both Na and K, and tentative evidence for H$_2$O. We obtain consistent results from the spectral retrieval analyses performed on the DBSP-only dataset and the DBSP, HST, and Spitzer combined dataset. Our retrievals suggest a mostly clear atmosphere for HAT-P-1b, with a cloud coverage of $22^{+5}_{-3}$% that is dominated by enhanced haze. We derive subsolar abundances for Na, K, and C, and subsolar-to-solar for O. Future observations with James Webb Space Telescope and ground-based high-resolution spectrographs should be able to not only confirm the presence of these species but also stringently constrain the formation and migration pathways for HAT-P-1b.

  • The JCMT BISTRO Survey: A Spiral Magnetic Field in a Hub-filament Structure, Monoceros R2

    摘要: We present and analyze observations of polarized dust emission at 850 $\mu$m towards the central 1 pc $\times$ 1 pc hub-filament structure of Monoceros R2 (Mon R2). The data are obtained with SCUBA-2/POL-2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) as part of the BISTRO (B-fields in Star-forming Region Observations) survey. The orientations of the magnetic field follow the spiral structure of Mon R2, which are well-described by an axisymmetric magnetic field model. We estimate the turbulent component of the magnetic field using the angle difference between our observations and the best-fit model of the underlying large-scale mean magnetic field. This estimate is used to calculate the magnetic field strength using the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, for which we also obtain the distribution of volume density and velocity dispersion using a column density map derived from $Herschel$ data and the C$^{18}$O ($J$ = 3-2) data taken with HARP on the JCMT, respectively. We make maps of magnetic field strengths and mass-to-flux ratios, finding that magnetic field strengths vary from 0.02 to 3.64 mG with a mean value of 1.0 $\pm$ 0.06 mG, and the mean critical mass-to-flux ratio is 0.47 $\pm$ 0.02. Additionally, the mean Alfv\'en Mach number is 0.35 $\pm$ 0.01. This suggests that in Mon R2, magnetic fields provide resistance against large-scale gravitational collapse, and magnetic pressure exceeds turbulent pressure. We also investigate the properties of each filament in Mon R2. Most of the filaments are aligned along the magnetic field direction and are magnetically sub-critical.

  • Improved Measurements of Molecular Cloud Distances Based on Global Search

    摘要: The principle of the background-eliminated extinction-parallax (BEEP) method is examining the extinction difference between on- and off-cloud regions to reveal the extinction jump caused by molecular clouds, thereby revealing the distance in complex dust environments. The BEEP method requires high-quality images of molecular clouds and high-precision stellar parallaxes and extinction data, which can be provided by the Milky Way Imaging Scroll Painting (MWISP) CO survey and the Gaia DR2 catalog, as well as supplementary AV extinction data. In this work, the BEEP method is further improved (BEEP-II) to measure molecular cloud distances in a global search manner. Applying the BEEP-II method to three regions mapped by the MWISP CO survey, we collectively measured 238 distances for 234 molecular clouds. Compared with previous BEEP results, the BEEP-II method measures distances efficiently, particularly for those molecular clouds with large angular size or in complicated environments, making it suitable for distance measurements of molecular clouds in large samples.

  • First BISTRO observations of the dark cloud Taurus L1495A-B10: the role of the magnetic field in the earliest stages of low-mass star formation

    摘要: We present BISTRO Survey 850 {\mu}m dust emission polarisation observations of the L1495A-B10 region of the Taurus molecular cloud, taken at the JCMT. We observe a roughly triangular network of dense filaments. We detect 9 of the dense starless cores embedded within these filaments in polarisation, finding that the plane-of-sky orientation of the core-scale magnetic field lies roughly perpendicular to the filaments in almost all cases. We also find that the large-scale magnetic field orientation measured by Planck is not correlated with any of the core or filament structures, except in the case of the lowest-density core. We propose a scenario for early prestellar evolution that is both an extension to, and consistent with, previous models, introducing an additional evolutionary transitional stage between field-dominated and matter-dominated evolution, observed here for the first time. In this scenario, the cloud collapses first to a sheet-like structure. Uniquely, we appear to be seeing this sheet almost face-on. The sheet fragments into filaments, which in turn form cores. However, the material must reach a certain critical density before the evolution changes from being field-dominated to being matter-dominated. We measure the sheet surface density and the magnetic field strength at that transition for the first time and show consistency with an analytical prediction that had previously gone untested for over 50 years (Mestel 1965).

  • Deep Near-Infrared Survey Toward the W40 and Serpens South Region in Aquila Rift: A Comprehensive Catalog of Young Stellar Objects

    摘要: Active star forming regions are excellent laboratories for studying the origins and evolution of young stellar object (YSO) clustering. The W40 - Serpens South region is such a region, and we compile a super near-and-mid-infrared catalog of point sources in it, based on deep NIR observations of CFHT in combination with 2MASS, UKIDSS, and Spitzer catalogs. From this catalog, we identify 832 YSOs, and classify 15, 135, 647, and 35 of them to be the deeply embedded sources, Class I, Class II YSOs, and transition disk sources, respectively. In general, these YSOs are well correlated with the filamentary structures of molecular clouds, especially the deeply embedded sources and the Class I YSOs. The W40 central region is dominated by Class II YSOs, but in the Serpens South region, a half of the YSOs are Class I. We further generate a minimum spanning tree (MST) for all the YSOs. Around the W40 cluster, there are eight prominent MST branches that may trace vestigial molecular gas filaments that once fed gas to the central natal gas clump. Of the eight, only two now include detectable filamentary gas in Herschel data and corresponding Class I YSOs, while the other six are exclusively populated with Class II. Four MST branches overlap with the Serpens South main filament, and where they intersect, molecular gas "hubs" and more Class I YSOs are found. Our results imply a mixture of YSO distributions composed of both primordial and somewhat evolved YSOs in this star forming region.

  • Examinations of CO completeness based on three independent CO surveys

    摘要: We report the global properties recovered by an ongoing CO survey of the Milky Way Imaging Scroll Painting (MWISP) toward the Galactic outskirts. %To better understand the observational biases, Our results are also compared to those extracted by a uniform decomposition method from the CfA 1.2 m CO survey and the FCRAO 14 m outer Galaxy survey (OGS). We find that more extended and unseen structures are present in the MWISP data. The total flux across the disk recovered by the MWISP survey is 1.6 times larger than those recovered by the CfA and OGS surveys in the case of the same resolution. The discrepancies are scaling with distance. For example, in the outermost OSC arm, the flux ratios for MWISP-to-CfA and MWISP-to-OGS increase up to 43.8 and 7.4, respectively. Nonetheless, the census of molecular gas in our Galaxy is still far from complete by the MWISP, with flux completeness of $<$58%. The total mass ratios of the tabulated molecular clouds between different surveys are similar to the CO flux ratio. The application of these ratios to the total H$_{\rm 2}$ mass of our Galaxy yields a correction factor of at least 1.4, meaning that the H$_{\rm 2}$ mass of our Galaxy should be at least 40% more massive than previously determined. Including the completeness correction, an even more significant fraction of the matter should be contributed by baryonic matter. The mass spectrum in the outer Galactic plane is better described by a non-truncating power-law with $\gamma$=$-$1.83$\pm$0.05, and an upper mass of $M_0$=(1.3$\pm$0.5)$\times$10$^{\rm 6}$ $M_\odot$.
