  • Structural and spectral properties of Galactic plane variable radio sources

    摘要: In the time domain, the radio sky in particular along the Galactic plane direction may vary significantly because of various energetic activities associated with stars, stellar and supermassive black holes. Using multi-epoch Very Large Array surveys of the Galactic plane at 5.0 GHz, Becker et al. (2010) presented a catalogue of 39 variable radio sources in the flux density range 1-70 mJy. To probe their radio structures and spectra, we observed 17 sources with the very-long-baseline interferometric (VLBI) imaging technique and collected additional multi-frequency data from the literature. We detected all of the sources at 5 GHz with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope, but only G23.6644-0.0372 with the European VLBI Network (EVN). Together with its decadal variability and multi-frequency radio spectrum, we interpret it as an extragalactic peaked-spectrum source with a size of <~10 pc. The remaining sources were resolved out by the long baselines of the EVN because of either strong scatter broadening at the Galactic latitude <1 deg or intrinsically very extended structures on centi-arcsec scales. According to their spectral and structural properties, we find that the sample has a diverse nature. We notice two young H II regions and spot a radio star and a candidate planetary nebula. The rest of the sources are very likely associated with radio active galactic nuclei (AGN). Two of them also displays arcsec-scale faint jet activity. The sample study indicates that AGN are commonplace even among variable radio sources in the Galactic plane.

  • VLBI Observations of a sample of Palomar-Green quasars I: parsec-scale morphology

    摘要: We observed 20 Palomar-Green (PG) quasars at low redshift ($z 1 mJy, including 4 radio-loud quasars (RLQs) and 16 radio-quiet quasars (RQQs), using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 5 GHz. Ten RQQs are clearly detected in the VLBA images, and a compact radio core is identified in eight of them, indicating the prevalence of active galactic nucleus (AGN)-related radio emission in this flux-density-limited RQQ sample. The RQQs and RLQs in our sample have a division at $\sim$30~mJy. The radio emission from RQQs appears to be the result of a combination of star formation and AGN-associated activities. All RQQs in our sample have a 5 GHz flux density ratio of Very Large Array (VLA) A-array to D-array $f_{\rm c} = S_{\rm A}^{\rm VLA}/S_{\rm D}^{\rm VLA}$ above 0.2. The RQQs with $f_a$ (VLBA and VLA flux density ratio $S^{\rm VLBA}/S_{\rm A}^{\rm VLA}) > 0.2$ versus $f_a < 0.2$ show significant differences in morphology, compactness and total flux density. $f_{\rm a}$ of RQQs is systematically lower than that of RLQs, probably due to the extended jets or relic jets of RQQs on 10s to 100s parsecs which are resolved out in VLBA images. Future larger samples, especially with the addition of milli-arcsec resolution radio images of RQQs with total flux densities below 1 mJy, can test the conclusions of this paper and contributes to the understanding of the radio emission mechanism of RQQs, and the dichotomy and physical connection between RQQs and RLQs.

  • VLBI astrometry on the white dwarf pulsar AR Scorpii

    摘要: AR Scorpii (AR Sco), the only-known radio-pulsing white dwarf binary, shows unusual pulsating emission at the radio, infrared, optical and ultraviolet bands. To determine its astrometric parameters at the radio band independently, we conducted multi-epoch Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) phase-referencing observations with the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 5 GHz and the Chinese VLBI Network (CVN) plus the Warkworth 30-metre telescope (New Zealand) at 8.6 GHz. By using the differential VLBI astrometry, we provide high-precision astrometric measurements on the parallax ($\pi=8.52_{-0.07}^{+0.04}$ mas), and proper motion ($\mu_{\alpha}=9.48_{-0.07}^{+0.04}$ mas yr$^{-1}$, $\mu_{\delta}=-51.32_{-0.38}^{+0.22}$ mas yr$^{-1}$). The new VLBI results agree with the optical Gaia astrometry. Our kinematic analysis reveals that the Galactic space velocities of AR Sco are quite consistent with that of both intermediate polars (IPs) and polars. Combined with the previous tightest VLBI constraint on the size, our parallax distance suggests that the radio emission of AR Sco should be located within the light cylinder of its white dwarf.

  • Intermediate-mass black holes: finding of episodic, large-scale and powerful jet activity in a dwarf galaxy

    摘要: Dwarf galaxies are characterised by a very low luminosity and low mass. Because of significant accretion and ejection activity of massive black holes, some dwarf galaxies also host low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs). In a few dwarf AGNs, very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations have found faint non-thermal radio emission. SDSS J090613.77+561015.2 is a dwarf AGN owning an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) with a mass of $M_{BH} = 3.6^{+5.9}_{-2.3} \times 10^5 M_{sun}$ and showing a rarely-seen two-component radio structure in its radio nucleus. To further probe their nature, i.e. the IMBH jet activity, we performed additional deep observations with the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 1.66 GHz and 4.99 GHz. We find the more diffuse emission regions and structure details. These new EVN imaging results allow us to reveal a two-sided jet morphology with a size up to about 150 mas (projected length $\sim$140 pc) and a radio luminosity of about $3\times10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The peak feature has an optically thin radio spectrum and thus more likely represents a relatively young ejecta instead of a jet base. The EVN study on SDSS J090613.77+561015.2 demonstrates the existence of episodic, relatively large-scale and powerful IMBH jet activity in dwarf AGNs. Moreover, we collected a small sample of VLBI-detected dwarf AGNs and investigated their connections with normal AGNs. We notice that these radio sources in the dwarf AGNs tend to have steep spectra and small linear sizes, and possibly represent ejecta from scaled-down episodic jet activity.

  • Convection and Clouds under Different Planetary Gravities Simulated by a Small-domain Cloud-resolving Model

    摘要: In this study, we employ a cloud-resolving model (CRM) to investigate how gravity influences convection and clouds in a small-domain (96 km by 96 km) radiative-convective equilibrium (RCE). Our experiments are performed with a horizontal grid spacing of 1 km, which can resolve large (> 1 km$^2$) convective cells. We find that under a given stellar flux, sea surface temperature increases with decreasing gravity. This is because a lower-gravity planet has larger water vapor content and more clouds, resulting in a larger clear-sky greenhouse effect and a stronger cloud warming effect in the small domain. By increasing stellar flux under different gravity values, we find that the convection shifts from a quasi-steady state to an oscillatory state. In the oscillatory state, there are convection cycles with a period of several days, comprised of a short wet phase with intense surface precipitation and a dry phase with no surface precipitation. When convection shifts to the oscillatory state, water vapor content and high-level cloud fraction increase substantially, resulting in rapid warming. After the transition to the oscillatory state, the cloud net positive radiative effect decreases with increasing stellar flux, which indicates a stabilizing climate effect. In the quasi-steady state, the atmospheric absorption features of CO$_2$ are more detectable on lower-gravity planets because of their larger atmospheric heights. While in the oscillatory state, the high-level clouds mute almost all the absorption features, making the atmospheric components hard to be characterized.

    摘要: Observational searches for intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs; $10^2 - 10^6$ $M_\odot$) include relatively isolated dwarf galaxies. For those that host active galactic nuclei (AGNs), the IMBH nature may be discerned through the accretion - jet activity. We present radio observations of four AGN-hosting dwarf galaxies (which potentially harbor IMBHs). Very large array (VLA) observations indicate steep spectra (indices of $-$0.63 to $-$1.05) between 1.4 and 9 GHz. A comparison with the 9 GHz in-band spectral index however shows a steepening for GH047 and GH158 (implying older/relic emission) and flattening for GH106 and GH163 (implying recent activity). Overlapping emission regions in the VLA 1.4 GHz and our very long baseline array (VLBA) 1.5 GHz observations, and possibly symmetric pc-scale extensions are consistent with recent activity in the latter two. Using the compact VLBA radio luminosity, X-ray luminosity (probing the accretion activity) and the black hole masses, all AGNs are found to lie on the empirical fundamental plane relation. The four AGN are radio quiet with relatively higher Eddington ratios ($0.04 - 0.32$) and resemble the X-ray binaries during spectral state transitions that entail an outflow ejection. Furthermore, the radio to X-ray luminosity ratio $\log{R_\mathrm{X}}$ of $-3.9$ to $-5.6$ in these four sources support the scenarios including corona mass ejection from accretion disk and wind activity. The growth to kpc-scales likely proceeds along a trajectory similar to young AGNs and peaked spectrum sources. The above complex clues can thus aid in the detection and monitoring of IMBHs in the nearby Universe.

  • The X-shaped radio galaxy J0725+5835 is associated with an AGN pair

    摘要: X-shaped radio galaxies (XRGs) are those that exhibit two pairs of unaligned radio lobes (main radio lobes and "wings"), one of the promising models for the peculiar morphology is jet re-orientation. To clarify it, we conducted the European VLBI Network (EVN) 5 GHz observation of an XRG J0725+5835, which resembles the archetypal binary AGNs 0402+379 in radio morphology but it is larger in angular size. In our observation, two milliarcsec (mas) scale radio components with non-thermal radio emission are detected, each of them coincides with an optical counterpart with similar photometric redshift and (optical and infrared) magnitude, corresponding to dual active nuclei. Furthermore, with the improved VLA images, we find a bridge between the two radio cores and a jet bending in the region surrounding the companion galaxy, which further supports the interplay between the main and companion galaxies. In addition, we also report the discovery of an arcsec-scale jet in the companion. Given the projected separation of $\sim100$ kpc between the main and companion galaxies, XRG J0725+5835 is likely associated with a dual jetted-AGN system. In both EVN and VLA observations, we find signatures that the jet is changing its direction, which is likely responsible for the X-shaped morphology. On the origin of jet re-orientation, several scenarios are discussed.

  • Thermocline Depth on Water-rich Exoplanets

    摘要: Water-rich exoplanet is a type of terrestrial planet that is water-rich and its ocean depth can reach tens of to hundreds of kilo-meters with no exposed continents. Due to the lack of exposed continents, neither western boundary current nor coastal upwelling exists, and ocean overturning circulation becomes the most important way to return the nutrients deposited in deep ocean back to the thermocline and to the surface ocean.Here we investigate the depth of the thermocline in both wind-dominated and mixing-dominated systems on water-rich exoplanets using the global ocean model MITgcm. We find that the wind-driven circulation is dominated by overturning cells through Ekman pumping and subduction and by zonal (west--east) circum-longitudinal currents, similar to the Antarctic Circumpolar Current on Earth. The wind-influenced thermocline depth shows little dependence on the ocean depth, and under a large range of parameters, the thermocline is restricted within the upper layers of the ocean. The mixing-influenced thermocline is limited within the upper 10 km of the ocean and can not reach the bottom of the ocean even under extremely strong vertical mixing. The scaling theories for the thermocline depth on Earth are applicable for the thermocline depth on water-rich exoplanets. However, due to the lack of exposed continents, the zonal and meridional flow speeds are not in the same magnitude as that in the oceans of Earth, which results in the scaling relationships for water-rich exoplanets are a little different from that used on Earth.

  • Planetary climate under extremely high vertical diffusivity

    摘要: Planets with large moon(s) or those in the habitable zone of low-mass stars may experience much stronger tidal force and tide-induced ocean mixing than that on Earth. Thus, the vertical diffusivity (or, more precisely, diapycnal diffusivity) on such planets, which represents the strength of vertical mixing in the ocean, would be greater than that on Earth. In this study, we explore the effects of extremely high diffusivity on the ocean circulation and surface climate of Earth-like planets in one asynchronous rotation orbit. The response of planetary climate to 10 and 100 times greater vertical diffusivity than that found on Earth is investigated using a fully coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model. In order to perform a clear comparison with the climate of modern Earth, Earth's orbit, land-sea configuration, and present levels of greenhouse gases are included in the simulations. We find that a larger vertical diffusivity intensifies the meridional overturning circulation (MOC) in the ocean, which transports more heat to polar regions and melts sea ice there. Feedback associated with sea ice, clouds, and water vapor act to further amplify surface warming. When the vertical diffusivity is 10 (100) times the present-day value, the magnitude of MOC increases by $\approx$3 (18) times, and the global-mean surface temperature increases by $\approx$4$^{\circ}$C (10$^{\circ}$C). This study quantifies the climatic effect of an extremely strong vertical diffusivity and confirms an indirect link between planetary orbit, tidal mixing, ocean circulation, and surface climate. Our results suggest a moderate effect of varying vertical ocean mixing on planetary climate.

  • Is there a sub-parsec-scale jet base in the nearby dwarf galaxy NGC 4395?

    摘要: NGC 4395 is a dwarf galaxy at a distance of about 4.3 Mpc (scale: ~0.021 pc mas$^{-1}$). It hosts an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) with a mass between ~10$^4$ and ~10$^5$ solar masses. The early radio observations of NGC 4395 with the very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) network, High Sensitivity Array (HSA), at 1.4 GHz in 2005 showed that its nucleus has a sub-mJy outflow-like feature (E) extending over 15 mas. To probe the possibility of the feature E as a continuous jet with a base physically coupled with the accretion disc, we performed deep VLBI observations with the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 5 GHz, and analysed the archival data obtained with the HSA at 1.4 GHz in 2008, NSF's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) at 12-18 GHz and the Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array (ALMA) at 237 GHz. The feature E displays more diffuse structure in the HSA image of 2008 and has no compact substructure detected in the EVN image. Together with the optically thin steep spectrum and the extremely large angular offset (about 220 mas) from the accurate optical Gaia position, we explain the feature E as nuclear shocks likely formed by the IMBH's episodic ejection or wide-angle outflow. The VLA and ALMA observations find a sub-mJy pc-scale diffuse feature, possibly tracing a thermal free-free emission region near the IMBH. There is no detection of a jet base at the IMBH position in the VLBI maps. The non-detections give an extremely low luminosity of <=4.7 x 10$^{33}$ erg s$^{-1}$ at 5 GHz and indicate no evidence of a disc-jet coupling on sub-pc scales.

  • Idealized 2D Cloud-Resolving Simulations for Tidally Locked Habitable Planets

    摘要: Cloud is critical for planetary climate and habitability, but it is also one of the most challenging parts of studying planets in and beyond the solar system. Here we use a cloud-resolving model (CRM) with high resolution (2 km) in a two-dimensional (2D) configuration to simulate the clouds and circulation on tidally locked aqua-planets. We find that the substellar area is covered by deep convective clouds, the nightside is dominated by low-level clouds, and these two are linked by a global-scale Walker circulation. We further find that a uniform surface warming causes the substellar cloud width to decrease, but a reduction in day-night surface temperature contrast or an increase in longwave radiative cooling rate causes the substellar cloud width to increase. These relationships can be roughly interpreted based on simple thermodynamic theories. Comparing the results between CRM and global 3D general circulation model (GCM), we find that they show qualitatively consistent results, including the Walker circulation, the substellar clouds, and the responses of the substellar ascending area and strength to changes in surface temperature or in its zonal contrast. But, large quantitative differences exist, such as the magnitude of cloud water path, the cloud width, and their responses to external forcings. These results increase our confidence in using GCMs for modeling exoplanetary climates, although large quantitative uncertainties should always exist. Future work is required to use 3D CRM(s) with realistic radiative transfer and with the Coriolis force to examine the clouds and climate of tidally locked planets.

  • Asymmetry and Variability in the Transmission Spectra of Tidally Locked Habitable Planets

    摘要: Spatial heterogeneity and temporal variability are general features in planetary weather and climate, due to the effects of planetary rotation, uneven stellar flux distribution, fluid motion instability, etc. In this study, we investigate the asymmetry and variability in the transmission spectra of 1:1 spin--orbit tidally locked (or called synchronously rotating) planets around low-mass stars. We find that for rapidly rotating planets, the transit atmospheric thickness on the evening terminator (east of the substellar region) is significantly larger than that of the morning terminator (west of the substellar region). The asymmetry is mainly related to the spatial heterogeneity in ice clouds, as the contributions of liquid clouds and water vapor are smaller. The underlying mechanism is that there are always more ice clouds on the evening terminator, due to the combined effect of coupled Rossby--Kelvin waves and equatorial superrotation that advect vapor and clouds to the east, especially at high levels of the atmosphere. For slowly rotating planets, the asymmetry reverses (the morning terminator has a larger transmission depth than the evening terminator) but the magnitude is small or even negligible. For both rapidly and slowly rotating planets, there is strong variability in the transmission spectra. The asymmetry signal is nearly impossible to be observed by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), because the magnitude of the asymmetry (about 10 ppm) is smaller than the instrumental noise and the high variability further increases the challenge.

  • Smaller Sensitivity of Precipitation to Surface Temperature under Massive Atmospheres

    摘要: Precipitation and its response to forcings is an important aspect of planetary climate system. In this study, we examine the strength of precipitation in the experiments with different atmospheric masses and their response to surface warming, using three global atmospheric general circulation models (GCMs) and one regional cloud-resolving model (CRM). We find that precipitation is weaker when atmospheric mass is larger for a given surface temperature. Furthermore, the increasing rate of precipitation with increasing surface temperature under a larger atmospheric mass is smaller than that under a smaller atmospheric mass. These behaviors can be understood based on atmospheric or surface energy balance. Atmospheric mass influences Rayleigh scattering, multiple scattering in the atmosphere, pressure broadening, lapse rate, and thereby precipitation strength. These results have important implications on the climate and habitability of early Earth, early Mars, and exoplanets with oceans.

    摘要: We observed 20 Palomar-Green (PG) quasars at low redshift ($z 1 mJy, including 4 radio-loud quasars (RLQs) and 16 radio-quiet quasars (RQQs), using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 5 GHz. Ten RQQs are clearly detected in the VLBA images, and a compact radio core is identified in eight of them, indicating the prevalence of active galactic nucleus (AGN)-related radio emission in this flux-density-limited RQQ sample. The RQQs and RLQs in our sample have a division at $\sim$30~mJy. The radio emission from RQQs appears to be the result of a combination of star formation and AGN-associated activities. All RQQs in our sample have a 5 GHz flux density ratio of Very Large Array (VLA) A-array to D-array $f_{\rm c} = S_{\rm A}^{\rm VLA}/S_{\rm D}^{\rm VLA}$ above 0.2. The RQQs with $f_a$ (VLBA and VLA flux density ratio $S^{\rm VLBA}/S_{\rm A}^{\rm VLA}) > 0.2$ versus $f_a < 0.2$ show significant differences in morphology, compactness and total flux density. $f_{\rm a}$ of RQQs is systematically lower than that of RLQs, probably due to the extended jets or relic jets of RQQs on 10s to 100s parsecs which are resolved out in VLBA images. Future larger samples, especially with the addition of milli-arcsec resolution radio images of RQQs with total flux densities below 1 mJy, can test the conclusions of this paper and contributes to the understanding of the radio emission mechanism of RQQs, and the dichotomy and physical connection between RQQs and RLQs.

  • Atmospheric Overturning Circulation on Dry, Tidally-locked Rocky Planets is Mainly Driven by Radiative Cooling

    摘要: In this study, we examine the driving mechanism for the atmospheric overturning circulation on dry, tidally-locked rocky planets without the condensation of water vapor or other species. We find that the main driving process is the radiative cooling of CO2 (or other non-condensable greenhouse gases) rather than CO2 greenhouse warming or stellar radiation. Stellar radiation is the ultimate mechanism but not the direct mechanism. Due to the combination of the uneven distribution in the stellar radiation and effective horizontal energy transports in the free troposphere, there is strong temperature inversion in the area away from the substellar region. This inversion makes CO2 to have a radiative cooling effect rather than a radiative warming effect for the atmosphere, same as that in the stratosphere of Earth's atmosphere. This cooling effect produces negative buoyancy and drives large-scale downwelling, supporting the formation of a global-scale overturning circulation. If CO2 is excluded from the atmosphere, the overturning circulation becomes very weak, regardless the level of stellar radiation. This mechanism is completely different from that for the atmospheric overturning circulation on Earth or on moist, tidally-locked rocky planets, where latent heat release and/or baroclinic instability are the dominated mechanisms. Our study improves the understanding of the atmospheric circulation on tidally-locked exoplanets and also on other dry planets, such as Venus and Mars in the solar system.

  • ET White Paper: To Find the First Earth 2.0

    摘要: We propose to develop a wide-field and ultra-high-precision photometric survey mission, temporarily named "Earth 2.0 (ET)". This mission is designed to measure, for the first time, the occurrence rate and the orbital distributions of Earth-sized planets. ET consists of seven 30cm telescopes, to be launched to the Earth-Sun's L2 point. Six of these are transit telescopes with a field of view of 500 square degrees. Staring in the direction that encompasses the original Kepler field for four continuous years, this monitoring will return tens of thousands of transiting planets, including the elusive Earth twins orbiting solar-type stars. The seventh telescope is a 30cm microlensing telescope that will monitor an area of 4 square degrees toward the galactic bulge. This, combined with simultaneous ground-based KMTNet observations, will measure masses for hundreds of long-period and free-floating planets. Together, the transit and the microlensing telescopes will revolutionize our understandings of terrestrial planets across a large swath of orbital distances and free space. In addition, the survey data will also facilitate studies in the fields of asteroseismology, Galactic archeology, time-domain sciences, and black holes in binaries.
