  • Not that simple: the metallicity dependence of the wide binary fraction changes with separation and stellar mass

分类: 天文学 >> 天文学 提交时间: 2023-02-19

摘要: The metallicity dependence of the wide binary fraction (WBF) is critical for studying the formation of wide binaries. While controversial results have been found in recent years. Here we combine the wide binary catalog recognized from Gaia EDR3 and stellar parameters from LAMOST to investigate this topic. Taking bias of the stellar temperature at given separations into account, we find that the relationship between the WBF and metallicity depends on temperature for the thin-disk at s > 200 AU. It changes from negative to positive as the temperature increases from 4000 K to 7500 K. This temperature/mass dependence is not seen for the thick-disk. Besides, the general tendency between the WBF and metallicity varies with the separation, consistent with previous results. It shows anti-correlation at small separations, s < 200 AU for the thin-disk and s < 600 AU for the thick-disk. Then it becomes an "arcuate" shape at larger separations (hundreds to thousands of AU), peaking at [Fe/H] ~ 0.1 for the thin-disk and [Fe/H] ~ -0.5 for the thick disk. Finally it becomes roughly flat for the thin-disk at 1000 < s < 10000 AU. Our work provides new observational evidences for theoretical studies on binary formation and evolution.

  • LAMOST Time-Domain Survey: First Results of four $K$2 plates

摘要: From Oct. 2019 to Apr. 2020, LAMOST performs a time-domain spectroscopic survey of four $K$2 plates with both low- and med-resolution observations. The low-resolution spectroscopic survey gains 282 exposures ($\approx$46.6 hours) over 25 nights, yielding a total of about 767,000 spectra, and the med-resolution survey takes 177 exposures ($\approx$49.1 hours) over 27 nights, collecting about 478,000 spectra. More than 70%/50% of low-resolution/med-resolution spectra have signal-to-noise ratio higher than 10. We determine stellar parameters (e.g., $T_{\rm eff}$, log$g$, [Fe/H]) and radial velocity (RV) with different methods, including LASP, DD-Payne, and SLAM. In general, these parameter estimations from different methods show good agreement, and the stellar parameter values are consistent with those of APOGEE. We use the $Gaia$ DR2 RV data to calculate a median RV zero point (RVZP) for each spectrograph exposure by exposure, and the RVZP-corrected RVs agree well with the APOGEE data. The stellar evolutionary and spectroscopic masses are estimated based on the stellar parameters, multi-band magnitudes, distances and extinction values. Finally, we construct a binary catalog including about 2700 candidates by analyzing their light curves, fitting the RV data, calculating the binarity parameters from med-resolution spectra, and cross-matching the spatially resolved binary catalog from $Gaia$ EDR3. The LAMOST TD survey is expected to get breakthrough in various scientific topics, such as binary system, stellar activity, and stellar pulsation, etc.

  • Fast-response silicon photonic microheater induced by parity-time symmetry breaking

摘要: Thermo-optic microheater is indispensable in silicon photonic devices for smart and reconfigurable photonic networks. Much efforts have been made to improve the metallic microheater performance in the past decades. However, because of the metallic nature of light absorption, placing the metallic microheater very close to the waveguide for fast response is impractical and has not been done experimentally. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a metallic microheater placed very close to the waveguide based on parity-time (PT) symmetry breaking. The intrinsic high loss of metallic heater ensures the system will operate in the PT-symmetry-broken region, which guarantee the low loss of light in the silicon waveguide. Moreover, heating at a close range significantly reduces the response time. A fast response time of ~1 us is achieved without introducing extra loss. The insertion loss is only 0.1 dB for the long heater. The modulation bandwidth is 280 kHz, which is an order of magnitude improvement when compared with that of the mainstream thermo-optic phase shifters. To verify the capability of large-scale integration, a 1*8 phased array for beam steering is also demonstrated experimentally with the PT-symmetry-broken metallic heaters. Our work provides a novel design concept for low-loss fast-response optical switches with dissipative materials and offers a new approach to enhance the performance of thermo-optic phase shifters.
