  • Surface magnetism of rapidly rotating red giants: single versus close binary stars

    摘要: According to dynamo theory, stars with convective envelopes efficiently generate surface magnetic fields, which manifest as magnetic activity in the form of starspots, faculae, flares, when their rotation period is shorter than their convective turnover time. Most red giants, having undergone significant spin down while expanding, have slow rotation and no spots. However, based on a sample of about 4500 red giants observed by the NASA Kepler mission, a previous study showed that about 8 % display spots, including about 15 % that belong to close binary systems. Here, we shed light on a puzzling fact: for rotation periods less than 80 days, a red giant that belongs to a close binary system displays a photometric modulation about an order of magnitude larger than that of a single red giant with similar rotational period and physical properties. We investigate whether binarity leads to larger magnetic fields when tides lock systems, or if a different spot distribution on single versus close binary stars can explain this fact. For this, we measure the chromospheric emission in the CaII H & K lines of 3130 of the 4465 stars studied in a previous work thanks to the LAMOST survey. We show that red giants in a close-binary configuration with spin-orbit resonance display significantly larger chromospheric emission than single stars, suggesting that tidal locking leads to larger magnetic fields at a fixed rotational period. Beyond bringing interesting new observables to study the evolution of binary systems, this result could be used to distinguish single versus binary red giants in automatic pipelines based on machine learning.

  • TESS Asteroseismic Analysis of HD 76920: The Giant Star Hosting An Extremely Eccentric Exoplanet

    摘要: The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission searches for new exoplanets. The observing strategy of TESS results in high-precision photometry of millions of stars across the sky, allowing for detailed asteroseismic studies of individual systems. In this work, we present a detailed asteroseismic analysis of the giant star HD 76920 hosting a highly eccentric giant planet ($e = 0.878$) with an orbital period of 415 days, using 5 sectors of TESS light curve that cover around 140 days of data. Solar-like oscillations in HD 76920 are detected around $52 \, \mu$Hz by TESS for the first time. By utilizing asteroseismic modeling that takes classical observational parameters and stellar oscillation frequencies as constraints, we determine improved measurements of the stellar mass ($1.22 \pm 0.11\, M_\odot$), radius ($8.68 \pm 0.34\,R_\odot$), and age ($5.2 \pm 1.4\,$Gyr). With the updated parameters of the host star, we update the semi-major axis and mass of the planet as $a=1.165 \pm 0.035$ au and $M_{\rm p}\sin{i} = 3.57 \pm 0.22\,M_{\rm Jup}$. With an orbital pericenter of $0.142 \pm 0.005$ au, we confirm that the planet is currently far away enough from the star to experience negligible tidal decay until being engulfed in the stellar envelope. We also confirm that this event will occur within about 100\,Myr, depending on the stellar model used.

  • Modeling Stellar Oscillations and Granulation in Radial Velocity Time Series: A Fourier-based Method

    摘要: Tens of thousands of solar-like oscillating stars have been observed by space missions. Their photometric variability in the Fourier domain can be parameterized by a sum of two super-Lorentizian functions for granulation and a Gaussian-shaped power excess for oscillation. The photometric granulation/oscillation parameters scale with stellar parameters and they can also make predictions for corresponding parameters in radial velocity measurements. Based on scaling relations, we simulate realistic radial velocity time series and examine how the root-mean-square scatter of radial velocity measurements varies with stellar parameters and different observation strategies such as the length of integration time and gaps in the time series. Using stars with extensive spectroscopic observations from the spectrographs (SONG and HARPS), we measure the granulation amplitude and timescale from the power spectrum of the radial velocity time series. We compare these measurements with literature values based on Kepler photometry. We find that the granulation amplitude in radial velocity can be well predicted from the photometry and scaling relations. Both granulation timescales in radial velocity agree with those predicted from photometry for giants and sub-giants. However, for main-sequence stars, only one granulation timescale in radial velocity is in agreement with the photometric-based values, while the other timescale generally lies at lower frequencies compared to the result of photometry. In conclusion, we show the photometric scaling relations from Kepler photometry and the scaling relationship to Doppler observations can be very useful for predicting the photometric and radial velocity stellar variabilities due to stellar granulation and oscillation.

  • Ages of Main-Sequence Turn-Off Stars from the GALAH Survey

    摘要: Main sequence turn-off (MSTO) stars are good tracers of Galactic populations since their ages can be reliably estimated from atmospheric parameters. Based on the GALAH survey, we use the Yale Rotation Evolution Code to determine ages of 2926 MSTO stars with mean age uncertainty $\sim$10\% considering the variation of C and O abundances. Ages of CO-poor stars are systematically affected by $\sim$10\% due to the C and O abundances, globally shifting to $\sim$0.5 Gyr older compared to the results using solar metal-mixture. Of the stars with \mbox{[Fe/H] $\sim$0.3-0.5} or \mbox{[O/Fe]~$\leq$~-0.25}, many have fractional age differences~$\geq$~20\%, and even reach up to 36\%. The age-metallicity relation appears to possibly exist two distinct sequences: a young sequence of stars with age mostly $$ 7 Gyr, overlapping at 5 Gyr $\leq$~age~$\leq$ 7 Gyr. Moreover, the trends of abundances to age ratios show two corresponding sequences, especially in [O/Fe]-age plane. We also find that [Y/Mg] is a good chemical clock in disk populations. The young sequence and the old sequence can not be separated based on chemistry or kinematics, therefore stellar age is an important parameter to distinguish these two sequences in our sample.

  • Revised extinctions and radii for 1.5 million stars observed by APOGEE, GALAH, and RAVE

    摘要: Asteroseismology has become widely accepted as a benchmark for accurate and precise fundamental stellar properties. It can therefore be used to validate and calibrate stellar parameters derived from other approaches. Meanwhile, one can leverage large-volume surveys in photometry, spectroscopy, and astrometry to infer stellar parameters over a wide range of evolutionary stages, independently of asteroseismology. Our pipeline, SEDEX, compares the spectral energy distribution predicted by the MARCS and BOSZ model spectra with 32 photometric bandpasses, combining data from 9 major, large-volume photometric surveys. We restrict the analysis to targets with available spectroscopy from the APOGEE, GALAH, and RAVE surveys to lift the temperature-extinction degeneracy. The cross-survey atmospheric parameter and uncertainty estimates are homogenized with artificial neural networks. Validation of our results with CHARA interferometry, HST CALSPEC spectrophotometry, and asteroseismology, shows that we achieve high precision and accuracy. We present a catalog of improved interstellar extinction ($\sigma_{A_V} \simeq$ 0.14 mag) and stellar radii ($\sigma_R/R \simeq$ 7.4\%) for $\sim$1.5 million stars in the low- to high-extinction ($A_V \lesssim 6 $ mag) fields observed by the spectroscopic surveys. We derive global extinctions for 184 Gaia DR2 open clusters, and confirm the differential extinction in NGC 6791 and NGC 6819 that have been subject to extensive asteroseismic analysis. Furthermore, we report 36,854 double-lined spectroscopic main-sequence binary candidates. This catalog will be valuable for providing constraints on detailed modelling of stars and for constructing 3D dust maps of the Kepler field, the TESS CVZs, and the PLATO long duration observation fields.

  • Astroconformer: Inferring Surface Gravity of Stars from Stellar Light Curves with Transformer

    摘要: We introduce Astroconformer, a Transformer-based model to analyze stellar light curves from the Kepler mission. We demonstrate that Astrconformer can robustly infer the stellar surface gravity as a supervised task. Importantly, as Transformer captures long-range information in the time series, it outperforms the state-of-the-art data-driven method in the field, and the critical role of self-attention is proved through ablation experiments. Furthermore, the attention map from Astroconformer exemplifies the long-range correlation information learned by the model, leading to a more interpretable deep learning approach for asteroseismology. Besides data from Kepler, we also show that the method can generalize to sparse cadence light curves from the Rubin Observatory, paving the way for the new era of asteroseismology, harnessing information from long-cadence ground-based observations.

  • ET White Paper: To Find the First Earth 2.0

    摘要: We propose to develop a wide-field and ultra-high-precision photometric survey mission, temporarily named "Earth 2.0 (ET)". This mission is designed to measure, for the first time, the occurrence rate and the orbital distributions of Earth-sized planets. ET consists of seven 30cm telescopes, to be launched to the Earth-Sun's L2 point. Six of these are transit telescopes with a field of view of 500 square degrees. Staring in the direction that encompasses the original Kepler field for four continuous years, this monitoring will return tens of thousands of transiting planets, including the elusive Earth twins orbiting solar-type stars. The seventh telescope is a 30cm microlensing telescope that will monitor an area of 4 square degrees toward the galactic bulge. This, combined with simultaneous ground-based KMTNet observations, will measure masses for hundreds of long-period and free-floating planets. Together, the transit and the microlensing telescopes will revolutionize our understandings of terrestrial planets across a large swath of orbital distances and free space. In addition, the survey data will also facilitate studies in the fields of asteroseismology, Galactic archeology, time-domain sciences, and black holes in binaries.

  • Three low-mass companions around aged stars discovered by TESS

    摘要: We report the discovery of three transiting low-mass companions to aged stars: a brown dwarf (TOI-2336b) and two objects near the hydrogen burning mass limit (TOI-1608b and TOI-2521b). These three systems were first identified using data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). TOI-2336b has a radius of $1.05\pm 0.04\ R_J$, a mass of $69.9\pm 2.3\ M_J$ and an orbital period of 7.71 days. TOI-1608b has a radius of $1.21\pm 0.06\ R_J$, a mass of $90.7\pm 3.7\ M_J$ and an orbital period of 2.47 days. TOI-2521b has a radius of $1.01\pm 0.04\ R_J$, a mass of $77.5\pm 3.3\ M_J$ and an orbital period of 5.56 days. We found all these low-mass companions are inflated. We fitted a relation between radius, mass and incident flux using the sample of known transiting brown dwarfs and low-mass M dwarfs. We found a positive correlation between the flux and the radius for brown dwarfs and for low-mass stars that is weaker than the correlation observed for giant planets.
