Abstract: The new era has put forward new and higher requirements for innovative talents in terms of their moral qualities, knowledge structure, and professional abilities. In this context, the practice to cultivate innovative talents in science and technology world-wide has presented new trends, including multidisciplinary collaborations, coherent processes, open coordination among education, research and industry sectors, and empowerment through digital transformation. Relying on the advantages of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in scientific and technological innovation, University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) is exploring educational laws to cultivate high-quality innovative and entrepreneurial talents, especially leading talents in science and technology, actively searching for a new path and mode of talent cultivation through the integration of research and education, in respect to creating organizational models, reforming curriculum and teaching systems, and improving ideological and political work, and faculty development to achieve its educational goals.

Abstract: The report of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China regards “invigorating China through research and education and developing a strong workforce for the modernization drive” as a special chapter, and particularly emphasizes that “education, science and technology, and human resources are the foundational and strategic pillars for building a modern socialist country in all respects”. The integration of research and education is an important way to achieve the integrated development of education, technology, and talents. This study traced back to the origin and development of the integration of research and education, analyzed three specific manifestations of cross organizational integration of research and education worldwide, reviewed the development process, institutional logic, and main characteristics of University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) in cultivating high-level innovative talents through the integration of research and education since the reform and opening up, and finally looked forward to the prospect of UCAS in cultivating top innovative talents through the integration of research and education.

  • From Fusion of Research and Teaching to Leading of Science—Strategy to Build Planetary Science Program with Chinese Characteristics

Subjects: Other Disciplines >> Synthetic discipline submitted time 2023-03-28 Cooperative journals: 《中国科学院院刊》

Abstract: Planetary science is a new and interdisciplinary discipline, which was established during the first upsurge of the international deep space explorations in 1960s—1970s of last century. Planetary science is the scientific study of the fundamental characteristics of planets, moons, and comets in the inner and outer of the solar system as well as their formation and evolution processes. Planetary science research mainly depends on deep space exploration, and it is highly interdisplinary and was built from Earth science, space science, and astronomy. The United States is the first country to build the planetary science discipline and the corresponding education system, and their strategy of science leading the deep space exploration makes them the only country in the world with strong planetary science program. Currently, the international deep space exploration is in the middle of second upsurge, and China’s deep space exploration program is under rapid development and has obtained remarkable and world-class achievements, which makes China a rising star in the field of deep space exploration. However, the planetary science discipline in China is not built yet and we also do not have corresponding education system, which neither matches nor supports China’s deep space exploration strategy. The slow development of the planetary science program has greatly limited China’s potential to become a country with powerful deep space exploration capability and strong planetary science program. Thus, the launching of planetary science program as the first level discipline is extremely urgent. University of Chinese Academy of Sciences together with some other universities have capability and advantages to lead the establishment of the first level discipline of planetary science in China and the corresponding education system, which can serve and lead the future deep space exploration and greatly help to promote China to be a country with strong planetary science program. By comparing the history of the development of planetary science program in the United States, we believe that we should take advantage of the philosophy of "The Fusion of Scientific Research and Teaching" in University of Chinese Academy of Sciences and explore a way with China’s own characteristics to the creation of the first level discipline of planetary science.

  • Big Earth Data Promotes Assessment of Even Development

Subjects: Other Disciplines >> Synthetic discipline submitted time 2023-03-28 Cooperative journals: 《中国科学院院刊》

Abstract: Uneven progresses have been widely detected among goals or regions in global sustainable development, which are ascribed to the heterogeneous resource and environmental conditions and trade-offs among goals. In-depth understanding and efforts to reduce such uneven progresses are essential for the holistic achievement of the sustainable development goals (SDGs). This study discusses how bBig Earth Data supports the assessment of the even development among targets and regions by pointing out its advantages in providing high-frequency and more timely data products with higher spatial resolution for the currently poorly achieved SDGs regarding essential human needs and environmental protection. Moreover, the Big Earth Data brings deeper insights into the pattern and cause of the uneven development and disentangles the core issues that restrict the holistic achievement of SDGs.
