摘要: Recently, the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA) collaboration has produced the experiment's first upper limits on the power spectrum of 21-cm fluctuations at z~8 and 10. Here, we use several independent theoretical models to infer constraints on the intergalactic medium (IGM) and galaxies during the epoch of reionization (EoR) from these limits. We find that the IGM must have been heated above the adiabatic cooling threshold by z~8, independent of uncertainties about the IGM ionization state and the nature of the radio background. Combining HERA limits with galaxy and EoR observations constrains the spin temperature of the z~8 neutral IGM to 27 K 3.9 x 10^24 W/Hz/(M_sun/yr) and L_X/SFR<10^40 erg/s/(M_sun/yr). The new HERA upper limits neither support nor disfavor a cosmological interpretation of the recent EDGES detection. The analysis framework described here provides a foundation for the interpretation of future HERA results.

摘要: Hawking radiation from primordial black holes (PBH) can ionize and heat up neutral gas during the cosmic dark ages, leaving imprints on the global 21-cm signal of neutral hydrogen. We use the global 21-cm signal to constrain the abundance of spinning PBHs in mass range of $[2 \times 10^{13}, 10^{18}]$ grams. We consider several extended PBH distribution models. Our results show that 21-cm can set the most stringent PBH bounds in our mass window. Compared with constraints set by {\it Planck} cosmic microwave background (CMB) data, 21-cm limits are more stringent by about two orders of magnitudes. PBHs with higher spin are typically more strongly constrained. Our 21-cm constraints for the monochromatic mass distribution rule out spinless PBHs with initial mass below $1.5 \times 10^{17}\ \r{g}$, whereas extreme Kerr PBHs with reduced initial spin of $a_0=0.999$ are excluded as the dominant dark matter component for masses below $6 \times 10^{17}\ \r{g}$. We also derived limits for the log-normal, power-law and critical collapse PBH mass distributions.

摘要: Scalar perturbations in the early Universe create over-dense regions that can collapse into primordial black holes (PBH). This process emits scalar-induced gravitational waves (SIGW) that behaves like an extra radiation component and contributes to the relativistic degrees of freedom ($N_{\rm{eff}}$). We show that $N_{\rm{eff}}$ limits from cosmic microwave background (CMB) give promising sensitivities on both the abundance of PBHs and the primordial curvature perturbation ($\mathcal{P}_{\mathcal{R}}(k)$) at small scales. We show that {\it Planck} and ACTPol data can exclude supermassive PBHs with peak mass $M_{\bullet} \in [3 \times 10^{5}, 5 \times 10^{10}] {\rm{M}}_{\odot}$ as the major component of dark matter, depending on the shape of the PBHs mass distribution. Future CMB-S4 mission is capable of broadening this limit to a vast PBH mass window of $M_{\bullet} \in [8 \times 10^{-5}, 5 \times 10^{10}] {\rm{M}}_{\odot}$, covering sub-stellar masses. These limits correspond to the enhanced sensitivity of $\mathcal{P}_{\mathcal{R}}(k)$ on scales of $k \in [10^1, 10^{22}]\ \rm{Mpc^{-1}}$, which is much smaller than those scales probed by direct perturbation power spectra (CMB and large-scale structure).

摘要: Cross-correlating the data of neutral hydrogen (HI) 21cm intensity mapping with galaxy surveys is an effective method to extract astrophysical and cosmological information. In this work, we investigate the cross-correlation of MeerKAT single-dish mode HI intensity mapping and China Space Station Telescope (CSST) spectroscopic galaxy surveys. We simulate a survey area of $\sim 300$ $\mathrm{deg}^2$ of MeerKAT and CSST surveys at $z=0.5$ using Multi-Dark N-body simulation. The PCA algorithm is applied to remove the foregrounds of HI intensity mapping, and signal compensation is considered to solve the signal loss problem in the HI-galaxy cross power spectrum caused by the foreground removal process. We find that from CSST galaxy auto and MeerKAT-CSST cross power spectra, the constraint accuracy of the parameter product $\Omega_{\rm HI}b_{\rm HI}r_{{\rm HI},g}$ can reach to $\sim1\%$, which is about one order of magnitude higher than the current results. After performing the full MeerKAT HI intensity mapping survey with 5000 deg$^2$ survey area, the accuracy can be enhanced to $<0.3\%$. This implies that the MeerKAT-CSST cross-correlation can be a powerful tool to probe the cosmic HI property and the evolution of galaxies and the Universe.

摘要: In this work, we propose using the mixture density network (MDN) to estimate cosmological parameters. We test the MDN method by constraining parameters of the $\Lambda$CDM and $w$CDM models using Type Ia supernovae and the power spectra of the cosmic microwave background. We find that the MDN method can achieve the same level of accuracy as the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method, with a slight difference of $\mathcal{O}(10^{-2}\sigma)$. Furthermore, the MDN method can provide accurate parameter estimates with $\mathcal{O}(10^3)$ forward simulation samples, which are useful for complex and resource-consuming cosmological models. This method can process either one data set or multiple data sets to achieve joint constraints on parameters, extendable for any parameter estimation of complicated models in a wider scientific field. Thus, the MDN provides an alternative way for likelihood-free inference of parameters.

摘要: We present a detection of correlated clustering between MeerKAT radio intensity maps and galaxies from the WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey. We find a $7.7\sigma$ detection of the cross-correlation power spectrum, the amplitude of which is proportional to the product of the HI density fraction ($\Omega_{\rm HI}$), HI bias ($b_{\rm HI}$) and the cross-correlation coefficient ($r$). We therefore obtain the constraint $\Omega_{\rm HI} b_{\rm HI} r\,{=}\,[0.86\,{\pm}\,0.10\,({\rm stat})\,{\pm}\,0.12\,({\rm sys})]\,{\times}\,10^{-3}$, at an effective scale of $k_{\rm eff}\,{\sim}\,0.13\,h\,{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$. The intensity maps were obtained from a pilot survey with the MeerKAT telescope, a 64-dish pathfinder array to the SKA Observatory (SKAO). The data were collected from 10.5 hours of observations using MeerKAT's L-band receivers over six nights covering the 11hr field of WiggleZ, in the frequency range $1015-973\,{\rm MHz}$ (0.400$\,{<}\,z\,{<}\,$0.459 in redshift). This detection is the first practical demonstration of the multi-dish auto-correlation intensity mapping technique for cosmology. This marks an important milestone in the roadmap for the cosmology science case with the full SKAO.

摘要: Radio interferometers aiming to measure the power spectrum of the redshifted 21 cm line during the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) need to achieve an unprecedented dynamic range to separate the weak signal from overwhelming foreground emissions. Calibration inaccuracies can compromise the sensitivity of these measurements to the effect that a detection of the EoR is precluded. An alternative to standard analysis techniques makes use of the closure phase, which allows one to bypass antenna-based direction-independent calibration. Similarly to standard approaches, we use a delay spectrum technique to search for the EoR signal. Using 94 nights of data observed with Phase I of the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA), we place approximate constraints on the 21 cm power spectrum at $z=7.7$. We find at 95% confidence that the 21 cm EoR brightness temperature is $\le$(372)$^2$ "pseudo" mK$^2$ at 1.14 "pseudo" $h$ Mpc$^{-1}$, where the "pseudo" emphasises that these limits are to be interpreted as approximations to the actual distance scales and brightness temperatures. Using a fiducial EoR model, we demonstrate the feasibility of detecting the EoR with the full array. Compared to standard methods, the closure phase processing is relatively simple, thereby providing an important independent check on results derived using visibility intensities, or related.

摘要: We report the most sensitive upper limits to date on the 21 cm epoch of reionization power spectrum using 94 nights of observing with Phase I of the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA). Using similar analysis techniques as in previously reported limits (HERA Collaboration 2022a), we find at 95% confidence that $\Delta^2(k = 0.34$ $h$ Mpc$^{-1}$) $\leq 457$ mK$^2$ at $z = 7.9$ and that $\Delta^2 (k = 0.36$ $h$ Mpc$^{-1}) \leq 3,496$ mK$^2$ at $z = 10.4$, an improvement by a factor of 2.1 and 2.6 respectively. These limits are mostly consistent with thermal noise over a wide range of $k$ after our data quality cuts, despite performing a relatively conservative analysis designed to minimize signal loss. Our results are validated with both statistical tests on the data and end-to-end pipeline simulations. We also report updated constraints on the astrophysics of reionization and the cosmic dawn. Using multiple independent modeling and inference techniques previously employed by HERA Collaboration (2022b), we find that the intergalactic medium must have been heated above the adiabatic cooling limit at least as early as $z = 10.4$, ruling out a broad set of so-called "cold reionization" scenarios. If this heating is due to high-mass X-ray binaries during the cosmic dawn, as is generally believed, our result's 99% credible interval excludes the local relationship between soft X-ray luminosity and star formation and thus requires heating driven by evolved low-metallicity stars.

摘要: We present results from an HI counterpart search using the HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS) for a sample of low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs) and ultradiffuse galaxies (UDGs) identified from the Dark Energy Survey (DES). We aimed to establish the redshifts of the DES LSBGs to determine the UDG fraction and understand their properties. Out of 409 galaxies investigated, none were unambiguously detected in HI. Our study was significantly hampered by the high spectral rms of HIPASS and thus in this paper we do not make any strong conclusive claims but discuss the main trends and possible scenarios our results reflect. The overwhelming number of non-detections suggest that: (A) Either all the LSBGs in the groups, blue or red, have undergone environment aided pre-processing and are HI deficient or the majority of them are distant galaxies, beyond the HIPASS detection threshold. (B) The sample investigated is most likely dominated by galaxies with HI masses typical of dwarf galaxies. Had there been Milky Way (MW) size (R_e) galaxies in our sample, with proportionate HI content, they would have been detected, even with the limitations imposed by the HIPASS spectral quality. This leads us to infer that if some of the LSBGs have MW size optical diameters, their HI content is possibly in the dwarf range. More sensitive observations using the SKA precursors in future may resolve these questions.
