  • Comparative Analysis of TRGBs (CATs) from Unsupervised, Multi-Halo-Field Measurements: Contrast is Key

分类: 天文学 >> 天文学 提交时间: 2023-02-19

摘要: The Tip of the Red Giant Branch (TRGB) is an apparent discontinuity in the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) along the giant branch due to the end of the red giant evolutionary phase and is used to measure distances in the local universe. In practice, the tip is often fuzzy and its localization via edge detection response (EDR) relies on several methods applied on a case-by-case basis. It is hard to evaluate how individual choices affect a distance estimation using only a single host field while also avoiding confirmation bias. To devise a standardized approach, we compare unsupervised, algorithmic analyses of the TRGB in multiple halo fields per galaxy, up to 11 fields for a single host and 50 fields across 10 galaxies, using high signal-to-noise stellar photometry obtained by the GHOSTS survey with the Hubble Space Telescope. We first optimize methods for the lowest field-to-field dispersion including spatial filtering to remove star forming regions, smoothing and weighting of the luminosity function, selection of the RGB by color, and tip selection based on the number of likely RGB stars and the ratio of stars above versus below the tip ($R$). We find $R$, which we call the tip `contrast', to be the most important indicator of the quality of EDR measurements; we find that field-to-field EDR repeatability varies from 0.3 mag to $\leq$ 0.05 mag for $R=4$ to 7, respectively, though less than half the fields reach the higher quality. Further, we find that $R$, which varies with the age/metallicity of the stellar population based on models, correlates with the magnitude of the tip (and after accounting for low internal extinction), i.e., a tip-contrast relation with slope of $-0.023\pm0.0046$ mag/ratio, a $\sim 5\sigma$ result that improves standardization of the TRGB. We discuss the value of consistent TRGB standardization across rungs for robust distance ladder measurements.

  • Image plane detection of FRB121102 with the MeerKAT radio telescope

摘要: We present the analysis of radio interferometric 2-s images from a MeerKAT observation of the repeating fast radio burst FRB121102 on September 2019, during which 11 distinct pulses have been previously detected using high time and frequency resolution data cubes. In this work, we detected 6 out of the 11 bursts in the image plane at 1.48 GHz with a minimum peak signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of 5 {\sigma} and a fluence detection limit of 0.512 Jy ms. These constitute the first detections of a fast radio burst (FRB) or a radio transient using 2-s timescale images with MeerKAT data. Analysis of the fitted burst properties revealed a weighted average precision of 1 arcsec in the localization of the bursts. The accurate knowledge of FRB positions is essential for identifying their host galaxy and understanding their mysterious nature which is still unresolved to this day. We also produced 2-s images at 1.09 GHz but yielded no detection which we attributed to the spectral structure of the pulses that are mostly higher in strength in the upper frequencies. We also explore a new approach to difference imaging analysis (DIA) to search for transients and find that our technique has the potential to reduce the number of candidates and could be used to automate the detection of FRBs in the image plane for future MeerKAT observations.

  • Sensitive Chandra coverage of a representative sample of weak-line quasars: revealing the full range of X-ray properties

分类: 天文学 >> 天文学 提交时间: 2023-02-19

摘要: We present deeper Chandra observations for weak-line quasars (WLQs) in a representative sample that previously had limited X-ray constraints, and perform X-ray photometric analyses to reveal the full range of X-ray properties of WLQs. Only 5 of the 32 WLQs included in this representative sample remain X-ray undetected after these observations, and a stacking analysis shows that these 5 have an average X-ray weakness factor of > 85. One of the WLQs in the sample that was known to have extreme X-ray variability, SDSS J1539+3954, exhibited dramatic X-ray variability again: it changed from an X-ray normal state to an X-ray weak state within ~ 3 months in the rest frame. This short timescale for an X-ray flux variation by a factor of $\gtrsim$ 9 further supports the thick disk and outflow (TDO) model proposed to explain the X-ray and multiwavelength properties of WLQs. The overall distribution of the X-ray-to-optical properties of WLQs suggests that the TDO has an average covering factor of the X-ray emitting region of ~ 0.5, and the column density of the TDO can range from $N_{\rm H}$ $\sim 10^{23-24}~{\rm cm}^{-2}$ to $N_{\rm H}$ $\gtrsim 10^{24}~{\rm cm}^{-2}$, which leads to different levels of absorption and Compton reflection (and/or scattering) among WLQs.
