  • Reassessment of Trilophodon connexus Hopwood, 1935 and attributing it to the Choerolophodontidae

    摘要: 间型三棱齿象(Trilophodon connexus Hopwood, 1935)长期以来被认为是中国嵌齿象属 (Gomphotherium)的一个代表种。然而,由于其下颌联合部与下门齿的形态未知,这一归入 存疑。重新研究了来自新疆准噶尔盆地北缘乌伦古河地区哈拉玛盖组的一件此前归为陕西嵌齿象相似种(Gomphotherium cf. G. shensiensis)的下颌。该下颌联合部伸长,呈深槽状, 下门齿缺失,因此确定可归入豕棱齿象科(Choerolophodontidae)。进一步将间型三棱齿象 的正型标本与其相比较,两者颊齿的关键特征完全一致,包括:高度丘型化,m3伸长, 具有四脊,上下颊齿第二脊人字型(chevron)很弱,第二脊中附锥与前中心小尖不愈合, 釉质褶皱、齿谷中小锥及白垩质发育弱或缺失。因此,间型三棱齿象事实上是一种豕棱齿 象类而非嵌齿象。综上所述,暂将其改定为间型豕棱齿象 (Choerolophodon connexus (Hopwood, 1935))。同时,以上特征与北美的索普颌门齿象(Gnathabelodon thorpei)比较接 近。此外,在颌门齿象属和间型豕棱齿象中,颊齿第二脊呈人字型, 釉质褶皱、齿谷中 小锥及白垩质发育强这些典型的豕棱齿象属(Choerolophodon)的特征较弱甚至缺失,但m3 齿脊数变多,这表明颌门齿象属可能起源于东亚的间型豕棱齿象。

  • Cranial and dental material of Gomphotherium wimani (Gomphotheriidae, Proboscidea) from the Middle Miocene of the Linxia Basin, northwestern China

    摘要: 嵌齿象是真象的基干类群,其研究历来受到重视,同时也存在很多争议。维曼嵌齿象(Gomphotherium wimani)是中国的一个特有种,之前仅有一些牙齿和破碎下颌的报道,研究者对其形态特征和演化地位的认识一直比较模糊。本文报道了发现于甘肃省临夏盆地的维曼嵌齿象的新材料,包括上沟地点一件未成年头骨和倒黑沟地点属于同一个体的部分颊齿。通过研究对比,认为维曼嵌齿象是嵌齿象中一个比较进步的种,具有如下独有特征:颊齿的主齿柱前后中心小尖分裂并成嵴状,副齿柱趋向于分裂,发育有弱的副齿柱中心小尖,齿谷中等开阔,齿冠相对较高。对过去发现的维曼嵌齿象材料的厘定表明,该种最初建立时产于泉头沟地点的一颗m3实际上是葛氏铲齿象(Platybelodon grangeri)的M3; 而西宁吊沟地点发现的维曼嵌齿象的一件M3极有可能属于铲齿象类(amebelodontids)。对厘定后的维曼嵌齿象地点的研究表明,维曼嵌齿象分布于中国甘肃、青海的几个中中新统地点,其时代基本上可以与MN6−MN7/8早期相对比,时代跨度估计为15~13 Ma。

  • Reappraisal of Serridentinus gobiensis Osborn & Granger and Miomastodon tongxinensis Chen:the validity of Miomastodon

    摘要: The elephantimorph proboscideans, Serridentinus gobiensis Osborn & Granger, 1932, and Miomastodon tongxinensis Chen, 1978, from the Middle Miocene of northern China, were revised as Zygolophodon gobiensis (Osborn & Granger, 1932). However, their phylogenetic positions are still being debated because of their intermediate morphology between the typical bunodont (Gomphotheriidae) and zygodont (Mammutidae) elephantimorphs. In the present paper, we compare their dental and mandibular morphology with that of the Eurasian Z. turicensis, Gomphotherium subtapiroideum, and G. tassyi, as well as the North American Mio. merriami and G. productum. It appears that S. gobiensis and Mio. tongxinensis share with Mio. merriami the slightly more bunodont molar morphology than that of Z. turicensis, e.g., the thicker enamel, thicker pretrite crescentoids, higher interlophid enamel pillars in buccal view, and the narrower contour majorly caused by the narrower posttrite half loph(id)s. S. gobiensis and Mio. merriami also possess an “erected oval cross-sectioned mandibular tusk”, in which the cross-section is mediolaterally compressed (dorsoventral diameter being larger than the mediolateral one). Whereas, in Z. turicensis and G. productum, the mandibular tusk is “laid oval cross-sectioned”, in which the cross-section is dorsoventrally compressed (dorsoventral diameter is smaller than the mediolateral one). Therefore, it is reasonable to revive the genus Miomastodon Osborn, 1922, which contains the species that were previously attributed to Zygolophodon, but they have relatively bunodont molar morphology (i.e., the robust type of the Z. turicensis group). The mandibular tusk with erected oval cross-section seems to be a synapomorphy of Miomastodon species. Furthermore, the molar morphology of G. subtapiroideum and G. tassyi also exhibits intermediate status between the typical bunodonts and zygodonts. However, the mandibular symphysis of G. subtapiroideum and G. tassyi is stronger than that of Miomastodon, and the mandibular tusk is pyriform cross-sectioned. The validity of Miomastodon and G. subtapiroideum/tassyi obscures the boundary between the Gomphotheriidae and Mammutidae, and suggests that the evolutions of the Gomphotheriidae and Mammutidae are deeply involved in with each other, rather than straightforwardly detached. This phenomenon has been revealed by a collagen sequence analysis among Notiomastodon, Mammut, and extant elephants, which should be further studied.

  • A possible new amphicyonid from the Miocene of the Linxia Basin

    摘要: Here we report a new form of amphicyonid from an uncertain locality in the LinxiaBasin. The derived dental traits imply an affinity to Magericyon, previously known from Europe and possibly southern Asia. The specimen suggests a higher diversity of amphicyonids in eastern Asia than previously thought, and more discovery with stratigraphic information will be needed to elucidate the evolution of Amphicyonidae in eastern Asia.

  • Early Mammut from the Upper Miocene of northern China, and its implications for the evolution and differentiation of Mammutidae

    摘要: Mammut is the terminal taxon of the proboscidean group Mammutidae, which survived to the Late Pleistocene. Although this genus was widely distributed in the Pliocene of Eurasia and the Pleistocene of North America, little is known about its early evolution. Here, we report on Mammut cf. M. obliquelophus from the Upper Miocene of northern China based on new fossil material, including an almost complete juvenile cranium and other remains, which show many primitive features within Mammutidae and clearly demonstrate the morphological evolution of Mammut. The strongly laterally expanded lateral wing of the occiput and the presence of basal constriction of the incisive fossa display cranial similarity between Mammut cf. M. obliquelophus and both Eozygodon morotoensis and Choerolophodon guangheensis, early representatives of the Mammutidae and Choerolophodontidae, respectively, indicating the close relationship between these two groups: both of them are located at the basal phylogenetic positions in Elephantimorpha. This result is further confirmed by a cladistic analysis.

  • Implications for Late Miocene diet from Diceros gansuensis: starch granules in tooth calculus

    摘要: Reconstructing the diet of extinct species is a fundamental goal in vertebrate paleobiology. Dental calculus is the calcium phosphate deposits on teeth, which captures a large number of food particles and contains the food information of ancient animal. It is possible to explore ancient animal dietary and investigate the environmental information from dental calculus. A large number of starch granules were found in dental calculus of Dicros gansuensis excavated from the earliest Late Miocene Guonigou fauna of the Linxia Basin, Gansu Province. It is the first time that starch granules from Late Miocene were found. We classified the ancient starch granules by its morphological characteristics and also analyzed the starch granules of leaves of modern plants around the living environment of D. gansuensis to find modern starch granules and compare them with ancient ones. The results indicate that D. gansuensis may eat not only shrubs leaves, such as the plant from Caprifoliaceae, but also some tree leaves from Juglandaceae (walnut), and maybe some herbs from Ranunculaceae and Polygonaceae. It is consistent with the results of previous morphological studies, and it also provides more information. Our study extends the range of time and object for dental calculus research, and offers more possibilities for research on feeding habits of ancient mammals.

  • First report of Hispanodorcas from the Late Miocene of China

    摘要: 西班牙羚(Hispanodorcas)是一类中小型牛科动物,此前只在泛地中海地区和南亚有 所发现。西班牙羚的分类一直有所争议,曾被认为与羚羊族(Antilopini), 苇羚族(Reduncini) 或角羊族(Oiocerini)有关。报道了在中国庆阳正宁地区的代店化石点首次发现的陇东西班 牙羚新种(H. longdongica sp. nov.), 时代大约为早保德期(约87百万年前)。新材料包括5个头 骨,保存状态各异,提供了迄今为止关于西班牙羚最完整的骨骼信息。其角心长而细、向 后弯曲,且微弱地同向扭曲(homonymous twist); 角心同时还具有和外背侧沟和内腹沟, 这些都是西班牙羚的典型特征。代店地点发现的西班牙羚在已知各种中体型最小,面部和 脑颅之间的弯曲较弱,前后基结节均发育较弱。这些原始的特征表明陇东西班牙羚可能代表了这个属的早期演化阶段。此外,该种头骨与瞪羚(Gazella)的相似之处表明西班牙羚可 能是直接从瞪羚的祖先演化而来,其同向扭转的角心与角羊族一致,可能是两者平行演化 所致。
