  • The spillover effects of financial stress in the workplace

Subjects: Psychology >> Management Psychology submitted time 2024-05-19

Abstract: In recent years, global concern has escalated over personal financial stress, impacting individuals both in their personal lives and at work. However, there remains a lack of comprehensive understanding of its effects on workplace outcomes, including the underlying reasons and conditions. This study presents a framework derived from a systematic review of existing research, delving into the spillover effects of financial stress on the workplace. It examines its manifestations, mechanisms, and the factors that exacerbate or alleviate its impact. Financial stress not only influences individual work-related attitudes, behaviors, performance, occupational outcomes, and work-family dynamics, but also impacts colleagues, teams, and organizational outputs. While it primarily has negative effects, it can also stimulate some positive behaviors. For individuals, its effects are channeled primarily through resource, cognitive, and motivational pathways, while for others, it operates via uncertainty management, compensation control, and emotional contagion. The impact varies depending on employee characteristics, job specifics, and the broader macroeconomic context. Future research should further differentiate between various spillover effects, broaden the research scope and methodologies, explore how stress can be transformed into motivation, and tailor studies to the socio-cultural context of Chinese society. These endeavors will advance our understanding of this issue and offer valuable guidance for management practices.

  • Trend analysis of marital satisfaction of mainland Chinese couples in the past 20 years

Subjects: Psychology >> Social Psychology submitted time 2023-08-28

Abstract: Marriage is the most stable and lasting traditional form of sexual union in human society and an important part of human culture. Marriage satisfaction is a main indicator for measuring marital success. Marriage satisfaction is affected by social, family, individual and other factors and changes in response to society, family and individuals. Thus, changes in marital satisfaction reflect continuous changes in society. Exploring the relationship between marital satisfaction and social change has important reference significance for understanding psychological changes in Chinese society and individuals.
This cross-temporal meta-analysis assessed 92 studies (59122 husbands and wives) published between 2000 and 2021 that used the Evaluating & Nurturing Relationship Issues, Communication, Happiness (enrich), the Marital Adjustment Test (MAT) and the Quality of Marriage Index (QMI) to measure the marital satisfaction of Chinese couples. The China Comprehensive Social Survey (CGSS) analysis was used to discuss the relationship between social indicators and marital satisfaction based on Bronfenbrenner’s ecosystem theory.
The findings are as follows: (1) the marital satisfaction of Chinese couples significantly positively correlates with the year; (2) at the macro level, improving people's quality of life and reducing the household size will increase marriage satisfaction; while, increasing marital satisfaction will promote the pursuit of a better life among couples and maintain family stability and (3) at the micro level, regarding the association between marital satisfaction and social change, the length of marriage, gender, number of children, and the matching degree of education level do not affect marital satisfaction; however, changes due to the presence of children and the degree of education do. In the model of the relationship between social change and marital satisfaction, macro system factors, micro system factors and era changes interact and jointly affect marital satisfaction. Moreover, marital satisfaction will also react to macrosystem factors and promote the harmonious and stable development of society.

  • A dynamic perspective on the relationship between team reflection-in-action and innovation: A moderated mediation model integrating cognition and emotion

Subjects: Management Science >> Development and Management of Human Resources submitted time 2022-01-18

    Abstract:

In a complex and changing market environment, and in the context of China's implementation of an innovation-driven strategy, companies will need to rely on team innovation to establish a unique competitive advantage for its long-term development. The procedural black box in the relationship between team reflection and team innovation has been identified after review of existing research. It has been suggested that reflecting the past can lead to new ideas and changes in the literature, but there is little empirical research conducted on how this is achieved. Based on the traditional idea of after-action reflection, this study proposes the differences in conceptual connotation and empirical measurement of in-action team reflection, examines the differential role of team reflection in different stages of innovation, dynamically analyzes the behavioral outcomes of creative formation and implementation, and proposes the coupling of the two mechanisms, namely information processing at the cognitive level and team emotion at the emotional level, by integrating the motivated information processing theory and the social functions of emotion, to construct an overall model of team reflection on innovation. This study also thoroughly explores the process mechanism, and includes a comprehensive analysis of the moderating role of contextual factors at each stage of the relationship.Specifically, based on the results of theoretical research and empirical test, we intends to contribute to the theoretical research on learning and innovation, and put forward practical suggestions for the enterprises, teams and individuals.

  • Effects of aerobic exercise on memory and its neurobiological mechanism

Subjects: Psychology >> Cognitive Psychology submitted time 2021-08-01

Abstract: Objective Aerobic exercise is the rhythmic and continuous use of large muscle groups with sufficient oxygen supply. The aim of this review is to summarize previous research regarding the effects of aerobic exercise on working memory, episodic memory and implicit memory, and moderators among the relationships. Methods The following databases were used for the computerized searches: CNKI, Web of Science and PubMed. Results Aerobic exercise can improve processing speed in working memory tasks. Moderate to vigorous intensity aerobic exercise before memory encoding or during consolidation can enhance episodic memory. Vigorous intensity aerobic exercise can promote implicit memory. Acute aerobic exercise can increase brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), induce long-term potentiation, activate hippocampus and other memory related brain areas, while chronic aerobic exercise can improve neurogenesis. Limitations Future research should focus on aerobic exercise timing, aerobic exercise duration, aerobic exercise intensity, and other moderating roles, such as cognitive engagement during aerobic exercise, gender and age, and to further elucidate the neurobiological mechanisms underlying effects of aerobic exercise on different types of memory.

  • The dark side of positive leadership: A review and prospect

Subjects: Psychology >> Management Psychology submitted time 2019-02-28

Abstract: Previous leadership research has primarily concentrated on the bright side of positive leadership styles, while paying less attention to their possible dark side. Although the recent years have witnessed an increasing number of these inquiries, there is still a lack of a clear understanding of the dark side of positive leadership. A review of 41 empirical journal articles illustrates the scientific status of this research area. In general, research has illustrated the dark side of behavior-oriented leadership (i.e., transformational, ethical, empowering, inclusive, and benevolent leadership) as well as relationship-oriented leadership (i.e., leader-member exchange) in terms of their negative effects on leaders, followers, and teams. Besides the research that solely examined the negative effect, there is a body of research that investigated the double-edged sword effects and nonlinear effect of positive leadership. Social identity theory, social exchange theory, psychoanalysis theory, social information processing theory, and resource-based theories were primarily used to account for the dark side of positive leadership. Future research should develop an integrated theoretical framework underlying the dark side of positive leadership, extend existing literature by examining the dark side of other leadership styles, and identify the boundary conditions that alleviate these dark side effects. Group differences (e.g., cultures, generation, and gender) should also be considered as boundary conditions of the dark side of positive leadership.
