  • Evolution and Enlightenment of Bachelor of Science in Information Science (BSIS) Programs in U.S. Top iSchools: Re-Investigation of the Curriculum After 10 Years

Subjects: Library Science,Information Science >> Information Science submitted time 2023-04-01 Cooperative journals: 《图书情报工作》

Abstract: [Purpose/significance] After 10 years, this paper re-investigated bachelor of science in information science (BSIS) programs in U.S. top iSchools, and explored the evolution and trend of undergraduate courses in the past 10 years, so as to provide useful experience and reference for educational reform of similar undergraduate majors in information management schools and departments in China.[Method/process] Select BSIS programs offered by top 10 iSchools on U.S. News best graduate schools rankings of library and information studies. Collect the information of bachelor degree programs and corresponding courses through iSchool official websites. Investigate and analyze the changes of overall project design, training objectives, core courses and elective courses, classified the courses and probed into the moving directions of each course classification.[Result/conclusion] Compared with that of 2009, the BSIS programs in U.S. top iSchools had undergone new changes in project development, training objectives setting, core (required)/elective courses design and so on in 2019. By classifying and coding the undergraduate courses of the programs, the courses could be divided into 13 categories, but the distribution of courses in different categories is relatively scattered, showing obvious multi-path and diversified educational characteristics in U.S. top iSchools. Furthermore, this study examined and introduced the recent trends of each course category. The study also discussed five aspects of enlightenment to the undergraduate curricular reform of information management schools and departments in China.

  • Core Team Mining Research Based on Directed Co-Authorship Network——Taking the Field of LIS as an Example

Subjects: Library Science,Information Science >> Information Science submitted time 2023-04-01 Cooperative journals: 《图书情报工作》

Abstract: [Purpose/significance] In order to facilitate the introduction of institutional talents and establish a standardized process for the identifying the domain core team, this study researches the core team in the field from four aspects:author identification in core areas, discrimination of team guidance relationship, team publication tendency and team research direction. [Method/process] The selection process of the core team included:firstly, carrying out the preliminary data specification; secondly, the core region authors were divided based on undirected binary matrix and core-edge structure analysis, and they were adjusted appropriately combined with multi-dimensional index; finally, the core research teams were identified based on the directed weighted network between the first author and the other authors. [Result/conclusion] On the basis of clarifying the basic process of discriminating the team guidance relationship, the following general rules are refined:①In a co-authoring team of the "outer star" topology, the node at the center has a higher probability of being a mentor, while authors of the "cohesive star" topology whose co-authoring team is located in the center of the network have strong scientific research capabilities; ②In a directed weighted network between the first author and the other authors, if two nodes have the relationship between the first author and the corresponding author at the same time, the same affiliated institution, and a certain difference in academic age, there must be a guidance relationship, and a high probability of a mentoring relationship between these two nodes.

  • Staged Evolution, Logic and Prospect of Global Information Policy Research in the Past 50 Years

Subjects: Library Science,Information Science >> Library Science submitted time 2022-11-26 Cooperative journals: 《图书情报工作》

    Abstract:

This paper combs and  clarifies the development logic behind  the evolution ary process of global information policy in the past 50 years, and points out the trends of future research by looking back  at the past. Using  bibliometric analysis,  knowledge mapping  and  other methods to  analyze more than  a thousand  pieces of literature on  information  policy  across more than  half a century, and  summarize the thread  of emergence, evolution, and  future development of information  policy. According  to the characteristic changes of the number of publications,  central and  burst terms,  clustered  keywords,  etc. , the staged  evolutionary  process of global information  policy  was divided  into  the information  society  policy-led  stage (1967 一 1985 ) , the scientific and technological information policy-led stage (1986 — 1992) , the technique diffusion policy-led stage (1993 - 1998 ) , the Internet policy-led stage (1999 - 2005 ) , the data governance policy-led stage (2006  -2011),the social media policy-led  stage (2012  -2014),and  the Internet of Everything  (IoE) policy-led stage (2015-present).  There are profound  interactions between  the staged  evolutionary  process and  the changing  in formation  environment.  In  the future, the path-dependent nature of logical evolution  will continue to  promote the co evolution  of information  policy  research  along  with  information  technology  and  information  environment,  and  to  ad dress the evolving regulatory challenges that comprehensive informatization of society brings to information policy.
