  • Prospects and Strategies for Detecting Nonlinear Gravitational Wave Burst with Memory from Potential Merger Event SDSSJ1430$+$2303 by Pulsar Timing Arrays

    摘要: The recently observed chirping signature in the light curves of Seyfert 1 galaxy SDSSJ1430$+$2303 could be explained by a late-inspiralling supermassive binary black hole (SMBBH) system in the galactic center, which will merge in the near future (or could have merged already). For the merging SMBBH scenario, SDSSJ1430$+$2303 can be a source of nonlinear gravitational wave (GW) burst with memory (BWM), which may provide a promising target for future pulsar timing array (PTA) observations. In this work, we investigate the prospects for detecting the BWM signal from SDSSJ1430$+$2303 by the International PTA (IPTA) and FAST-PTA in the next $5$ years. We firstly propose strategies on searching for this target signal, including the selection of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) and the distribution of observation time. Then we simulate PTA observations based on the proposed strategies and obtain the probability density functions of the network signal-to-noise ratio and parameter-estimation errors of the BWM signal, considering the uncertainties of parameters of the SMBBH and both white and red noises of the selected MSPs. Our result shows that although IPTA can marginally detect the BWM in $5$ years, FAST-PTA can detect it with significantly higher confidence. Moreover, the archived IPTA data is important in estimating the merger time of the SMBBH, when combined with the FAST-PTA data. This work can serve as a guidance for future PTA observations and multi-messenger studies on SDSSJ1430$+$2303 and similar systems.

  • Iterative time-domain method for resolving multiple gravitational wave sources in Pulsar Timing Array data

    摘要: The sensitivity of ongoing searches for gravitational wave (GW) sources in the ultra-low frequency regime ($10^{-9}$ Hz to $10^{-7}$ Hz) using Pulsar Timing Arrays (PTAs) will continue to increase in the future as more well-timed pulsars are added to the arrays. It is expected that next-generation radio telescopes, namely, the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) and the Square Kilometer Array (SKA), will grow the number of well-timed pulsars to $O(10^3)$. The higher sensitivity will result in greater distance reach for GW sources, uncovering multiple resolvable GW sources in addition to an unresolved population. Data analysis techniques are, therefore, required that can search for and resolve multiple signals present simultaneously in PTA data. The multisource resolution problem in PTA data analysis poses a unique set of challenges such as non-uniformly sampled data, a large number of so-called pulsar phase parameters that arise from the inaccurately measured distances to the pulsars, and poor separation of signals in the Fourier domain due to a small number of cycles in the observed waveforms.

  • Orbital effects on time delay interferometry for TianQin

    摘要: The proposed space-borne laser interferometric gravitational wave (GW) observatory TianQin adopts a geocentric orbit for its nearly equilateral triangular constellation formed by three identical drag-free satellites. The geocentric distance of each satellite is $\approx 1.0 \times 10^{5} ~\mathrm{km}$, which makes the armlengths of the interferometer be $\approx 1.73 \times 10^{5} ~\mathrm{km}$. It is aimed to detect the GWs in $0.1 ~\mathrm{mHz}-1 ~\mathrm{Hz}$. For space-borne detectors, the armlengths are unequal and change continuously which results in that the laser frequency noise is nearly $7-8$ orders of magnitude higher than the secondary noises (such as acceleration noise, optical path noise, etc.). The time delay interferometry (TDI) that synthesizes virtual interferometers from time-delayed one-way frequency measurements has been proposed to suppress the laser frequency noise to the level that is comparable or below the secondary noises. In this work, we evaluate the performance of various data combinations for both first- and second-generation TDI based on the five-year numerically optimized orbits of the TianQin's satellites which exhibit the actual rotating and flexing of the constellation. We find that the time differences of symmetric interference paths of the data combinations are $\sim 10^{-8}$ s for the first-generation TDI and $\sim 10^{-12}$ s for the second-generation TDI, respectively. While the second-generation TDI is guaranteed to be valid for TianQin, the first-generation TDI is possible to be competent for GW signal detection with improved stabilization of the laser frequency noise in the concerned GW frequencies.

  • Parameter-Estimation Biases for Eccentric Supermassive Binary Black Holes in Pulsar Timing Arrays: Biases Caused by Ignored Pulsar Terms

    摘要: The continuous nanohertz gravitational waves (GWs) from individual supermassive binary black holes (SMBBHs) can be encoded in the timing residuals of pulsar timing arrays (PTAs). For each pulsar, the residuals actually contain an Earth term and a pulsar term, but usually only the Earth term is considered as signal and the pulsar term is dropped, which leads to parameter-estimation biases (PEBs) for the SMBBHs, and currently there are no convenient evaluations of the PEBs. In this article, we formulate the PEBs for a SMBBH with an eccentric orbit. In our analyses, the unknown phases of pulsar terms are treated as random variables obeying the uniform distribution $U[0,2\pi)$, due to the fact that pulsar distances are generally poorly measured. Our analytical results are in accordance with the numerical work by Zhu et. al. (2016) at $1.5\sigma$ level, implying that our formulae are effective in estimating magnitudes of the PEBs. Additionally, we find that for two parameters -- Earth term phase $\varphi^E$ and orbital eccentricity $e$, their biases $\Delta \varphi^E$ and $\Delta e/e$ monotonically decrease as $e$ increases, which partly confirms a hypothesis in our previous work Chen & Zhang (2018). Furthermore, we also calculate the PEBs caused by the recently observed common-spectrum process (CSP), finding that if the strain amplitude of the continuous GW is significantly stronger ($3$ times larger, in our cases) than the stochastic GW background, the PEBs from pulsar terms are larger than those from the CSP. Our formulae of the PEBs can be conveniently applied in the future PTA data analyses.

  • Analyses of Laser Propagation Noises for TianQin Gravitational Wave Observatory Based on the Global Magnetosphere MHD Simulations

    摘要: TianQin is a proposed space-borne gravitational wave (GW) observatory composed of three identical satellites orbiting around the geocenter with a radius of $10^5$ km. It aims at detecting GWs in the frequency range of 0.1 mHz -- 1 Hz. The detection of GW relies on the high precision measurement of optical path length at $10^{-12}$~m level. The dispersion of space plasma can lead to the optical path difference (OPD, $\Delta l$) along the propagation of laser beams between any pair of satellites. Here, we study the OPD noises for TianQin. The Space Weather Modeling Framework is used to simulate the interaction between the Earth magnetosphere and solar wind. From the simulations, we extract the magnetic field and plasma parameters on the orbits of TianQin at four relative positions of the satellite constellation in the Earth magnetosphere. We calculate the OPD noise for single link, Michelson combination, and Time-Delay Interferometry (TDI) combinations ($\alpha$ and $X$). For single link and Michelson interferometer, the maxima of $|\Delta l|$ are on the order of 1 pm. For the TDI combinations, these can be suppressed to about 0.004 and 0.008 pm for $\alpha$ and $X$. The OPD noise of the Michelson combination is colored in the concerned frequency range; while the ones for the TDI combinations are approximately white. Furthermore, we calculate the ratio of the equivalent strain of the OPD noise to that of TQ, and find that the OPD noises for the TDI combinations can be neglected in the most sensitive frequency range of TQ.

  • The Gravitational-Wave Physics II: Progress

    摘要: It has been a half-decade since the first direct detection of gravitational waves, which signifies the coming of the era of the gravitational-wave astronomy and gravitational-wave cosmology. The increasing number of the detected gravitational-wave events has revealed the promising capability of constraining various aspects of cosmology, astronomy, and gravity. Due to the limited space in this review article, we will briefly summarize the recent progress over the past five years, but with a special focus on some of our own work for the Key Project ``Physics associated with the gravitational waves'' supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. In particular, (1) we have presented the mechanism of the gravitational-wave production during some physical processes of the early Universe, such as inflation, preheating and phase transition, and the cosmological implications of gravitational-wave measurements; (2) we have put constraints on the neutron star maximum mass according to GW170817 observations; (3) we have developed a numerical relativity algorithm based on the finite element method and a waveform model for the binary black hole coalescence along an eccentric orbit.

  • Search for Continuous Gravitational Wave Signals in Pulsar Timing Residuals: A New Scalable Approach with Diffusive Nested Sampling

    摘要: Detecting continuous nanohertz gravitational waves (GWs) generated by individual close binaries of supermassive black holes (CB-SMBHs) is one of the primary objectives of pulsar timing arrays (PTAs). The detection sensitivity is slated to increase significantly as the number of well-timed millisecond pulsars will increase by more than an order of magnitude with the advent of next-generation radio telescopes. Currently, the Bayesian analysis pipeline using parallel tempering Markov chain Monte Carlo has been applied in multiple studies for CB-SMBH searches, but it may be challenged by the high dimensionality of the parameter space for future large-scale PTAs. One solution is to reduce the dimensionality by maximizing or marginalizing over uninformative parameters semi-analytically, but it is not clear whether this approach can be extended to more complex signal models without making overly simplified assumptions. Recently, the method of diffusive nested (DNest) sampling shown the capability of coping with high dimensionality and multimodality effectively in Bayesian analysis. In this paper, we apply DNest to search for continuous GWs in simulated pulsar timing residuals and find that it performs well in terms of accuracy, robustness, and efficiency for a PTA including $\mathcal{O}(10^2)$ pulsars. DNest also allows a simultaneous search of multiple sources elegantly, which demonstrates its scalability and general applicability. Our results show that it is convenient and also high beneficial to include DNest in current toolboxes of PTA analysis.

  • Symmetry breaking of Pancharatnam-Berry phase using non-axisymmetric meta-atoms

    摘要: The Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phase in metasurfaces obeys the symmetry restriction, according to which the PB phases of two orthogonal circularly polarized waves are the same but with opposite signs. Here, we reveal a general mechanism to break the axisymmetry of meta-atoms in order to break the PB-phase symmetry restriction. As a proof of concept, we designed a novel meta-atom with a QR-code structure and successfully demonstrated circular-polarization multiplexing metasurface holography. This study provides a fundamentally new understanding of the PB phase and opens a path for arbitrary wavefront engineering using asymmetric electromagnetic structures.

  • Realization of all-optical higher-order spatial differentiators based on cascaded operations

    摘要: Cascaded operations play an important role in traditional electronic computing systems for the realization of advanced strategies. Here, we introduce the idea of cascaded operations into all-optical spatial analog computing. The single function of the firstorder operation is difficult to meet the requirements of practical applications in image recognition. The all-optical second-order spatial differentiators are implemented by cascading two first-order differential operation units, and the image edge detection of amplitude and phase objects are demonstrated. Our scheme provides a possible pathway towards the development of compact multifunctional differentiators and advanced optical analog computing networks.

  • 750 GeV Diphoton Excess from Cascade Decay

    摘要: Motivated by the recent 750 GeV diphoton excess observed by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations, we propose a simplified model to explain this excess. Model-independent constraints and predictions on the allowed couplings for generating the observed diphoton excess are studied in detail, and the compatibility between Run 1 and Run 2 data is considered simultaneously. We demonstrate that the possible four photon signal can be used to test this scenario, and also explain the interesting deviation for a diphoton mass of about 1.6 TeV by ATLAS, where the local significance is 2.8 σ. Meanwhile, this scenario also provides us with the dark matter candidates.
