  • Magnetically Driven Relativistic Jet in the High-Redshift Blazar OH~471

分类: 天文学 >> 天体物理学 提交时间: 2024-05-20

摘要: Context : Understanding the mechanisms that launch and shape powerful relativistic jets from supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in high-redshift active galactic nuclei (AGN) is crucial for probing the co-evolution of SMBHs and galaxies over cosmic time. Aims :We study the high-redshift ($z=3.396$) blazar OH~471 to explore the jet launching mechanism in the early Universe. Methods : Using multi-frequency radio monitoring observations and high-resolution Very Long Baseline Interferometry imaging over three decades, we study the milliarcsecond structure and long-term variability of OH~471. Results : Spectral modelling of the radio flux densities reveals a synchrotron self-absorbed spectrum indicating strong magnetic fields within the compact core. By applying the flux freezing approximation, we estimate the magnetic flux carried by the jet and find that it reaches or exceeds theoretical predictions for jets powered by black hole spin energy via the Blandford-Znajek mechanism. This implies that OH~471 was in a magnetically arrested disk (MAD) state where the magnetic flux accumulated near the horizon regulates the accretion flow, allowing efficient extraction of black hole rotational energy. Conclusions : Our study demonstrates the dominance of MAD accretion in powering the prominent radio flares and relativistic jets observed in the radio-loud AGN OH~471 and statistical studies of large samples of high-redshift AGN will shed light on the role of MAD accretion in launching and accelerating the earliest relativistic jets.

  • Combining the CLAUDS & HSC-SSP surveys: U+grizy(+YJHKs) photometry and photometric redshifts for 18M galaxies in the 20 deg2 of the HSC-SSP Deep and ultraDeep fields

分类: 天文学 >> 天文学 提交时间: 2023-02-19

摘要: We present the combination of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CHFT) Large Area $U$-bands Deep Survey (CLAUDS) and the Hyper-Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) data over their four deep fields. We provide photometric catalogs for $u$, $u^*$ (CFHT--MegaCam), $g$, $r$, $i$, $z$, and $y$ (Subaru--HSC) bands over $\sim 20~{\rm deg}^2$, complemented in two fields by data from the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) Deep Extragalactic Observations (VIDEO) survey and the UltraVISTA survey, thus extending the wavelength coverage toward near-infrared with VIRCAM $Y$, $J$, $H$, and $K_s$ observations over $5.5~{\rm deg}^2$. The extraction of the photometry was performed with two different softwares: the HSC pipeline hscPipe and the standard and robust SExtractor software. Photometric redshifts were computed with template-fitting methods using the new Phosphoros code for the hscPipe photometry and the well-known Le Phare code for the SExtractor photometry. The products of these methods were compared with each other in detail. We assessed their quality using the large spectroscopic sample available in those regions, together with photometry and photometric redshifts from COSMOS2020, the latest version of the Cosmic Evolution Survey catalogs. We find that both photometric data sets are in good agreement in $Ugrizy$ down to magnitude$\sim26$, and to magnitude$\sim24.5$ in the $YJHK_s$ bands. We achieve good performance for the photometric redshifts, reaching precisions of $\sigma_{NMAD} \lesssim 0.04$ down to ${m}_i\sim25$, even using only the CLAUDS and HSC bands. At the same magnitude limit, we measured an outlier fraction of $\eta \lesssim 10\%$ when using the $Ugrizy$ bands, and down to $\eta \lesssim 6\%$ when considering near-infrared data. [abridged]

  • Population III X-ray Binaries and their Impact on the Early Universe

分类: 天文学 >> 天文学 提交时间: 2023-02-19

摘要: The first population of X-ray binaries (XRBs) is expected to affect the thermal and ionization states of the gas in the early Universe. Although these X-ray sources are predicted to have important implications for high-redshift observable signals, such as the hydrogen 21-cm signal from cosmic dawn and the cosmic X-ray background, their properties are poorly explored, leaving theoretical models largely uninformed. In this paper we model a population of X-ray binaries arising from zero metallicity stars. We explore how their properties depend on the adopted initial mass function (IMF) of primordial stars, finding a strong effect on their number and X-ray production efficiency. We also present scaling relations between XRBs and their X-ray emission with the local star formation rate, which can be used in sub-grid models in numerical simulations to improve the X-ray feedback prescriptions. Specifically, we find that the uniformity and strength of the X-ray feedback in the intergalactic medium is strongly dependant on the IMF. Bottom-heavy IMFs result in a smoother distribution of XRBs, but have a luminosity orders of magnitude lower than more top-heavy IMFs. Top-heavy IMFs lead to more spatially uneven, albeit strong, X-ray emission. An intermediate IMF has a strong X-ray feedback while sustaining an even emission across the intergalactic medium. These differences in X-ray feedback could be probed in the future with measurements of the cosmic dawn 21-cm line of neutral hydrogen, which offers us a new way of constraining population III IMF.

  • Investigation of the emission radii of kHz QPOs for the accreting millisecond X-Ray pulsars, Atoll and Z sources

分类: 物理学 >> 核物理学 提交时间: 2016-09-14

摘要: We infer the emission positions of twin kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) in neutron star low mass X-ray binaries (NS-LMXBs) based on the Alfven wave oscillation model (AWOM). For most sources, the emission radii of kHz QPOs cluster around a region of 16-19 km with the assumed NS radii of 15 km. Cir X-1 has the larger emission radii of 23-38 km than those of the other sources, which may be ascribed to its large magnetosphere-disk radius or strong NS surface magnetic field. SAX J1808.4-3658 is also a particular source with the relative large emission radii of kHz QPOs of 20 - 23 km, which may be due to its large inferred NS radius of 18 - 19 km. The emission radii of kHz QPOs for all the sources are larger than the NS radii, and the possible explanations of which are presented. The similarity of the emission radii of kHz QPOs (16-19 km) for both the low/high luminosity Atoll/Z sources is found, which indicates that both sources share the similar magnetosphere- disk radii.
