Abstract: Combining scientific modeling, algorithm, development of software, and computational simulation, high performance computing plays a very important role in key scientific discoveries of basic scientific research area and modern engineering technology. Starting from demands of different scientific computing applications toward high performance computer and its development trend, this article analyzed a successful case that scientists from different institutes of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) by working together finished a variety of application packages on Dawning 1000 supercomputer. They achieved some milestones in electronic structure calculation of natural DNA molecule, electronic state theoretical analysis of laser crystal material, and parallel computing of eigenvalue problem. CAS is always in the frontier of domestic scientific computing applications these years. In the condition of higher application level, larger computational scale, and outstanding achievements, we selected several typical traditional scientific computing applications including atmosphere science, life science, high energy physics, computational chemistry, material science and introduced their current status, promotion to application field, and future trend from a point of view of a scientist. Finally, several suggestions on developing China’s further scientific computing have been proposed.

Abstract: The concept of bionics combines biology and engineering technology to provide people with new principles, methods, and ways to improve and create new equipment, promote technological innovation, and solve technical problems in the most flexible, efficient, reliable, and economical way. Although information technology continues to develop, it still faces many challenges in the era of big data and intelligence. With the explosive growth of massive data, the demand of storage, calculation, and analysis, and its energy consumption and efficiency challenges, information technology is urgently needed to find a new development direction. Inspired by biotechnology, it is becoming an international frontier research direction to find information technology innovation scheme from biological structure. As active new research fields, DNA data storage and neural morphological computation as well as related research are representative directions, which have broad future development prospects. Based on the development status and trend of these two research directions, this study attempts to analyze the motivation, trend, and prospect of information technology development inspired by biotechnology. The next two decades will be an important time window for the cross integration of life field and information field. By learning and simulating from life system, and drawing on the new ideas, principles and theories provided by biotechnology research, the information field will produce a number of subversive technologies and applications, and it will affect the entire academic and industrial sessions.

Abstract: Embedded and wearable devices are becoming pervasive, with various sensors collecting user data. With the infrastructure of Internet and cloud computing, it is now much easir to transfer and manage these data. And with deep learning, we can fully mine the value in data. Nevertheless, data needs to be processed with a long workflow, from raw material to final product. Within this workflow, the economic factor would be the most significant force. Therefore, in this article, we discuss the issues in data capitalization. To move data from raw material to final product, we need to consider many aspects, including its pricing, and privacy protection.

Abstract: As modern scientific discoveries heavily depend on the big data management, it is an urgent task to research how to manage scientific big data efficiently. In this paper, we first introduce the application scenes and requirement of scientific big data. Then we summarize four challenges in the management of scientific big data (SPUS): Scale dynamic, Pipeline management, Unified access, and Sharing management. After that, we present the proposed scientific big data management system which consists of four components: computing & storage management, data processing management, data fusion management, and data sharing management. Moreover, we specify the key techniques in the proposed system. At last, we introduce the ongoing Big Scientific Data Management System (BigSDMS) program, which is a national key research and development program.

Abstract: As the soul of research activities, scientific data is not only the inputs for stimulating scientific research innovation, but also the indispensable outcomes during research. Tracing the policies and practices on scientific data management and sharing, main development trends have been identified as “positive and gentle research data policy” as well as “full and delicate scientific data management”. Upon comparison of domestic and international policies and practices, we figure out that the national scientific data policy development is still at its early stage while multidisciplinary practices on research stewardship are still on demand. The open data trend could positively nourish better scientific data management and establishment of research data sharing culture. More involvement of different stakeholders is still in urgent need. Further, gentle and positive sharing trend will still last; public data rights shall continue tradeoff against private data rights fiercely. IT innovation and re-definition of scientific data management could benefit data sharing as well.

Abstract: Packet-level caching is difficult to implement in the traditional caching system. The emergence of Information-centric networking has alleviated this problem. However, the packet-level caching is still facing severe scalability issues. This paper analyzed the issues which limit the implementation of packet-level caching and proposed a packet-level caching optimization approach. This scheme reduces the consumption of fast memory by creating the index with group prefixes instead of the packet prefixes, while the group-level popularity is also used to optimize caching decision. This paper evaluated the performance of the scheme through extensive simulation experiments regarding a wide range of performance metrics. The experimental results indicate the scheme can reduce the fast memory usage and achieve significant improvement in terms of server load reduction ratio, average hop reduction ratio and average cache hit ratio, compared with current packet-level caching schemes.

Abstract: Based on understanding of theory and practice, Handle System will coexist with the Domain Name System for a long time in the future, however, resolution protocols and identifier code rules of two identifier resolution system are incompatibility, leading to a barrier between data space of them. Therefore, it is urgent for us to resolve the connectivity problem of two identifier resolution system currently. By analyzing pros and cons of existing solutions, we found that the separation of protocol data unit and protocol can solve the incompatibility problem of resolution protocol and identifier code rule of two systems. Based on such a separation mechanism, inter-operation mechanism of Handle System and Domain Name System based on the proxy server was developed. Simulation experiments show that compared with traditional client-server ones, the response time of this new mechanism increases a little and is within the acceptable range.

Abstract: The exact approximation of write latency for NWR databases under various consistency levels can serve the building and operating of database clusters, by finding the optimal combination of cluster size and replication factor that minimizes the building and operating cost. Existing benchmarking or queue simulating based approaches can only give incomplete results as they are limited to specific configurations and testbeds. This paper depicted the first close-form analysis of (n, r, k) fork-join queueing process of Cassandra (a typical NWR database) write operations, based on which this paper proposed the first theoretical write latency model for NWR databases. The model is capable of giving more comprehensive latency results. Experiments validated the close-form analysis of (n, r, k) fork-join queues and the write latency model respectively on simulated queues and a Cassandra cluster.

Abstract: Considering the advantages and disadvantages of both deterministic caching strategies and probabilistic caching strategies in Named-Data Networking, this paper proposed a hybrid caching strategy (named HDP) . Based on the idea of region division, the hybrid NDN caching strategy used the popularity-based deterministic caching strategy at the edge of the network, and used the probabilistic caching strategy based on cache benefit and content popularity at the core area. Combining the advantages of both cache strategies, the performance of NDN caching is enhanced. Simulation results show that compared with current NDN methods this strategy is able to increase cache service ratio and hit ratio and reduce content access delay to improve the user experience.
