Subjects: Library Science,Information Science >> Library Science submitted time 2023-08-26 Cooperative journals: 《图书情报工作》

Abstract: [Purpose/significance] By analyzing and summarizing the connotation, application and related findings of affective load theory, the paper aims to provide references to further domestic research design.[Method/process] Through literature research and analysis, this paper traces the background of affective load and states its theoretical connotation. It reviews the relevant empirical studies according to three stages, which are the stage of the germ of theory, the stage of theoretical proposition and the stage of subsequent application. The forming and developing process of the theory is analyzed and the future research directions are pointed out.[Result/conclusion] Affective load theory integrates multidisciplinary ideas of cognitive science, affective neuroscience, affect control theory and affective computing, it systematically examines users' sentiment in the process of informational behavior from the social-biological information technology model. Affective load is a negative emotion, which is a kind of uncertainty mainly resulting from the four negative emotions of irritation, anxiety, frustration and rage with time pressure. This negative emotion reduces the satisfaction of the user information utilization and also affects users' evaluation and acceptance of the information retrieval result. After affective load proposed, it was applied to different contexts such as virtual libraries, social media, daily information behavior.

  • Research on the Factors Affecting Search Failure in Digital Library

Subjects: Library Science,Information Science >> Library Science submitted time 2023-07-26 Cooperative journals: 《图书情报工作》

Abstract: [Purpose/significance] This paper discusses how task type, need for cognition and self-efficacy influence the frequency of failure.[Method/process] Using a cognitive complexity framework, the research designs five search tasks, and recruits 30 participants of Beijing Normal University to conduct takes. It obtains the relevant data by recording the participants searching process.[Result/conclusion] Task type and need for cognition have impact on the task of failure, and self-efficacy has impact on the query of failure. The users are more likely to encounter task failures, when they complete higher cognitive complexity of the tasks. The higher cognitive needs users will encounter smaller number of task failures, and have higher evaluation of the task. Higher self-efficacy users will encounter smaller number of query failures.

  • The Definition and Application of User Affective Factors in the Field of Information Seeking and Retrieval

Subjects: Library Science,Information Science >> Library Science submitted time 2023-07-26 Cooperative journals: 《图书情报工作》

Abstract: [Purpose/significance] This paper aims to comb the definition and application of affective factors by reviewing the studies on affective issues in the field of information seeking and retrieval. [Method/process] From the perspective of emotion, it analyzes affective research in the field of information seeking and retrieval at home and abroad from the perspective of the definition of affective concepts, the types of affective factors, and the representation and application of affective factors based on emotional theories. [Result/conclusion] Affective related references are diverse, roughly including affect and affective factors. The former mainly includes impression, emotion, feelings, affect and so on. The latter is broader and involves non-emotional factors. In general, there is much research on emotional theories and the expression of emotional factors, in which most researchers directly borrow the concept of affect from the field of psychology but seldom distinguish them strictly. Finally, it summarizes affective concepts, the types of affective factors, the measurement and application of affective factors and provides some research directions for the future.

  • Research on Users' Emotions and Impact Factors Based on Facial Expression Recognition in Exploratory Search

Subjects: Library Science,Information Science >> Information Science submitted time 2023-04-01 Cooperative journals: 《图书情报工作》

Abstract: [Purpose/significance] Combined with facial expression recognition technology, this study focuses on the relationship between emotions and related factors in the search process, and explores the relationship among emotions, search interaction behaviors, as well as user experience in the search process, so as to provide references for automatic recognition and prediction of users’ emotional state based on search interaction behaviors, and serve for the optimization of the search interaction process. [Method/process] Through experimental research, 48 subjects were recruited and divided into two groups. They completed three designated tasks with or without time constraints respectively, and their expression data, behavior data and related self-evaluation data were collected. [Result/conclusion] The results show that: in the search process, users’ neutral emotions account for the highest proportion (58.03%), followed by negative emotions (29.88%), and positive emotions account for the least proportion (12.10%). The higher the proportion of users’ non-neutral emotions, the worse the post-search experience, and conversely, the higher the proportion of neutral emotions, the better the users’ post-search experience. The proportion of sadness, disgust, surprise and happiness in the time limited group is significantly higher than that in the non-time limited group; at the same time, the proportion of neutral emotions in the time limited group is significantly lower than that of the non-time limit group. The high task difficulty perception group shows more disgust, anger and less neutral emotions. Non-neutral emotions are more likely to occur in page switching scenarios. The more neutral emotions in the search process, the better the user’s experience after the search, while the proportion of negative emotions and positive emotions is negatively correlated with the experience after the search.

  • Research on the Search Behaviors Oriented to Task Difficulty Perception

Subjects: Library Science,Information Science >> Information Science submitted time 2023-04-01 Cooperative journals: 《图书情报工作》

Abstract: [Purpose/significance] This study uses learning-related search as the background to explore interactive behavior indicators that have a stable and significant impact on users' perception of the task difficulty. [Method/process] This research relied on course teaching to carry out behavior experiments. It took Information Technology Application course students as the research objects, used Morae to record search behavior experiments remotely. A total of 170 valid search behavior records from 39 students have been collected. According to the screen recording data and the task difficulty perception evaluation data, this study analyzed the behavior indicators which show significant differences under different difficulty levels. In addition, this study also combined two experimental data that carried out by the research team in 2016 and 2017 and the findings of existing related research, horizontal comparison was made, so as to summarize the stability of significant differences of behavior indicators under different task difficulty levels. [Result/conclusion] Finally, a stable behavior indicator system with 26 behavior indicators is obtained. The research also describes users' behavior characteristics in difficult tasks from the perspective of exploratory search process and behavior types, and points out the future research directions.
