  • A meta-analysis of molecular spectroscopy databases, and prospects of molecule detection with some future facilities

    摘要: Molecules reside broadly in the interstellar space and can be detected via spectroscopic observations. To date, more than 271 molecular species have been identified in interstellar medium or circumstellar envelopes. Molecular spectroscopic parameters measured in laboratory make the identification of new species and derivation of physical parameters possible. These spectroscopic parameters are systematically collected into databases, two of the most commonly used being the CDMS and JPL databases. While new spectroscopic parameters are continuously measured/calculated and added to those databases, at any point in time it is the existing spectroscopic data that ultimately limits what molecules can possibly be identified in astronomical data. In this work, we conduct a meta-analysis of the CDMS and JPL databases. We show the statistics of transition frequencies and their uncertainties in these two databases, and discuss the line confusion problem under certain physical environments. We then assess the prospects of detecting molecules in common ISM environments using a few facilities that are expected to be conducting spectroscopic observations in the future. Results show that CSST/HSTDM and SKA1-mid have the potential to detect some complex organic molecules, or even amino acids, with reasonable assumptions about ISM environments.

  • The SDSS-V Black Hole Mapper Reverberation Mapping Project: Unusual Broad-Line Variability in a Luminous Quasar

    摘要: We present a high-cadence multi-epoch analysis of dramatic variability of three broad emission lines (MgII, H$\beta$, and H$\alpha$) in the spectra of the luminous quasar ($\lambda L_{\lambda}$(5100\r{A}) = $4.7 \times 10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$) SDSS J141041.25+531849.0 at $z = 0.359$ with 127 spectroscopic epochs over 9 years of monitoring (2013-2022). We observe anti-correlations between the broad emission-line widths and flux in all three emission lines, indicating that all three broad emission lines "breathe" in response to stochastic continuum variations. We also observe dramatic radial velocity shifts in all three broad emission lines, ranging from $\Delta{v}$ $\sim$400 km s$^{-1}$ to $\sim$800 km s$^{-1}$, that vary over the course of the monitoring period. Our preferred explanation for the broad-line variability is complex kinematics in the broad-line region gas. We suggest a model for the broad-line variability that includes a combination of gas inflow with a radial gradient, an azimuthal asymmetry (e.g., a hot spot), superimposed on the stochastic flux-driven changes to the optimal emission region ("line breathing"). Similar instances of line-profile variability due to complex gas kinematics around quasars are likely to represent an important source of false positives in radial velocity searches for binary black holes, which typically lack the kind of high-cadence data we analyze here. The long-duration, wide-field, and many-epoch spectroscopic monitoring of SDSS-V BHM-RM provides an excellent opportunity for identifying and characterizing broad emission-line variability, and the inferred nature of the inner gas environment, of luminous quasars.

  • A Close Quasar Pair in a Disk-Disk Galaxy Merger at z = 2.17

    摘要: Most local massive galaxies, if not all, are believed to harbor a supermassive black hole (SMBH) at the center. Galaxy mergers have long been thought to drive strong gas inflows and accretion onto one or both central SMBH, triggering single or dual quasars as a natural stage of the hierarchical galaxy and SMBH evolution. While many dual active galactic nuclei -- the low-luminosity counterparts of quasars -- have been observed at low redshift, no unambiguous dual quasar is known at cosmic noon (z>~2) when both quasar activity and global star formation density peaked. While a handful of dual quasar candidates were known at z>1, competing explanations remained. Here we report multi-wavelength observations of SDSS J0749+2255 as the first kpc-scale dual quasar confirmed to be hosted by a galaxy merger at cosmic noon. Hubble Space Telescope NIR imaging reveals extended host galaxies underlying the compact double nuclei (separated by 0.46" or 3.8 kpc) and tidal features as evidence for galactic interactions. We also present new multi-wavelength observations, all lending support to the dual quasar hypothesis. Unlike the low-redshift low-luminosity counterparts, the high-redshift dual quasar is hosted by two massive compact disk-dominated galaxies, which may be critical for efficient gas fueling onto the SMBHs in the early-stage merger. The apparent lack of stellar bulges and that SDSS J0749+2255 already follows the local SMBH mass-host stellar mass relation are at odds with the canonical SMBH-host co-evolution picture and suggest that at least some SMBHs may have formed before their host stellar bulges. While still at kpc-scale separations where the host-galaxy gravitational potential dominates, the SMBHs may evolve into a gravitationally bound binary system in ~0.22 Gyr. The merger products at low redshift are expected to be gravitational wave sources for pulsar-timing arrays (abridged).

  • Numerical Discreteness Errors in Multi-Species Cosmological N-body Simulations

    摘要: We present a detailed analysis of numerical discreteness errors in two-species, gravity-only, cosmological simulations using the density power spectrum as a diagnostic probe. In a simple setup where both species are initialized with the same total matter transfer function, biased growth of power forms on small scales when the solver force resolution is finer than the mean interparticle separation. The artificial bias is more severe when individual density and velocity transfer functions are applied. In particular, significant large-scale offsets in power are measured between simulations with conventional offset grid initial conditions when compared against converged high-resolution results where the force resolution scale is matched to the interparticle separation. These offsets persist even when the cosmology is chosen so that the two particle species have the same mass, indicating that the error is sourced from discreteness in the total matter field as opposed to unequal particle mass. We further investigate two mitigation strategies to address discreteness errors: the frozen potential method and softened interspecies short-range forces. The former evolves particles under the approximately "frozen" total matter potential in linear theory at early times, while the latter filters cross-species gravitational interactions on small scales in low density regions. By modeling closer to the continuum limit, both mitigation strategies demonstrate considerable reductions in large-scale power spectrum offsets.

  • Dwarf AGNs from Variability for the Origins of Seeds (DAVOS): Optical Variability of Broad-line Dwarf AGNs from the Zwicky Transient Facility

    摘要: We study the optical variability of a sample of candidate low-mass (dwarf ang Seyfert) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) using Zwicky Transient Facility g-band light curves. Our sample is compiled from broad-line AGNs in dwarf galaxies reported in the literature with single-epoch virial black hole (BH) masses in the range $M_{\rm{BH}} \sim 10^{4}$--$10^{8}\ M_{\odot}$. We measure the characteristic ``damping'' timescale of the optical variability $\tau_{\rm{DRW}}$, beyond which the power spectral density flattens, of a final sample of 79 candidate low-mass AGNs with high-quality light curves. Our results provide further confirmation of the $M_{\rm{BH}} - \tau_{\rm{DRW}}$ relation from Burke et al. 2022 within $1\sigma$ agreement, adding 78 new low-mass AGNs to the relation. The agreement suggests that the virial BH mass estimates for these AGNs are generally reasonable. We expect that the optical light curve of an accreting intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) to vary with a rest-frame damping timescale of $\sim$ tens of hours, which could enable detection and direct mass estimation of accreting IMBHs in wide-field time-domain imaging surveys with sufficient cadence like with the Vera C. Rubin Observatory.

  • Rubin-Euclid Derived Data Products: Initial Recommendations

    摘要: This report is the result of a joint discussion between the Rubin and Euclid scientific communities. The work presented in this report was focused on designing and recommending an initial set of Derived Data products (DDPs) that could realize the science goals enabled by joint processing. All interested Rubin and Euclid data rights holders were invited to contribute via an online discussion forum and a series of virtual meetings. Strong interest in enhancing science with joint DDPs emerged from across a wide range of astrophysical domains: Solar System, the Galaxy, the Local Volume, from the nearby to the primaeval Universe, and cosmology.

  • Statistics of Galactic-Scale Quasar Pairs at Cosmic Noon

    摘要: The statistics of galactic-scale quasar pairs can elucidate our understanding of the dynamical evolution of supermassive black hole (SMBH) pairs, the duty cycles of quasar activity in mergers, or even the nature of dark matter, but have been challenging to measure at cosmic noon, the prime epoch of massive galaxy and SMBH formation.   • Very Large Array imaging rules out precessing radio jets in three DES$-$SDSS-selected candidate periodic quasars

    摘要: Periodic quasars have been suggested as candidates for hosting binary supermassive black holes (SMBHs), although alternative scenarios remain possible to explain the optical light curve periodicity. To test the alternative hypothesis of precessing radio jet, we present deep 6 GHz radio imaging conducted with NSF's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) in its C configuration for the three candidate periodic quasars, DES J024703.24$-$010032.0, DES J024944.66$-$000036.8, and DES J025214.67$-$002813.7. Our targets were selected based on their optical variability using 20-yr long multi-color light curves from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The new VLA observations show that all three periodic quasars are radio-quiet with the radio loudness parameters measured to be $R\equiv f_{6\,{\rm cm}}/f_{{\rm 2500}}$ of $\lesssim$1.0$-$1.5 and the $k$-corrected luminosities $\nu L_\nu$[6 GHz] of $\lesssim$5$-$21 $\times$ 10$^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$. They are in stark contrast to previously known periodic quasars proposed as binary SMBH candidates such as the blazar OJ 287 and PG1302$-$102. Our results rule out optical emission contributed from precessing radio jets as the origin of the optical periodicity in the three DES$-$SDSS-selected candidate periodic quasars. Future continued optical monitoring and complementary multi-wavelength observations are still needed to further test the binary SMBH hypothesis as well as other competing scenarios to explain the optical periodicity.

  • A Transient "Changing-look'' Active Galactic Nucleus Resolved on Month Timescales from First-year Sloan Digital Sky Survey V Data

    摘要: We report the discovery of a new ``changing-look'' active galactic nucleus (CLAGN) event, in the quasar SDSS J162829.17+432948.5 at z=0.2603, identified through repeat spectroscopy from the fifth Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-V). Optical photometry taken during 2020--2021 shows a dramatic dimming of ${\Delta}$g${\approx}$1 mag, followed by a rapid recovery on a timescale of several months, with the ${\lesssim}$2 month period of rebrightening captured in new SDSS-V and Las Cumbres Observatory spectroscopy. This is one of the fastest CLAGN transitions observed to date. Archival observations suggest that the object experienced a much more gradual dimming over the period of 2011--2013. Our spectroscopy shows that the photometric changes were accompanied by dramatic variations in the quasar-like continuum and broad-line emission. The excellent agreement between the pre- and postdip photometric and spectroscopic appearances of the source, as well as the fact that the dimmest spectra can be reproduced by applying a single extinction law to the brighter spectral states, favor a variable line-of-sight obscuration as the driver of the observed transitions. Such an interpretation faces several theoretical challenges, and thus an alternative accretion-driven scenario cannot be excluded. The recent events observed in this quasar highlight the importance of spectroscopic monitoring of large active galactic nucleus samples on weeks-to-months timescales, which the SDSS-V is designed to achieve.

  • NOEMA Detection of Circumnuclear Molecular Gas in X-ray Weak Dual Active Galactic Nuclei: No Evidence for Heavy Obscuration

    摘要: Dual active galactic nuclei (AGN), which are the manifestation of two actively accreting supermassive black holes (SMBHs) hosted by a pair of merging galaxies, are a unique laboratory for studying the physics of SMBH feeding and feedback during an indispensable stage of galaxy evolution. In this work, we present NOEMA CO(2-1) observations of seven kpc-scale dual-AGN candidates drawn from a recent Chandra survey of low-redshift, optically classified AGN pairs. These systems are selected because they show unexpectedly low 2-10 keV X-ray luminosities for their small physical separations signifying an intermediate-to-late stage of merger. Circumnuclear molecular gas traced by the CO(2-1) emission is significantly detected in 6 of the 7 pairs and 10 of the 14 nuclei, with an estimated mass ranging between $(0.2 - 21) \times10^9\rm~M_{\odot}$. The primary nuclei, i.e., the ones with the higher stellar velocity dispersion, tend to have a higher molecular gas mass than the secondary. Most CO-detected nuclei show a compact morphology, with a velocity field consistent with a kpc-scale rotating structure. The inferred hydrogen column densities range between $5\times10^{21} - 2\times10^{23}\rm~cm^{-2}$, but mostly at a few times $10^{22}\rm~cm^{-2}$, in broad agreement with those derived from X-ray spectral analysis. Together with the relatively weak mid-infrared emission, the moderate column density argues against the prevalence of heavily obscured, intrinsically luminous AGNs in these seven systems, but favors a feedback scenario in which AGN activity triggered by a recent pericentric passage of the galaxy pair can expel circumnuclear gas and suppress further SMBH accretion.

  • A hidden population of high-redshift double quasars unveiled by astrometry

    摘要: Galaxy mergers occur frequently in the early universe and bring multiple supermassive black holes (SMBHs) into the nucleus, where they may eventually coalesce. Identifying post-merger-scale (i.e., 2, but critical to constraining the progenitors of SMBH mergers. The redshift z~2 also marks the epoch of peak activity of luminous quasars, hence probing this spatial regime at high redshift is of particular significance in understanding the evolution of quasars. However, given stringent resolution requirements, there is currently no confirmed 2. Here we report two sub-arcsec double quasars at z>2 discovered from a targeted search with a novel astrometric technique, demonstrating a high success rate (~50%) in this systematic approach. These high-redshift double quasars could be the long-sought kpc-scale dual SMBHs, or sub-arcsec gravitationally-lensed quasar images. One of these double quasars (at z=2.95) was spatially resolved with optical spectroscopy, and slightly favors the scenario of a physical quasar pair with a projected separation of 3.5 kpc (0.46"). Follow-up observations of double quasars discovered by this targeted approach will be able to provide the first observational constraints on kpc-scale dual SMBHs at z>2.

  • AGNet: Weighing Black Holes with Deep Learning

    摘要: Supermassive black holes (SMBHs) are ubiquitously found at the centers of most massive galaxies. Measuring SMBH mass is important for understanding the origin and evolution of SMBHs. However, traditional methods require spectroscopic data which is expensive to gather. We present an algorithm that weighs SMBHs using quasar light time series, circumventing the need for expensive spectra. We train, validate, and test neural networks that directly learn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82 light curves for a sample of $38,939$ spectroscopically confirmed quasars to map out the nonlinear encoding between SMBH mass and multi-color optical light curves. We find a 1$\sigma$ scatter of 0.37 dex between the predicted SMBH mass and the fiducial virial mass estimate based on SDSS single-epoch spectra, which is comparable to the systematic uncertainty in the virial mass estimate. Our results have direct implications for more efficient applications with future observations from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory.   • Very Large Array Multi-band Radio Imaging of the Triple AGN Candidate SDSS J0849+1114

    摘要: Kpc-scale triple active galactic nuclei (AGNs), potential precursors of gravitationally-bound triple massive black holes (MBHs), are rarely seen objects and believed to play an important role in the evolution of MBHs and their host galaxies. In this work we present a multi-band (3.0, 6.0 10.0, and 15.0 GHz), high-resolution radio imaging of the triple AGN candidate, SDSS J0849+1114, using the Very Large Array. Two of the three nuclei (A and C) are detected at 3.0, 6.0, and 15 GHz for the first time, both exhibiting a steep spectrum over 3--15 GHz (with a spectral index $-0.90 \pm 0.05$ and $-1.03 \pm 0.04$) consistent with a synchrotron origin. Nucleus A, the strongest nucleus among the three, shows a double-sided jet, with the jet orientation changing by $\sim20^{\circ}$ between its inner 1" and the outer 5.5" (8.1 kpc) components, which may be explained as the MBH's angular momentum having been altered by merger-enhanced accretion. Nucleus C also shows a two-sided jet, with the western jet inflating into a radio lobe with an extent of 1.5" (2.2 kpc). The internal energy of the radio lobe is estimated to be $\rm 5.0 \times 10^{55}$ erg, for an equipartition magnetic field strength of $\rm \sim 160\ \mu G$. No significant radio emission is detected at all four frequencies for nucleus B, yielding an upper limit of 15, 15, 15, and 18 $\rm \mu Jy\ beam^{-1}$ at 3.0, 6.0, 10.0, and 15.0 GHz, based on which we constrain the star formation rate in nucleus B to be $\lesssim 0.4~\rm M_{\odot}~yr^{-1}$.

  • The Eighteenth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys: Targeting and First Spectra from SDSS-V

    摘要: The eighteenth data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys (SDSS) is the first one for SDSS-V, the fifth generation of the survey. SDSS-V comprises three primary scientific programs, or "Mappers": Milky Way Mapper (MWM), Black Hole Mapper (BHM), and Local Volume Mapper (LVM). This data release contains extensive targeting information for the two multi-object spectroscopy programs (MWM and BHM), including input catalogs and selection functions for their numerous scientific objectives. We describe the production of the targeting databases and their calibration- and scientifically-focused components. DR18 also includes ~25,000 new SDSS spectra and supplemental information for X-ray sources identified by eROSITA in its eFEDS field. We present updates to some of the SDSS software pipelines and preview changes anticipated for DR19. We also describe three value-added catalogs (VACs) based on SDSS-IV data that have been published since DR17, and one VAC based on the SDSS-V data in the eFEDS field.

  • High-performance chiral all-optical logic gate based on topological edge states of valley photonic crystal

    摘要: For all-optical communication and information processing, it is necessary to develop all-optical logic gates based on photonic structures that can directly perform logic operations. All-optical logic gates have been demonstrated based on conventional waveguides and interferometry, as well as photonic crystal structures. Nonetheless, any defects in those structures will introduce high scattering loss, which compromises the fidelity and contrast ratio of the information process. Based on the spin-valley locking effect that can achieve defect-immune unidirectional transmission of topological edge states in valley photonic crystals (VPCs), we propose a high-performance all-optical logic OR gate based on a VPC structure. By tuning the working bandwidth of the two input channels, we prevent interference between the two channels to achieve a stable and high-fidelity output. The transmittance of both channels is higher than 0.8, and a high contrast ratio of 28.8 dB is achieved. Moreover, the chirality of the logic gate originated from the spin-valley locking effect allows using different circularly polarized light as inputs, representing "1" or "0", which is highly desired in quantum computing. The device's footprint is small, allowing high-density on-chip integration. In addition, this design can be experimentally fabricated using current nanofabrication techniques and will have potential applications in optical communication, information processing, and quantum computing.

  • Fast generation of arbitrary optical focus array

    摘要: We report a novel method to generate arbitrary optical focus arrays (OFAs). Our approach rapidly produces computer-generated holograms (CGHs) to precisely control the positions and the intensities of the foci. This is achieved by replacing the fast Fourier transform (FFT) operation in the conventional iterative Fourier-transform algorithm (IFTA) with a linear algebra one, identifying/removing zero elements from the matrices, and employing a generalized weighting strategy. On the premise of accelerating the calculation speed by >70 times, we demonstrate OFA with 99% intensity precision in the experiment. Our method proves effective and is applicable for the systems in which real-time OFA generation is essential.

  • Design of wavelength division multiplexing devices based on tunable edge states of valley photonic crystals

    摘要: Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) devices are key elements of Photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Conventional WDM devices based on silicon waveguides and photonic crystals have limited transmittance due to high loss introduced by the strong backward scattering from defects. In addition, it is challenging to reduce the footprint of those devices. Here we theoretically demonstrate a WDM device in the telecommunication range based on all-dielectric silicon topological valley photonic crystal (VPC) structures. We tune its effective refractive index by tuning the physical parameters of the lattice in the silicon substrate, which can continuously tune the working wavelength range of the topological edge states, which allows designing WDM devices with different channels. The WDM device has two channels (1470 nm-1523 nm and 1548 nm-1609 nm), with contrast ratios of 22.4 dB and 24.9 dB, respectively. The principle of manipulating the working bandwidth of the topological edge states can be generally applied in designing different integratable photonic devices, thus it will find broad applications.

    摘要: The High Energy cosmic Radiation Detection (HERD) facility is a space mission designed for detecting cosmic ray (CR) electrons, γ-rays up to tens of TeV and CR nuclei from proton to iron up to several PeV. The main instrument of HERD is a 3-D imaging calorimeter (CALO) composed of nearly ten thousand cubic LYSO crystals. A large dynamic range of single HERD CALO Cell (HCC) is necessary to achieve HERD’s PeV observation objectives, which means that the response of HCC should maintain a good linearity from minimum ionizing particle (MIP) calibration to PeV shower maximum. In order to study the linearity of HCC over such a large energy range, a beam test has been implemented at the E2 and E3 beam lines of BEPC. High intensity pulsed electron beam provided by E2 line are used for producing high energy density within HCC; π+/proton provided by E3 line are used for HCC calibration. The results show that no saturation effect occurs and the linearity of HCC is better than 10% from 30 MeV (1 MIP) to 1.1×103 TeV (energy density is 93 TeV/cm3), which can meet the requirement mentioned above.
