  • Quaternary Cryosphere—Study on Global Change in Long Terms

Subjects: Other Disciplines >> Synthetic discipline submitted time 2023-03-28 Cooperative journals: 《中国科学院院刊》

Abstract: The Quaternary is marked by the Great Ice Age. The basic characteristics of this great ice age are the alternating of glacialinterglacial period in orbital scale and changes of stadial-interstadial in suborbital scale. Present is a relatively warm interglacial period, with glaciers covering only 10% of the land area. At the glacial maximum, glaciers covered about 30% of the global land area, permafrost spread, climate was dry with prevalence of dust, sea level reduced 130–150 m, vegetation contracted to low latitudes more than 10°, and the vertical band spectrum moved down more than 1 000 m. The astronomic theory of ice ages has successfully explained the glacial-interglacial cycles, however, there are still a lot of problems to need studies in detail. Quaternary is also the period of ancient human development. Ancient human was born in East Africa and spread to Eurasia only on a limited scale about 2 Ma ago. The spread on a large scale started during the last interglacial and spread to America and Australia by means of land bridges during Last Glaciation Maximum (LGM). After the younger Dryas, the climate became warm and the human entered the Neolithic Period and gradually transited to the agricultural society. After the Industrial Revolution, human development has been profoundly affecting the natural process of the Earth, leading to global warming, heralding the arrival of an “Anthropocene”.

  • The relationship between gratitude and social well-being: Evidence from a longitudinal study and a daily diary investigation

Subjects: Psychology >> Social Psychology submitted time 2023-01-28

Abstract: The positive psychological construct of gratitude is crucial for health and well-being. Previous studies have shown a significant positive correlation between gratitude and social well-being. However, no studies have examined this potentially reciprocal relationship from a longitudinal perspective. According to the broaden-and-build theory and gratitude amplification theory, we hypothesized that gratitude has a direct effect on social well-being. In addition, based on the personality and social relationships model and self-determination theory, we proposed that social well-being is an antecedent to gratitude. In summary, this research combines a longitudinal study and a daily diary investigation to systematically explore the causal mechanism between gratitude and social well-being.  Study 1 employs a two-wave cross-lagged design to explore the long-term relationship between trait gratitude and social well-being. The sample comprised 563 undergraduate students, who all participated online. Pursuant to the study purpose, participants were asked to complete the gratitude and social well-being scales twice, separated by a seven-month interval. The cross-lagged path analysis suggested reciprocal effects between trait gratitude and social well-being. To reduce recall bias and explore the short-term association between gratitude and social well-being, Study 2 employs a daily diary method. A total of 274 young adults completed daily gratitude and social well-being measures for 21 consecutive days. In Study 1, trait gratitude at T1 significantly positively predicted social well-being at T2, while social well-being at T1 also significantly predicted trait gratitude at T2. These effects remained significant after controlling for age and gender. Consistent with Study 1, Study 2 also revealed a reciprocal relationship: state gratitude on one day positively predicted social well-being the next day, while social well-being on one day also positively predicted state gratitude the next day. Moreover, these relationships were stable after controlling for time trend. Overall, the results of Study 1 and Study 2 support the hypotheses by showing reciprocal predictive effects between gratitude and social well-being. In summary, we predicted that experiencing gratitude would lead to higher social well-being, which would, in turn, result in higher gratitude, activating an upward spiral. This work deepens understanding of the interaction between gratitude and social well-being, paving the way for future intervention research to help increase both.

  • Evaluation of external HMI in autonomous vehicles based on pedestrian road crossing decision-making model

Subjects: Psychology >> Industrial Psychology submitted time 2021-05-24

Abstract: For autonomous vehicles driven in road context with pedestrians, it is essential to ensure safe and efficient interaction with pedestrians. To that end, autonomous vehicles of high level (e.g. above L3) are usually equipped with an external human-machine interface (eHMIs) to communicate with pedestrians. An overview of current studies shows that the current external eHMIs mainly conveyed vehicle status (whether it is in auto mode), intentions, and road-crossing advice to pedestrians in visual modalities such as text, icon, projection, etc. These eHMIs have been evaluated to determine their effect on pedestrian’s crossing intention, speed, and accuracy in real as well as simulated contexts. However, a user-centered design of eHMIs should systematically support pedestrian information processing needs during road crossing decision making. To fill the gap, a conceptual model was proposed to capture pedestrian’s dynamic road crossing decision-making when interacting with autonomous vehicles. The model integrated pedestrian’s road crossing decision-making process and the situation awareness theory. Based on the model, eHMIs should promote pedestrian’s perception, comprehension, and the projection of the vehicle’s intention. To support the perception of the displayed information, eHMIs should adopt multiple modalities’ interfaces to convey the vehicle’s information, and consider presenting information on media beyond the vehicle, such as the street infrastructure and the electronics of pedestrians. To support comprehension of the displayed information, pedestrians need to be trained. More importantly, the information should be carefully designed with an appropriate massage perspective and standardized formats. In the projection phase, vehicle motion information as a traditional yet intuitive way to convey the vehicle’s future intentions can be strengthened and integrated with eHMI to assist faster and more accurate decision-making. Besides the simple one-to-one context of interaction, future research should also explore how the design of the interface impacts pedestrians in the context of multi-pedestrian and multi-vehicle contexts. Theoretically, exploration is also needed on how the eHMI supports the formation and update of their situation awareness and how it affects mental models in human-vehicle interactions.

  • Effects of Meta-Stereotype Threat on Aggressive Behavior among Migrant Children and the Mediating Effect of Frustration

Subjects: Psychology >> Developmental Psychology Subjects: Psychology >> Social Psychology submitted time 2018-12-16

Abstract: Meta-stereotype threat refers to an unbalanced cognition state when a person’s negative beliefs regarding the stereotype that out-group members hold about their own group are activated. Previous research has shown that the activation of negative meta-stereotype contributes to social behavior, but the mechanism of the meta-stereotype threat effects on aggressive behavior remains unclear. Moreover, compared with dominant groups, migrant children are more susceptible to meta-stereotype. However, the influence of negative meta-stereotype on migrant children’s aggressive behavior has not been thoroughly investigated. Therefore, the current study aimed to explore the meta-stereotype threat effects on aggressive behavior among migrant children, and the mediated role of the frustration between meta-stereotype threat and aggressive behavior. Finally, we attempted to use imagined intergroup contact to intervene frustration in order to relieve the negative effects of meta-stereotype threat. As an exploratory study, 60 migrant children participated in study 1. Participants were instructed to write adjectives to arouse negative meta-stereotype or not according to different instructions. Then, participants were assigned to complete the distribution of balsam pear juice which represented aggressive behavior against local children. The study 2 was improved on the basis of study 1. This study was organized into a 2 (meta-stereotype threat condition: activate meta-stereotype threat or not) ×2(attacked aim: local children and migrant children) mixed design. A total of 60 migrant children participated in study 2. After writing adjectives based on different instructions, participants were assigned to complete a test to make sure meta-stereotype was evoked. Then the frustration questionnaire and the balsam pear juice task against local children and migrant children were completed and measured. Study 3 was organized into a 3(type of imagination: imagined intergroup contact, imagined scenery and non-imagination) ×2(attacked aim: local children and migrant children) mixed design. Firstly, 95 migrant children were asked to arouse meta-stereotype and complete the meta-stereotype test. Next, the non-imagination group completed frustration questionnaire and the balsam pear juice task directly, while the migrant children of imagined intergroup contact group imagined the positive interaction with local children, and imagined scenery group imagined the outdoor scenery. After that, the two groups completed frustration questionnaire and the balsam pear juice task. T test, ANOVA and mediation analysis were used to analyze all data. The following results were observed: (1) The frustration and aggressive behavior under the meta-stereotype threat (MST) condition was higher than the non-MST condition. (2) The relationship between the meta-stereotype threat and the aggressive behavior against local children was partly mediated by the frustration. (3) The mediated role of frustration was further supported by the results of study 3. Imagined intergroup contact could reduce the aggressive behavior against local children by controlling frustration. In sum, the results proved that the effects of meta-stereotype threat on frustration among migrant children contributed to the explanation of the increase of aggressive behavior against local children. • On derivations of MV-algebras

Abstract: In this paper, we investigate related properties of some particular derivations and give some characterizations of additive derivations in MV-algebras. Then, we obtainthat the #12;xed point set of additive derivations is still an MV-algebra. Also,we study Boolean additive derivations and their adjoint derivations. In particular, we get that the #12;xed point set of Boolean addition derivations and that of their adjoint derivations are isomorphism. Moreover, we prove that every MV-algebra is isomorphic to the direct product of the #12;xed point set of Boolean additive derivations and that of their adjoint derivations. Finally, we show that the structure of a Boolean algebra is completely determined by its set of all Boolean additive (implicative) derivations.

  • Monadic NM-algebras

Subjects: Mathematics >> Mathematics (General) submitted time 2017-03-29

Abstract:The main goal of this paper is to investigate (strong) monadic NM-algebras and to prove the (chain) completeness of the monadic NM-logic. In this paper, we introduce monadic NM-algebras: a variety of NM-algebras equipped with universal quanti#12;ers. Also, we study some properties of them and obtain some conditions under which a monadic NM-algebra becomes a monadic Boolean algebra. Besides, we show that the variety of NM-algebras are the equivalent algebraic semantics of the monadic fragment of NM predicate logic. Furthermore, we discuss relations between monadic NM-algebras and some related structures, likeness modal NMalgebras and rough approximation spaces. In addition, we introduce and investigate monadic #12;lters in monadic NM-algebras. In particular, by using monadic #12;lters on monadic NM-algebras, we characterize two kinds of monadic NM-algebras, which are simple and subdirectly irreducible. Moreover, we focus on a monadic analogous of representation theorem for NM-algebras and obtain that every strong monadic NM-algebra can be represented as subalgebras of products of linearly ordered ones. Then, we present monadic NM-logic, a system of many-valued logic capturing the tautologies of the predicate logics of nilpotent minimum t-norm and it's residua. As an application of (strong) monadic NM-algebras, we prove the (chain)completeness of monadic NM-logic. Our results constitute a crucial #12;rst step for providing a solid algebraic foundation for the one element fragment of NM predicate logic.
