  • The Jiao Tong University Spectroscopic Telescope Project

    摘要:The Jiao Tong University Spectroscopic Telescope (JUST) is a 4.4-meter f/6.0 segmented-mirror telescope dedicated to spectroscopic observations. The JUST primary mirror is composed of 18 hexagonal segments, each with a diameter of 1.1 m. JUST provides two Nasmyth platforms for placing science instruments. One Nasmyth focus fits a field of view of 10 ′ and the other has an extended field of view of 1.2° with correction optics. A tertiary mirror is used to switch between the two Nasmyth foci. JUST will be installed at a site at Lenghu in Qinghai Province, China, and will conduct spectroscopic observations with three types of instruments to explore the dark universe, trace the dynamic universe, and search for exoplanets: (1) a multi-fiber (2000 fibers) medium-resolution spectrometer (R=4 000−5 000) to spectroscopically map galaxies and large-scale structure; (2) an integral field unit (IFU) array of 500 optical fibers and/or a long-slit spectrograph dedicated to fast follow-ups of transient sources for multi-messenger astronomy; (3) a high-resolution spectrometer (R~100 000) designed to identify Jupiter analogs and Earth-like planets, with the capability to characterize the atmospheres of hot exoplanets.

  • In-orbit performance of LE onboard Insight-HXMT in the first 5 years

    摘要: Purpose: The Low-Energy X-ray telescope (LE) is a main instrument of the Insight-HXMT mission and consists of 96 Swept Charge Devices (SCD) covering the 1-10 keV energy band. The energy gain and resolution are continuously calibrated by analysing Cassiopeia A (Cas A) and blank sky data, while the effective areas are also calibrated with the observations of the Crab Nebula. In this paper, we present the evolution of the in-orbit performances of LE in the first 5 years since launch. Methods: The Insight-HXMT Data Analysis Software package (HXMTDAS) is utilized to extract the spectra of Cas A, blank sky, and Crab Nebula using different Good Time Interval (GTI) selections. We fit a model with a power-law continuum and several Gaussian lines to different ranges of Cas A and blank sky spectra to get peak energies of their lines through xspec. After updating the energy gain calibration in CALibration DataBase (CALDB), we rerun the Cas A data to obtain the energy resolution. An empirical function is used to modify the simulated effective areas so that the background-subtracted spectrum of the Crab Nebula can best match the standard model of the Crab Nebula. Results: The energy gain, resolution, and effective areas are calibrated every month. The corresponding calibration results are duly updated in CALDB, which can be downloaded and used for the analysis of Insight-HXMT data. Simultaneous observations with NuSTAR and NICER can also be used to verify our derived results. Conclusion: LE is a well calibrated X-ray telescope working in 1-10 keV band. The uncertainty of LE gain is less than 20 eV in 2-9 keV band and the uncertainty of LE resolution is less than 15eV. The systematic errors of LE, compared to the model of the Crab Nebula, are lower than 1.5% in 1-10 keV.

  • ET White Paper: To Find the First Earth 2.0

    摘要: We propose to develop a wide-field and ultra-high-precision photometric survey mission, temporarily named "Earth 2.0 (ET)". This mission is designed to measure, for the first time, the occurrence rate and the orbital distributions of Earth-sized planets. ET consists of seven 30cm telescopes, to be launched to the Earth-Sun's L2 point. Six of these are transit telescopes with a field of view of 500 square degrees. Staring in the direction that encompasses the original Kepler field for four continuous years, this monitoring will return tens of thousands of transiting planets, including the elusive Earth twins orbiting solar-type stars. The seventh telescope is a 30cm microlensing telescope that will monitor an area of 4 square degrees toward the galactic bulge. This, combined with simultaneous ground-based KMTNet observations, will measure masses for hundreds of long-period and free-floating planets. Together, the transit and the microlensing telescopes will revolutionize our understandings of terrestrial planets across a large swath of orbital distances and free space. In addition, the survey data will also facilitate studies in the fields of asteroseismology, Galactic archeology, time-domain sciences, and black holes in binaries.

  • Misaligned orientations of 4f optical neural network for image classification accuracy on various datasets

    摘要: In recent years, the optical 4f system has drawn much attention in building high-speed and ultra-low-power optical neural networks (ONNs). Most optical systems suffer from the misalignment of the optical devices during installment. The performance of ONN based on the optical 4f system (4f-ONN) is considered sensitive to the misalignment in the optical path introduced. In order to comprehensively investigate the influence caused by the misalignment, we proposed a method for estimating the performance of a 4f-ONN in response to various misalignment in the context of the image classification task.The misalignment in numerical simulation is estimated by manipulating the optical intensity distributions in the fourth focus plane in the 4f system. Followed by a series of physical experiments to validate the simulation results. Using our method to test the impact of misalignment of 4f system on the classification accuracy of two popular image classification datasets, MNIST and Quickdraw16. On both datasets, we found that the performances of 4f-ONN generally degraded dramatically as the positioning error increased. Different positioning error tolerance in the misalignment orientations was observed over the two datasets. Classification performance could be preserved by positioning errors up to 200 microns in a specific direction.

  • The third- and fourth-order orbital angular momentum multiplexed amplification with ultra-low differential mode gain

    摘要: In this Letter, a ring-core erbium-doped fiber (RC-EDF), with two-layer erbium-doped structure, supporting up to the fourth-order orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode is designed and fabricated for OAM mode multiplexed amplification. Using the RC-EDF, the third- and fourth-order OAM modes amplification with ultra-low differential mode gain (DMG) is demonstrated by observing both the modal intensity and phase distribution and measuring the modal gain under the fundamental mode core-pumping. The measured average gain of four modes (l=+3, -3, +4, -4) multiplexed amplification is higher than 19dB cover the C-band and the DMG is less than 1dB. Additionally, the gain of two conjugate OAM modes are almost the same under different pump power no matter they are amplified simultaneously or separately.

  • Dipole blockade without dipole-dipole interaction

    摘要: The dipole blockade phenomenon is a direct consequence of strong dipole-dipole interaction, where only single atom can be excited because the doubly excited state is shifted out of resonance. The corresponding two-body entanglement with non-zero concurrence induced by the dipole blockade effect is an important resource for quantum information processing. Here, we propose a novel physical mechanism for realizing dipole blockade without the dipole-dipole interaction, where two qubits coupled to a cavity, are driven by a coherent field. By suitably chosen placements of the qubits in the cavity and by adjusting the relative decay strengths of the qubits and cavity field, we kill many unwanted excitation pathways. This leads to dipole blockade. In addition, we show that these two qubits are strongly entangled over a broad regime of the system parameters. We show that a strong signature of this dipole blockade is the bunching property of the cavity photons which thus provides a possible measurement of the dipole blockade. We present dynamical features of the dipole blockade without dipole-dipole interaction. The proposal presented in this work can be realized not only in traditional cavity QED, but also in non-cavity topological photonics involving edge modes.

  • Multi-peak solitons in nonlocal nonlinear system with sine-oscillation response

    摘要: The multi-peak solitons and their stability are investigated for the nonlocal nonlinear system with the sine-oscillation response, including both the cases of positive and negative Kerr coefficients. The Hermite-Gaussian-type multi-peak solitons and the ranges of the degree of nonlocality within which the solitons exist are analytically obtained by the variational approach. This is the first time, to our knowledge at least, to discuss the solution existence range of the multi-peak solitons analytically, although approximately. The variational analytical results are confirmed by the numerical ones. The stability of the multi-peak solitons are addressed by the linear stability analysis. It is found that the upper thresholds of the peak-number of the stable solitons are five and four for the system with negative and positive Kerr coefficients, respectively.

  • Quantum-enhanced data classification with a variational entangled sensor network

    摘要: Variational quantum circuits (VQCs) built upon noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) hardware, in conjunction with classical processing, constitute a promising architecture for quantum simulations, classical optimization, and machine learning. However, the required VQC depth to demonstrate a quantum advantage over classical schemes is beyond the reach of available NISQ devices. Supervised learning assisted by an entangled sensor network (SLAEN) is a distinct paradigm that harnesses VQCs trained by classical machine-learning algorithms to tailor multipartite entanglement shared by sensors for solving practically useful data-processing problems. Here, we report the first experimental demonstration of SLAEN and show an entanglement-enabled reduction in the error probability for classification of multidimensional radio-frequency signals. Our work paves a new route for quantum-enhanced data processing and its applications in the NISQ era.

  • Insight-HXMT observations of the first binary neutron star merger GW170817

    摘要: Finding the electromagnetic (EM) counterpart of binary compact star merger, especially the binary neutron star (BNS) merger, is critically important for gravitational wave (GW) astronomy, osmology and fundamental physics. On Aug. 17, 2017, Advanced LIGO and Fermi/GBM independently triggered the first BNS merger, GW170817, and its high energy EM counterpart, GRB 170817A, respectively, resulting in a global observation campaign covering gamma-ray, X-ray, UV, optical, IR, radio as well as neutrinos. The High Energy X-ray telescope (HE) onboard Insight-HXMT (Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope) is the unique high-energy gamma-ray telescope that monitored the entire GW localization area and especially the optical counterpart (SSS17a/AT2017gfo) with very large collection area (~1000 cm2) and microsecond time resolution in 0.2-5 MeV. In addition, Insight-HXMT quickly implemented a Target of Opportunity (ToO) observation to scan the GW localization area for potential X-ray emission from the GW source. Although Insight-HXMT did not detect any significant high energy (0.2-5 MeV) radiation from GW170817, its observation helped to confirm the nexpected weak and soft nature of GRB 170817A. Meanwhile, Insight-HXMT/HE provides one of the most stringent constraints (~10-7 to 10-6 erg/cm2/s) for both GRB170817A and any other possible precursor or extended emissions in 0.2-5 MeV, which help us to better understand the properties of EM radiation from this BNS merger. Therefore the observation of Insight-HXMT constitutes an important chapter in the full context of multi-wavelength and multi-messenger observation of this historical GW event.

  • Non-Supersymmetric Attractors in Symmetric Coset Spaces

    摘要: We present a method of constructing generic single-centered and multi-centered extremal black hole solutions in a large class of 4D N=2 supergravities coupled to vector-multiplets with cubic prepotentials. The method is applicable to models for which the 3D moduli spaces obtained via c*-map are symmetric coset spaces. The attractor solutions are generated by certain nilpotent elements in the coset algebra. We present explicit computations in 4D N=2 supergravity coupled to one vector-multiplet, whose 3D moduli space is the symmetric coset space G_{2(2)}/SL(2,R)^2. The non-supersymmetric multi-centered black holes in this model are found to lack the intricate moduli space of bound configurations that are typical of the supersymmetric case.

  • Genome‐wide association analysis and differential expression analysis of resistance to Sclerotinia stem rot in Brassica napus

    摘要: Brassica napus is one of the most important oil crops in the world, and stem rot caused by the fungus Sclerotinia sclerotiorum results in major losses in yield and quality. To elucidate resistance genes andpathogenesis-relatedgenes, genome-wide association analysis of 347 accessions was performed using the Illumina 60K Brassica SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) array. In addition, the detached stem inoculation assay was used to select five highly resistant (R) and susceptible (S) B.napus lines, 48h postinoculation with S.sclerotiorum for transcriptome sequencing. We identified 17 significant associations for stem resistance on chromosomes A8 and C6, five of which were on A8 and 12 on C6. The SNPs identified on A8 were located in a 409-kb haplotype block, and those on C6 were consistent with previous QTL mapping efforts. Transcriptome analysis suggested that S.sclerotiorum infection activates the immune system, sulphur metabolism, especially glutathione (GSH) and glucosinolates in both R and S genotypes. Genes found to be specific to the R genotype related to the jasmonic acid pathway, lignin biosynthesis, defence response, signal transduction and encoding transcription factors. Twenty-four genes were identified in both the SNP-trait association and transcriptome sequencing analyses, including a tau class glutathione S-transferase (GSTU) gene cluster. This study provides useful insight into the molecular mechanisms underlying the plant's response to S.sclerotiorum.
