  • The Effectiveness of Sinking Supervision: Evidence from the Central Environmental Protection Inspection

Subjects: Management Science >> Other Disciplines of Management Science submitted time 2024-04-03

Abstract: This paper leverages data from listed firms and their affiliates from 2012 to 2020 to explore the role and status of the central environmental protection inspection in improving environmental governance. The results show that after the inspection team settled in a province, the investment stock of polluting firms in their local subordinate enterprises decreased by about 8%. Further mechanism analysis reveals a substitution relationship between the environmental regulatory systems established by local governments and enterprises autonomously and the direct supervision by the central authority. At the macro level, the impact of inspection actions is less significant in regions with a high emphasis on environmental protection, substantial financial investments in pollution control, sound legal systems, and high pollutant discharge efficiency. In other words, if listed firms have transferred production to areas with lax regulation, the impact of central environmental protection inspections will be greater. At the micro level, the impact of inspection actions on state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and politically unrelated enterprises is minor, as these enterprises tend to have higher investment intensity in environmental protection projects and good environmental performance. The substitution relationship between self-regulation and central supervision suggests that sinking regulatory actions organized by the central government can precisely target the weak links of local governments and enterprises in environmental governance, reflecting the significant role of central environmental protection inspections in improving relevant institutional constructions. Furthermore, the inspection actions also promote pollution enterprises to enhance resource utilization efficiency, as the total factor productivity of polluting enterprises increases after inspection actions. Similar inspection models also exist in various fields such as land resources and judiciary, the results of this paper provide evidence for the necessity and effectiveness of such systems.

  • The Role of Bond Issuance in the Relationship Between Underwriters and Issuers

Subjects: Management Science >> Other Disciplines of Management Science submitted time 2024-03-16

Abstract: This article studies the role of bond issuance in building a cooperative relationship between underwriters and issuers. The results show that, firstly, bond issuance is an effective means for underwriters to establish cooperative relationships with listed companies. Both bond issuance experience and stock IPO issuance experience can significantly increase the probability of underwriters participating in the next private equity placement by the same issuer. Secondly, underwriters in IPOs of listed companies will reduce the risk premium of bonds to stabilize customer relationships by improving the quality of bond issuance; Listed companies are indeed more inclined to choose underwriters who have participated in their stock IPOs to issue bonds to enjoy lower financing costs. Thirdly, utilizing existing partnerships for bond issuance means that listed companies have higher risks. During the bond’s maturity, these issuers’ stocks are more likely to be subject to special treatment (ST) due to deteriorating fundamentals. In summary, these results provide evidence for the role of securities underwriting relationships in the Chinese capital market and also provide a reference for subsequent regulatory policy reforms.

  • Research on consumer medication adherence: A two-stage theoretical model

Subjects: Psychology >> Applied Psychology Subjects: Management Science >> Other Disciplines of Management Science submitted time 2024-01-18

Abstract: The debate over whether individual health behavior changes occur in stages is currently a controversial focal point. Medication adherence, as a crucial indicator influencing health care outcomes, significantly impacts an individual's physical and mental well-being. Previous reviews of medication adherence levels have predominantly adopted a medical perspective, focusing on adherence behavior related to specific diseases. However, within the context of the increasingly market-driven health care industry, there is a dearth of research exploring the influence of information processing methods and psychological processes on consumer medication adherence behavior from the consumer's perspective. Additionally, existing research lacks theoretical categorization and discourse on adherence behavior. Drawing upon the two-stage theory model, this review examines factors within the marketing domain that influence consumer medication adherence behaviors, elucidating intervention strategies, and proposing future research trends and prospects. Theoretically, this contributes to understanding individual medication adherence behavior within the stages of health behavior change, enriching the stage theories within the health domain. Practically, it aids in better comprehending consumer mental health and behavioral patterns, offering marketing insights for chronic disease management.

  • Female social entrepreneurship: A research proposal on identity strategies, legitimacy acquisition, and performance impact

Subjects: Psychology >> Other Disciplines of Psychology Subjects: Management Science >> Other Disciplines of Management Science submitted time 2023-12-29

Abstract: Identity, as the starting point for the entrepreneurial behavior and outcomes of female social entrepreneurs, is crucial in addressing the key issues they face - gaining legitimacy and enhancing entrepreneurial performance. However, there is still a lack of research on the relationship between female social entrepreneurs’ identity strategies and legitimacy acquisition, as well as on the underlying mechanisms of how identity integration enhances social entrepreneurial performance. Therefore, this study follows the progressive logic of “identity strategy-legitimacy acquisition- performance impact” to carry out three sub-studies. First, based on the identity theory, we explored the impact of identity strategies on women’s social entrepreneurial decision-making through experimental conjoint analysis. Second, based on the institutional logic perspective, we used fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to explore the configurational impact of identity strategies on legitimacy acquisition. Finally, we constructed a theoretical model based on the identity theory to analyze the impact of female social entrepreneurs’ identity integration on social entrepreneurial performance. This model reveals the mediating role of legitimacy and the moderating role of social bricolage. Our research findings can help guide female social entrepreneurs to develop a clear self-cognition and make informed entrepreneurial decisions to successfully gain legitimacy, thus enhancing social entrepreneurial performance.

  • Corporate Digital Arming and Auditor Response Behavior ——The moderating effect of Labor Factors on the Supply and Demand Sides

Subjects: Management Science >> Other Disciplines of Management Science submitted time 2023-11-13

Abstract: While the development of the digital economy has brought about efficiency gains in economic activities, it has also created a "digital divide" and increased information asymmetry among market participants. Existing research on enterprise digitization focuses on the positive consequences from the perspective of the enterprise, but pays little attention to how people outside the enterprise perceive the enterprise's digital behavior. This paper is based on the supply side of auditing services, the study of the auditor's response to the digital behavior of enterprises, supply and demand side of the labor factors how to affect the response process, the study found that: (1) the digital transformation behavior of enterprises to form a kind of "armed", the auditor is facing a greater informational disadvantage, increasing the difficulty of the auditor's auditing and audit failure risk, the auditor thus requires a higher level of information asymmetry between market participants. The study finds that: (1) the digital transformation behavior of enterprises creates an "armament" and the auditor faces a greater information disadvantage, which increases the auditor's audit difficulty and the risk of audit failure, and thus the auditor demands a higher risk premium; (2) the auditor's industry expertise and the manager's technological background can help overcome the information disadvantage. This paper shows that: the auditor is more passive in the face of corporate digital behavior, the auditor has the industry expertise to overcome the passive situation, the technical background of the managers in the audit process to play an active "communicator" rather than the "hidden" role of information. This paper provides an overview of the digital transformation of the enterprise. This paper provides a new perspective on the digital transformation behavior of enterprises on the one hand, and enriches the research on auditor behavior in the digital economy on the other.

Abstract: Data localization is a focal point of global data governance and its impact on global data governance is no longer confined to a single country. Over the years, India has followed a unique policy framework in terms of cross-border data flows and data localization, and its insistence on data sovereignty reflects its position in the international arena. This study uses the Indian data localization paradigm as a research base to discuss the common phenomenon of disconnect between policy motivations and practical effects of data localization, and as an entry point to introduce the latest Indian research findings in this area. As an effective way for developing countries to deal with data security, the paradigm study of data localization in India reveals that the disconnect between policy motivations and actual effects is not only a common problem, but also an unreasonable framework construction and methodological limitations of the study. At the same time, reasonable rules for cross-border data flow should seek a value balance between security and development. As both an advocate and an important promoter of economic globalization, it will be a natural choice for China to actively participate in the international rule-making of cross-border data flow and enhance its discourse on crossborder data governance.

Abstract: Strengthening the competitive advantage of manufacturing and promoting its high-quality development are the key points to build a modern industrial system. This study uses international market share (MS), revealed comparative advantage (RCA), trade competition index (TCI), and price index (PI) from 2005 to 2020 to analyze the evolution of manufacturing competitive advantage and its main sources in major countries. The main findings are as follows. China’s labor-intensive industries maintain a strong international competitive advantage, and the international competitive advantage of some capital and technology-intensive industries is increasing. The capital and technology intensive industries in Germany, Japan, and United States have maintained a strong international competitive advantage, but some of them have shown a downward trend. The international competitive advantages of capital and technology-intensive industries such as electrical machinery and equipment manufacturing, special equipment manufacturing in China mainly come from product prices, while those in Germany, Japan, and United States mainly come from technology. Four policy suggestions are presented in this study for strengthening the competitive advantage of manufacturing: promoting technological innovation focusing on industrial basic capabilities; modernizing the manufacturing industry chain, supply chain, and innovation chain; accelerating digital, green, and service transformation; and increasing level of international cooperation and cross-border operations.

Abstract: Changes in international development environment such as geopolitics, geo-economics and science and technology innovation are reshaping the world’s competitive landscape and altering the balance of power among nations. China needs to adapt to the changes in international development environment, accurately grasp the new trends, optimize and adjust the science and technology strategy, effectively respond to new challenges, and seek new advantages in international competition. This study reviews China’s choices of science and technology strategy under the changes in international development environment. By summing up the successful experiences and remaining issues of the past science and technology strategies, the study proposes new choices for China’s science and technology strategy in response to new international development environment. It is found that, China’s science and technology strategy has been continuously adjusted and optimized in response to the ever-changing international development environment. Successful experience such as engaging in international scientific and technological cooperation, formulating forward-looking and systematic policies, improving the construction of national innovation system, fully leveraging the advantages of the nationwide system, or advancing reform of systems and mechanisms for science and technology, have effectively addressed the complex and changing international development environment and propelled the rapid development of China’s scientific and technological endeavors. However, China still needs to deal with and resolve the remaining issues in science and technology strategy choices, such as the path dependency of critical core technologies, the lack of deep integration between innovation and industrial, the lack of synergy among “education, science, technology and talent”, and the non-principal role of enterprises in innovation. Facing the new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation, the acceleration of deglobalization and regionalism, the rise of developing countries as a collective force, and the increasingly intense international conflicts and confrontations, China’s science and technology strategy should learn from historical retrospection and strengthen strategic foresight and form asymmetric advantages, enhance the development of a national self-reliant innovation ecosystem, and promote science, improve the new nationwide system to strengthen the basic capabilities of science and technology, and technology cooperation in the light of diverse international interests.

  • Analysis of the financial performance of listed companies in the real estate sector based on factor analysis

Subjects: Management Science >> Other Disciplines of Management Science submitted time 2022-11-25 Cooperative journals: 《Economics & Management Review》

Abstract: In August 2020, The People's Bank of China(PBOC) and Minstry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of the People's of China(MOHURD) introduced the "three red lines" policy for the supervision and financing management of the real estate industry, which is a landmark event for the real estate industry. For many years, the main source of funding for real estate companies has been bank loans and real estate pre-receipts, which has led to a very high debt ratio for real estate companies, and while this high leverage has brought great opportunities for real estate companies to develop, it also harbours great risks. The introduction of the "three red lines" policy has prompted a number of companies to reduce their debt and mitigate their financial risks. This paper collects data on the financial indicators of listed real estate enterprises as at 31 December 2020 and uses factor analysis to evaluate their financial performance. The current operating status of real estate listed companies and possible risks are evaluated from a financial perspective, and corresponding suggestions are made from the perspective of improving the financial situation.

  • Underlying the International Business Direction, Assessing the Role of Government Intervention and Management in Africa facilitating SMEs’ Development

Subjects: Management Science >> Other Disciplines of Management Science submitted time 2022-11-25 Cooperative journals: 《Economics & Management Review》

Abstract: This paper aims to provide some insights for SMEs in the West African subregion to obtain human capitals and financing in terms of how government intervention and management facilitate SEMs’ development, especially to determine whether the determinants of SMEs obtaining financing and human capitals are the same and/or different comparing with other countries. By fully understanding these arguments better, we applied the Uppsala Model to demonstrate how a company needs and wants when they did internationalization as well as became bigger and bigger. Also, some potential theories will be discussed underlying the Uppsala model. According to our literature and framework reviews, we found that a good and positive government management and intervention can, directly and indirectly, influence SMEs development and financing in West African countries; we found significant differences in the relevance of companies that received financing at the national level. Alternatively, due to SMEs in Africa countries face numerous potential international issues such as human resources management, leadership approaches, financing management, and so on, we collected these potential issues and come up with some alternatives and implementations that SMEs may use now and in the future. Taken together, we found that government intervention and management definitely influence SMEs development in Africa. Alternatively, we make another argument regarding government intervention and managements influence SMEs’ financing as well as development within this paper; we later found evidence from our literature and framework reviews as well as case studies to support our argument. Therefore, the findings of this study have important implications for politics by government intervention and managements; managemental implications, possible suggestions, and potential limitations will also be discussed in this paper at the end.
