  • The independent effect of transitional probability on verbal statistical learning

Subjects: Linguistics and Applied Linguistics >> Linguistics and Applied Linguistics submitted time 2023-11-01

Abstract: In a typical SL task, participants are first exposed to a nonsensical artificial language for 5~10 mins and then asked to finish a 2 alternative forced choice task (2AFC). Transitional probabilities (TPs), the core concept in SL, represent the predictably between syllables. In a given artificial language, syllables within a target word occur together more frequently, resulting in higher TPs than those of the syllables that span across word boundaries. The latter is referred to as partwords and consist of lower TPs. After the exposure phase, participants enter the test phase and are presented with a partword and target word in each trial of the 2AFC task. If the accuracy across participants is higher than chance level, it is assumed that learning has occurred. However, studies have also shown that factors other than TPs, such as word token frequency, word length variations (or the lack thereof) also impact SL performance in such tasks. To date, these factors as well as their interactive effects remain under studied.
In the experiment one, we aimed to investigate whether TPs affect SL learning performance when controlling for target words’ and partwords’ token frequencies. In doing so, we created the artificial language by randomizing the order of two trisyllabic words and two disyllabic words. During the 2AFC task, three types of items (target word, partword, and nonword) were paired together, with two items in equal length in each trial. There were 24 trials in the test. 40 native Mandarin monolinguals participated in the experiment; they first listened to the artificial language for 5mins and then finished the 2AFC task. In the experiment two, an artificial language was generated with 10 syllables and presented in exposure phase, to examine whether experiment one’s learning effect came from the TP or participants’ prior language bias.
Results in experiment one showed that the accuracy of all trials was significantly higher than chance (0.5) at the group level, suggesting that participants were able to segment the artificial language of mixed word lengths. Participants were also marginally better at choosing target words over partwords, and partwords over nonwords. To investigate the independent effect of TP in SL, we subset the data by word length and found that participants’ accuracy choosing trisyllabic target words over partwords was marginally lower than their choosing disyllabic target words over partword, which suggests that disyllabic words confer advantage in SL for this group of participants. In addition, participants’ accuracy in choosing trisyllabic partwords over nonwords was significantly higher than that of disyllabic target partwords over nonwords. In the experiment two, there were no significant learning effect in any levels when the statistical information was absent.
A series of results across two behavior experiments highlight the unique contribution from TPs alone, since accuracy was assessed by controlling for word token frequency and word length. Thus, the present study suggests that TP exerts effect on verbal SL performance independent of word token frequency. Further studies should take into account more types of statistical rule such as mutual information and backward TP.

  • Beam Test of the PIN-diode Readout Units with Electron Energies from 5 to 40 GeV at CERN SPS

Subjects: Physics >> Nuclear Physics submitted time 2023-10-31

Abstract: The Chinese large-area violet-light-sensitive silicon photodiode PIN is one of the candidates of the lead tungstate crystal detector readout component of the photon spectrometer in the large heavy ion collision experiment. The PIN diode was assembled with the lead tungstate crystal and the low-noise preamplifier into a complete detector unit. The beam test was carried out on the SPS accelerator at CERN. The energy resolution was measured with the electron beam energy ranging from 5 to 40 GeV. The summation correction method was discussed, and an excellent linearity of the nominal beam energy versus the peak position of the detector was obtained, which showed the punch-through effect can be ignored.

  • Beam energy dependence and updated test of the Trojan horse nucleus invariance via the d(d,p)t measurement at ultra-low energies

Subjects: Physics >> Nuclear Physics submitted time 2023-10-31

Abstract: The 2H(d, p ) 3H bare nucleus astrophysical S(E) factor has been measured indirectly at energies from about 500 keV down to several keV by means of the Trojan-horse method applied to the quasi#2;free process 2H(6Li, pt)4He induced at the lithium beam energy of 11 and 9.5 MeV, which makes the virtual binary process incident energy Eqf dd go much closer to the zero-quasi-free-energy point than that in the previous similar experiment. The obtained results are compared with direct data as well as with previous indirect investigation of the same binary reactions. It shows that the precision of S(E) data in low energy range extracted via the same Trojan horse nucleus ( 6Li = ( d ⊕ α) ) becomes better when the incident energy decreases from high value down to the zero-quasi-free-energy point. The very good agreement between data extracted from different Trojan horse nucleus ( 6Li = ( d ⊕ α ) vs. 3He = ( d ⊕ p)) gives a strong updated test for the independence of the binary indirect cross section on the chosen Trojan horse nucleus at low energies.

  • New measurement of the d(d,p)t reaction at astrophysical energies via the Trojan-horse method

Subjects: Other Disciplines submitted time 2023-10-31

Abstract: The study of d(d,p)t reaction is very important for the nucleosynthesis in both standard Big Bang and stellar evolution, as well as for the future fusion reactors planning of energy production. The d(d,p)t bare nucleus astrophysical S(E) factor has been measured indirectly at energies from about 400 keV down to several keV by means of the Trojan horse method applied to the quasi-free process 2H(6Li, pt)4He induced at a lithium beam energy of 9.5 MeV, which is closer to the zero quasi-free energy point. An accurate analysis leads to the determination of the Sbare(0) = 56.7±2.0keV·b and of the corresponding electron screening potential Ue = 13.2± 4.3eV. In addition, this work gives an updated test for the Trojan horse nucleus invariance comparing with previous indirect investigations using 3He = (d + p) breakup.

  • Experimental spectra analysis in THM with the help of simulation based on Geant4 framework

Subjects: Physics >> Nuclear Physics submitted time 2023-10-31

Abstract: The Coulomb barrier and electron screening cause difficulties in directly measuring nuclear reaction cross sections of charged particles in astrophysical energies. The Trojan-horse method has been introduced to solve the difficulties as a powerful indirect tool. In order to understand experimental spectra better, Geant4 is employed to simulate the method for the first time. Validity and reliability of the simulation are examined by comparing the experimental data with simulated results. The Geant4 simulation can give useful information to understand the experimental spectra better in data analysis and is beneficial to the design for future related experiments.

  • IRREVERSIBILITY EVALUATION FRAMEWORK FOR SEASONAL THERMAL ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS AND MIXING PHENOMENA IN HOT WATER STORAGE RESERVOIRS

Subjects: Energy Science >> Engineering of Energy Sources System submitted time 2023-10-31

Abstract: Heat storage technology can address the issue of mismatch between the supply and demand of carbon-free thermal energy in energy systems in terms of time, space, or intensity. It is one of the key technologies for achieving carbon neutrality in building and urban energy systems. For district heating systems in urban regions of northern Chinese, the storage of various low-grade waste heat collected throughout the year using seasonal heat storage technology can fully meet the winter heating needs of northern cities and take advantage of the existing infrastructure of district heating networks. However, seasonal water heat storage (also known as hot water reservoir storage) has not yet achieved a technological breakthrough and large-scale application. One of the main reasons is that the fundamental principles of flow and heat transfer within ultra-large-scale heat storage water bodies are not clear, and a temperature-grade loss model resulting from the mixing of hot and cold fluids has not been established. This has led to a lack of sufficient theoretical tools for Chinese engineering researchers to carry out the design of ultra-large-scale water heat storage devices and accurately predict and evaluate the performance of water heat storage devices.
We are in urgent needs of conducting fundamental research in fluid dynamics and heat transport for large-scale seasonal heat storage technology and establish a thermal performance evaluation framework for seasonal heat storage technology, including water heat storage. To address the research needs mentioned above, this research report intends to discuss the key theoretical aspects of seasonal heat storage technology in the following five chapters:
Chapter One introduces the overview of seasonal heat storage technology, lists the main technological options and their key characteristics, and emphasizes the common problem of excessive temperature-grade loss in existing seasonal heat storage projects. This chapter points out that irreversibility of heat transport is a key reason for temperature-grade loss during heat storage. It also shows the limitations of existing indicators, such as the exergy efficiency, in evaluating temperature-grade loss characteristics. Furthermore, the chapter specifies the research needs for constructing an irreversibility evaluation framework for heat storage devices.
Chapter Two introduces the irreversibility evaluation framework in this report. First, it proposes a reclassification method for heat storage technology based on heat storage principles: fluid displacement-based and heat conduction-based heat storage. Also, the chapter compares and analyzes the interconversion and differences of entropy, entransy, and maximum work potential as evaluation parameters in describing irreversible internal heat transfer issues, with a focus on the advantages of using entransy and its dissipation in analyzing the irreversibility characteristics of heat storage. Furthermore, considering that heat storage processes are non-equilibrium and heat storage media are continuum, and heat and momentum transport phenomena are coupled, an irreversibility evaluation framework is proposed for describing the heat quantity parameter transfer and dissipation phenomena using partial differential equations.
Chapter Three presents the entransy dissipation analysis framework for seasonal heat storage media in details. First, based on the entransy balance principle in the heat storage media, entransy quantity efficiency is defined, and an evaluation method is designed to differentiate ideal and actual processes' heat quantity dissipation based on the heat transfer principles of water heat storage and ground source heat storage. In the chapter, the analytical solutions are derived for entransy dissipation in two categories of heat storage processes under ideal and actual conditions. In particular, the chapter presents a general expression for entransy dissipation in turbulent stratified flow based on turbulence modelling theory including the eddy viscosity models. The entransy dissipation levels of the two categories of heat storage technologies are compared. And the inherent reasons why fluid displacement heat storage is more suitable for long-term heat storage are provided. The chapter also specifies the engineering design direction of minimizing the intensity of cold and hot fluid mixing and the corresponding entransy dissipation levels.
Chapter Four introduces the flow and heat transfer phenomena of heat storage reservoirs, outlining the basic phenomena and governing equations from the two aspects of basic flow processes and heat transfer processes in heat storage reservoirs characterized by thermal stratification.
Chapter Five analyzes the mechanism of hot and cold fluid mixing in hot water reservoirs. Here, the chapter first analyzes the basic principles of heat and cold fluid mixing corresponding to transport phenomena and, through the discussion of physical phenomena and model de

  • Examining the dynamic links among perceived teacher support, mathematics learning engagement, and dimensions of mathematics anxiety in elementary school students: A Four-wave longitudinal study

Subjects: Psychology >> Educational Psychology submitted time 2023-10-30

Abstract: There has been growing interest in the relation among students’ perceived teacher support, mathematics learning engagement, and mathematics anxiety in the last decade. Longitudinal models are needed to provide new insights into the role of engagement in mathematics learning. Based on the control-value theory and developmental dynamic bio-psycho-social model of mathematics anxiety, the present study followed 1796 students from Grades 3 to 6 to investigate the longitudinal associations among perceived teacher support and two conceptually distinct dimensions of mathematics anxiety (i.e., mathematics evaluation anxiety and learning mathematics anxiety). We further explored the potential mediator effects of mathematics learning engagement between perceived teacher support and mathematics anxiety. We found bidirectional longitudinal associations between teacher support and learning mathematics anxiety from Grade 3 to grade 6, as well as unidirectional longitudinal associations between teacher support and mathematics evaluation anxiety (from mathematics evaluation anxiety to teacher support). Furthermore, mathematics learning engagement mediated the relation between perceived teacher support and mathematics anxiety (including learning mathematics anxiety and mathematics evaluation anxiety). These findings highlight the importance of understanding the dynamic interplay among perceived teacher support, mathematics learning engagement, and mathematics anxiety from a developmental perspective.

  • How can entrepreneurial failure experience serve as an open sesame for subsequent job-seeking? An impression management perspective

Subjects: Psychology >> Social Psychology submitted time 2023-10-28

Abstract: Numerous entrepreneurial firms fail. Most entrepreneurs who experience entrepreneurial failure quit entrepreneurship and return to the labor market in search of a paid job. Job-seeking not only is a turning point in an entrepreneur’s own recovery from entrepreneurial failure but also potentially avoids wastage of society’s entrepreneurial resources. However, although it is a common phenomenon, theoretical research on job-seeking among entrepreneurs who have failed has been limited. Grounded in impression management theory, this study explored entrepreneurs’ social motivations to manage failure and constructed an integrated framework to examine how they use impression management strategies in their subsequent job-seeking. The study focused on three issues: (1) tracing the unique definition and structure of entrepreneurs’ impression management strategies after entrepreneurial failure, in which two core dimensions of impression management strategies—assertive and defensive strategies—were proposed; (2) revealing how the nature of an entrepreneurial failure event affects subsequent impression management strategies; and (3) unraveling the mechanism by which impression management strategies influence job-seeking outcomes using signaling theory. This study clarifies the hitherto opaque process leading from entrepreneurial failure to success in job-seeking among entrepreneurs.

  • Correction to the quantum relation of photons involved in the Doppler effect in the framework of a special Lorentz violation model

Subjects: Physics >> General Physics: Statistical and Quantum Mechanics, Quantum Information, etc. submitted time 2023-10-28

Abstract: The possibility of Lorentz symmetry breaking has been discussed in many models of quantum gravity. In this paper we followed the Lorentz violation model in Ref. 14 to discuss the Doppler frequency shift of photons and the Compton scattering process between photons and electrons, pointing out that following the idea in Ref. 14 we have to modify the usual quantum relation of photons involved in Doppler effect. But due to the current limited information and knowledge, we couldn’t yet determine the specific expression for the correction coefficient of the quantum relation of photons. However, the phenomenon of spontaneous radiation in a cyclotron maser give us an opportunity to see what the expression for this correction coefficient might look like, as the phenomenon of spontaneous radiation in a cyclotron maser can be explained by the Doppler effect of virtual photons and the Compton scattering process between virtual photons and electrons (or other particles). Therefore, under some restrictive conditions, we construct a very concise expression for this correction coefficient by discussing different cases. And then we used this expression to analyze the wavelength of radiation in the cyclotron maser, which tends to be a limited value at v→c, rather than to be 0 as in the Lorentz model. And we also discussed the inverse Compton scattering phenomenon and found that there is a limit to the maximum energy that can be obtained by photons in the collision between ultra-high energy particles and low-energy photons, which conclusion is also very different from that obtained from the Lorentz model, in which the energy that can be obtained by the photon tends to be infinite as the velocity of particle is close to c. This paper still inherits the idea in Ref. 14 that the energy and momentum of particles (i.e., any particles, including photons) cannot be infinite, otherwise it will make some physical scenarios meaningless, and this view is also from the idea in some quantum gravity models. When the parameter Q characterizing the degree of deviation from the Lorentz model is equal to 0, all the results and conclusions in this paper will return to the case as in the Lorentz model, so this paper also provides us with a possible experimental scheme to determine the value of Q in Ref. 14 , although it still requires extremely high experimental energy.
